Today marks 38 years since one of the greatest tragedies in human history occurred.

A lot has been said, written, invented, drawn and sung.

The main thing that will remain forever is the desire of people to help their neighbor, to know the truth and to seek justice in all ways.

Even if sometimes this justice can only be found at the bottom of one's own heart.

The roof was the same from which they had watched the helicopters barely two weeks ago. The wind blew coldly up there in the dark, but this was the price they had to pay to have a place where they could talk relatively freely. It had rained in the evening, but the clouds had dissipated by now. Yet the late spring night was cool and damp.

Valery shivered and buried his hands a little deeper in the pockets of his coat – Boris’s coat, really. When he had come up here he had not expected to stay for so long, had only wanted to get a breath of air and a few minutes of solitude. But Boris had joined him soon after, and now they were still up here, almost half an hour later, looking at the star-sprinkled night and the dead city all around them.

“I wish this was over,” Valery mumbled, his words slurred at the edges with the exhaustion of many all-but-sleepless nights. “I wish we could simply go home, and forget about all this.”

They both knew that it was an empty wish, that it would never truly be over, and that they would never be able to forget. But there was no harm done in dreaming of a future they could not have, was there?

Boris put an arm around Valery’s shoulder and pulled him closer. “When this is over, I will take you on a holiday to the Black Sea, and I will make my grandmother’s apple cake for you.”

Valery leaned into his touch with a sigh. There would be no holiday by the Black Sea and no apple cake, but it was still nice to imagine it. “That will be wonderful.” He turned his head to look at Boris. “Promise?”

Boris leaned in to press a quick kiss to Valery’s lips. “Promise.”
