Day 17/365 of me attempting to immerse myself in German in at least one way every day for a year straight.
I haven’t been logged into this account since day 5 but I swear I’ve still been doing something every day 😂. Most days it’s just been a Duolingo lesson. But I do have my phone language switched as well and occasionally listen to music in German.
Tonight it’ll probably be a couple Duolingo lessons and that’s it. I’m getting closer and closer to the end of high school so school work is picking up quite a bit and taking up more of my time.

Day 5/365 of me attempting to immerse myself in German in at least one way every day for a year straight.
Honestly, today hasn’t really been the best day. I did a Duolingo lesson to keep my streak which technically counts for this. But I didn’t do anything else. Didn’t have the time or energy for it.

Day 4/365 of me attempting to immerse myself in German in at least one way every day for a year straight.
Duolingo:
Today I successfully made it through the “jump here” test to begin unit 4 of section 2. I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to but the few things I hadn’t learnt yet were rather easy to pick up. It was just a few new vocabulary words.
Within the 4 days I have been doing this so far I’ve done 66 Duolingo lessons.

New motivation to stick to my goals: My favourite teacher confirmed he adds ex students back on FaceBook. I refuse to not achieve goals he knows I have and would see me fail.

Changing your phone language to pick up on words in a new language just for a bunch of language learning apps to refuse to let you change your app language so you can use them…

Me VS accidentally typing “est” instead of “ist” on Duolingo because they mean the same thing and only have a one letter difference and my mind doesn’t process that they’re 2 different languages fast enough

Yes, I 100% use learning new languages as an excuse to rewatch my childhood favourite TV shows and movies. Because this way nobody is allowed to judge. It’s educational.

Day 2/365 of me attempting to immerse myself in German in at least one way every day for a year straight.
I probably won’t be doing things to this extent every day. Obviously. Especially since I’m still in high school for another few months. But I had today off and didn’t have anything better to do.
Morning:
I changed my phone language yesterday but today went through and changed the apps that didn’t automatically get changed. Though most did so that didn’t take long. I’ve already picked up on a few words from changing my phone language, so it is already proving to be effective.
Afternoon:
I watched this comprehensible input video. I understood what most of the questions were asking I think there was 1/10 I didn’t understand) and overall it was good. I got through the video with very little difficulty compared to what I thought when I initially started watching it.
I also spent far too much time on Duolingo’s “Match Madness” thing. I got up to the 6th level on it and then got tired of it. Did a couple of regular lessons on Duolingo as well which has helped with vocabulary more than anything else I’ve tried so far.
Additionally I have been listening to this song on repeat basically all day. Yeah I dunno, I do that when I find a song I like. But hey, it’s German 🤷😂.
Evening/Night:
After literal years I finally got over 10k XP in German on Duolingo.
Tumblr media
I did an unknown number of lessons on Duolingo after that as well. Already almost at 11k XP. Which usually it takes me a very long time to go through a thousand so that says something about how much more I’ve done today than usual…
I wrote a (mind you, very short) paragraph which I posted earlier. That got me really happy because like… After years of trying to learn German and failing I finally wrote something without relying solely on a translator.

This is probably not 100% correct because I did try to write this with as little translating as possible. If you notice anything wrong with it please reblog this or comment and (nicely) let me know!!

Why couldn’t 15yo me have stuck to suffering through the basics of German so 18yo me wouldn’t be feeling dumber than a toddler. (I tried to watch a clip of Bluey and got confused within mere seconds).

Me: *Finally deciding to take learning German seriously*
A comprehensible input video: *Asks what city The Princess and the Frog takes place in*
My approximately 3 braincells: *Thinking New Orleans is a state, questioning what city it takes place in*
Well, at least I understood the question 🤦.

April 7 2024.
Day 1/365 of me attempting to immerse myself in German in one way or another every day for a year straight. One can hope this actually does something. And that I stick to it for a year.
I changed my phone language from French to German today.
I was a little scared to change it at first but then I remembered I was scared when I changed it to French too. I lasted over a year with my phone set to French. By around the one year mark it felt more natural than setting it back to English did.
Let’s hope by the one year mark of this I’ve gotten just as comfortable with German as I was with French. Or at least close.
Additionally, while I said I was only going to do one thing a day: That’s not really how I’m going to do this. I’m going to do it as at least one thing a day.
I watched an episode of Bubble Guppies in German earlier tonight. While I didn’t understand most of the verbal content I did understand a few words. Which is good because that means I’m able to recognize the words I do know in spoken words and not just writing.
One of the things that took me the longest in French was learning to recognize the sound of words and not just their written form. So I’m really glad I’m already picking up on that with what little German vocabulary I have.
