picking apart P3R's opening (full moon full life). an analysis

not really a perfect analysis but i just want to talk about some things I noticed with the new opening that got revealed yesterday because OHH BUDDY. there's a lot to unpack technically and narratively (through symbolism of what happens in the story).

a few notes abt this before i get started, though.

- THERE WILL BE MASSIVE P3 SPOILERS including for the very end of the game!!!

- im a film studies and english lit student. if that helps.

- this will not only be connecting the intro to the story but ALSO talking about some more technical aspects of the animation. and just things I like.

- if i say OTS that means over-the-shoulder (it's a shot type). and CU for close up. film language things. if you don't get any weird film terms feel free to ask. i will also refer to the camera or crane shots but i know there's no physical camera LOL - suicide mention and imagery tw. it's to be expected with p3 but still jic

anyways HERE WE GO! analysis under the cut -

okay. so.

i like this insert shot of minato's mp3 player. and how it starts with burn my dread and want to be close before transitioning into the new song (full moon full life, which is a title that makes me insane). the art style also does visibly change - from here it resembles persona animated cutscenes and/or the p3 movies but after the song transition it gets more into its own thing. a stylistic shift and god the new style is gorgeous. the mostly blue (with white/black/grey too obviously) color pallete works really well esp since the colors are so Vivid and the way its drawn looks more interesting visually this way too. idk how to describe it but god the art style is fun to look ay

i'm not sure who these two are but based on the blue splatter effect i'm assuming theyre representative of the apathy syndrome cases (and/or people killed by strega. etc etc) but i do love the color pallete used here.

oh this part is fun. love the color pallete transition for a second here. i'm guessing the darker pallete represents the dark hour (or also just night), but the interesting thing about this is the significance of the bird. with the altered pallete i assumed it was a crow with inverted colors, maybe (look at the shading in the first picture)? it looks like one and it'd made sense - see the white to establish it from the black and gray background + crows being percived as bad omens and/or signs of death. but it disappears when it goes back to normal. "day time"? again maybe symbolic of the dark hour or something. idk. not sure what this means but it's significant, i think. (i don't think the red light says anything but it Does stand out..) by the way around this part the song has a few notes from burn my dread. oh im SICK

and then it tracks over to this part, with a girl from gekkoukan falling off a building (again. probably not meant to be any character in particular). given the circumstances it does look a lot like a suicide attempt. there's no definite proof but i wouldn't be surprised given p3's themes. and then it goes back to the darker color pallete again - showing her being transmogrified in mid air. again i'm not sure if this really means anything other than telling us unnamed intro girl doesn't have a persona but i do like the allusion to the dark hour. maybe i'm wrong about some of these scenes and theres something im not picking up on (or added content that hasn't been shown yet, in some cases for these shots?). or maybe not. i dont know just Bear with me please

and then here is where it starts cutting to the characters. bear with me here because this is where the analysis gets CRAZIER. starting with yukari. i love the transition from white to the rest of her room btw. but yukari in particular stands out a lot from the background, especially before the shading for her room comes in. she feels almost isolated, a bit. maybe symbolic of her inner turmoil and loneliness. may also be influenced by her home life, with her dad being killed and her mother not really being there half the time just throwing herself at random men as a coping mechanism. and having to move a lot before coming to gekkoukan. she essentially ended up alone. but anyway i feel this is an intentional decision to frame her like this, isolated from the rest of the frame. it makes me insane a bit.

and then there's this.

all it seems like she's doing on the surface is just applying lipstick in the mirror, but it's her reflection in the water in the sink that stands out. a lot. notice how her reflection lacks eyes and is instead frowning. again, probably symbolic of her inner turmoil. she tries not to let people get too close (sees knows her better, eventually, but most at gekkoukan don't), but for the most part keeps up a cheerful exterior - hence why she's seen smiling in one part but right after, she's not. also, in the second image, where she's holding her lipstick up to doesn't actually match where she held it beforehand. it's next to her head, kind of resembling the pointing-gun-to-your-head motion mostly used by the evokers but like. yeah. (also even more interesting considering her initial issues w/ using the evoker and her fear of death. yeah. im sick)

yukari takeba you will always be famous i love you so much. okay its junpei time now

similar isolation theme thing to yukari's. actually as im writing this im realizing theres actually a lot of parallels between them. like theyre kinda foils in a way. and yukari and junpei also Deal With Their Trauma And Issues Differently which i feel is important (but they also both do put on cheerful fronts to mask their inner turmoil and insecurities - the issues and traumas theyre masking are different though and this manifests in different ways. like junpei's "class clown" persona, you feel me?) also look at the way he's standing too. bro looks Deep In Thought...........
