Effy’s Style for Soft Gamines

Hi guys!  This is the first post in my “Effy’s Style for Different Body Types” series.  I’m starting with Soft Gamines for the Soft Gamine anon who said she was excited for this series.  Soft Gamines are petite, soft, and curvy, with small but angular bones and a doll-like face.  Jenna Louise Coleman and Lucy Hale are two great examples of this type.  A quick shortcut for an Effyish Soft Gamine look is to ask yourself, “would Aria from Pretty Little Liars wear this?” If the answer is yes, you’re most of the way there.  Under the cut, I’m going to talk about different types of clothes that suit your body type, what pieces to look for that are Effy inspired, and how to make Effy-inspired outfits for the Soft Gamine type.  Let me know if this is helpful or if there’s anything you think needs to be added!

Storm Hawks OC Challenge - February 2023

Hey there folks! Welcome to February's bird OC challenge! I hope the first month of the year treated everyone well, and that you're all ready for a very colourful birb to work with.

I give you all the Oriental Dwarf Kingfisher (Ceyx erithaca)!

I want to thank @rainymeadows for suggesting this one a while back in the Storm Hawks server.

Found mostly in South-East Asia and the Indian subcontinent, these birds are most common in deciduous and evergreen forest habitats, along with alluvial forests and mangroves (other habitats can be found on the wikipedia page). Despite being called kingfishers, they aren't primarily piscivores, and are usually found eating insects such as mantises and beetles, likely due to their size, as they can weigh an average of nine grams.

The deadline for this month is Sunday the 26th of February, 8pm GMT. As always, rules and extra images, including an optional colour palette are below the cut.

Minimum requirements for drawn entries to be put in the winner's vote are a name, occupation, the character's home/birth Terra and at least one paragraph (or about 100 words) of written backstory.

Minimum requirements for written (i.e. written dossiers without art, or mini-fics for the character) are 500 words including backstory and appearance. Feel free to make a mini-fic out of this challenge, I'll make sure to link it with the final collage as well.

Entrants who are part of the Storm Hawks discord server will have the chance of getting a custom role for the next month! If you’re not part of the discord server, please ask for an invite if you’re interested.

You're not expected to create a character from scratch for this challenge. If you've got an older character concept that's been collecting dust or that you'd like to take the opportunity to revamp, feel free! The goal of this challenge is to inspire people.

Make sure to tag me in your entries and also DM me with a link to your entry. Tumblr is not always reliable about notifications for this sort of thing, and I don't want to risk missing anyone's entries, so better safe than sorry.

The group collage of entries, and the winner's vote are opt-in. Participation of those parts of this challenge are not mandatory.

The winner of the vote will receive a free sketch piece of their character from me.

Hi! Here is my entry for January’s Storm Hawks OC Challenge (Great-Eared Nightjar) from @far-side-skies

Name: Jarita Loxia

Nickname: Jari

Age: 18

Sex: Female

Occupation: Hunter

Position: Sharpshooter and markswoman

Weapon of choice: Rifle, bow and arrows

Family: Carolina (mother, ✝), Garuda (father, 40), Garuda (brother, 22)

Background: His mother was a cyclonian refugee who escaped to Terra Coriolis when her family became political enemies, but her family didn’t manage to escape. At Vellum, Carolina met Garuda and fell in love, marrying a few years later. When she was 7, their mother died in childbirth. His brother Gam was stillbirth. This turned Garuda Sr. into a taciturn man. She learned to hunt with her father and Hirundo, but when her brother moved from home, she started to hunt along with their father, so they would sell the meat.

Personality: She speaks always straightforward but with empathy and care of her words. Her friends and family are the most important to her and she’ll fight for them and be unconditional to her loved ones. She’s quite an introvert, enjoying the days she spends hunting in the forests all alone, so she can come back to Velum, with her batteries totally charged.

Abilities: She’s the best shooter of her team (still she has a competitive relation with her brother when they’re training), using rifle, bow and arrows, but she prefers rifle.

hi! i was wondering if you had any tips for knowing when to color a section of lineart vs keep it black vs blend? your art always blends so seamlessly between colored and black lineart and it makes it look so natural and have so much movement!

Hi, thank you for asking! Here’s a condensed tutorial on how I color my lineart :)

In general, I recommend trying things out and seeing how you like it. After drawing for years I’ve gone back and forth on fully colored and plain black lineart, and sometimes I change it depending on the look I’m going for in the final piece.
