Things my extremely Italian physics professor has said:
“If you are walking in the woods nearby Chernobyl, you will probably be fine. But if you pick something up off the ground and eat it, you will die of radiation poisoning. Of course you may die if you eat things from the ground in other places, also, but likely not of radiation.”
“Unfortunately there is nothing I can teach you that will prevent you dying if there is on your house a hydrogen bomb. That is a politician problem. If any of you are president later, please do not hydrogen bomb my house.”
“Radioactivity could perhaps be used by terrorists, but it has not yet. Likely this is because terrorists do not study much physics.”
“Why is it that physics graduate students cannot make a nuclear bomb? It is not that they do not want to. They simply have not the money to buy the materials. Or anything else.”

I was rewatching ep 23 of Well Theres Your Problem podcast, they were talking about the Chernobyl exclusion zone and Alice said "The wildlife were returning they were sitting on barrels playing balalaikas" I was so enamored by that image I had to draw it

kabru dunmeshi is basically a chernobyl survivor who was adopted by an eternally young hot white woman who was going to pamper him for his entire life but instead of wanting to be pampered he was like "mom, i need to become a stalker. i need to return to the Zone" and his elf mom was like "nooo the Zone sucks you'll be shot by a bandit" and he was like "no mom i need to go to the Zone and find out what happened" and she was like "fine" and pulled out a machinegun from her days in the Suicide Squad and trained him to kill while firing on him with live ammunition. Then he went to the Zone and immediately got killed by a pack of wild dogs because elf mom only taught him how to shoot other humans

Stained glass windows in the administrative building of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant was one of the largest in the Soviet Union and the poster child of the Soviet nuclear power industry. As such, little expense was spared on details like these windows.
The Soviet Union often used motifs in abstract art to promote Communism and laude their successes.

I keep forgetting I unfollowed the r/polyamory subreddit, and then I'll randomly see Some Bullshit someone screen-capped in a group chat, and I'll be like, ah. Good call on that one.

If I made a video about Eragon would you watch it?
I don't really do media analysis on Philosophy Tube because other people can do it better and also it's just not where I'm strongest - however I do kindof want to do an unnecessarily deep dive into the Eragon books?
I just finished the new one and I have a lot of thoughts, but mainly a lot of joy and excitement that I want to share???
idk would you watch that? If I was like, "Hey - normally we do serious philosophy, but just this once for a treat let's do something easy and different and talk about a fantasy book series I love?"
Last time I did media analysis was with the Chernobyl series back in Philosophy Tube Season 2 and it didn't do super well, but I feel the planets aligning to try it again...
I think there's potentially some interesting questions to be asked... Honestly, part of my reluctance (I'm recognising now) is my own snobbery. There are so many YouTubers who do media analysis and I like the idea that Philosophy Tube is somehow more highfalutin than that, but that's pride talking and maybe I shouldn't listen to that...

Go_A - Shum 2021
"Shum" ("Noise") is a song by Ukrainian electro-folk band Go_A, and represented Ukraine in the Eurovision Song Contest 2021, where they ended up number 5. Watch the performance here!
The Eurovision version of the song took the lead in the global Spotify Viral 50 daily list on 24 May 2021, where it stayed until 1 June, and led the weekly list on the week of 27 May. It entered the Billboard Global 200 on the week of 5 June, at position 158, becoming the first ever Ukrainian-language song to chart there. On the same week, it peaked at number 80 on the Billboard Global Excl. US.
The lyrics of this song is a variation of Ukrainian folk songs which were sung in the "Shum" folk ritual. The ritual involved a game and was performed in spring. According to some ethnographers, Shum refers to the god or personification of the forest. Etymologically, the name of the ritual probably comes from Proto-Slavic words šumъ ("noise") or šuma ("forest").
The music video was shot in a forest near the Chernobyl nuclear power plant.
"Shum" recieved a total of 74,4% yes votes!

I really wanna see a thing where the reclusive prince of Gotham has to fend for himself while the Wayne's elusive butler recovers in the hospital. Bruce who phones Alfred like,
"Should I peel the eggshell before or after I boil the water?"
"Bloody hell,--"
" Alfred, how much is a tablespoon? What do I get? Where do I buy that? I need PRECISE measurements. "
"You're handling salt and pepper, not Chernobyl radioactives."
"I might be."
Alfred's not bothered, -- this is the same walk as always, just a few more bruises, burns, and a leg cast.
But can you imagine his surprise when Bruce, piano smooth voice a little worried, whispering, " Alfred? How do you make animal shaped pancakes?"
"Master Bruce, how utterly unbecoming. A bloke your age shouldn't be eating pancakes...Unless he plans to share?"
"They're not for me. They're for Jay."
Alfred hears the lough shatter of what's sure to be his favorite porcelain dove, a tiny, babyish giggle, and Bruce sighing in bemusement.
His heart monitor goes up.

Imagine if you were on a clean up crew of people tasked with decontaminating Chernobyl (or an area similar) but as soon as you tried to go in you started getting tricks pulled on you by stoats loony tunes style because the stoats have somehow claimed the old nuclear plant and won’t let you have it back. The stoats are cutting your brake lines. The stoats are fucking up your equipment. The stoats are felling a tree and pushing it over onto your truck. The stoats are all wearing ribbons and doing karate and biting you. That is what the humans of this world are in for

Today is a 37st anniversary of the Chornobyl Nuclear Plant disaster. It's hard to talk about one unprocessed national tragedy while living through another.
The Chornobyl disaster was totally preventable and it took away countless lives of people living in the region, especially in Ukraine and Belarus - both the liquidators and the civillians. Despite the very air and dust being literal poison, the soviets had not only hid this information from the people, but forced everybody to partake in the May the 1st parade - because god forbid we lose our face before the international community as a working class paradise! If not for the nuclear scientists in Sweden who raised the alarm about the dangerous levels of nuclear particles coming from northern Ukraine, who knows what would have happened. It definitely would have been swepped under the rug and forgotten by the international community, together with its victims - just like Semipalatinsk in Kazakhstan is barely known abroad.
With russia constantly threatening to turn Zaporhizhzha nuclear plant into second Chornobyl, the wound caused by this tragedy is cut open again.
We all love the HBO Chornobyl series, and I genuinely am grateful to Craig Mazin for the amount of empathy and respect he brought to the series; but for today I indulge you to watch something made by ukrainians, to try to understand what this tragedy means to us and how it influences our lives even today.
For the documentaries, my favourite series by this day remains the "Dragons live here" by Your Underground Humanitarian School Youtube channel, which, unfortunately, can only offer automated english subtitles - they should, however, be sufficient.

As for the feature films, I recommend "Gateway" (you can stream it online with english subtitles here). And here is the official english trailer:
