What is this about the tumblr staff wanting to sell art data to midjourney?

An ex-colleague of mine mentioned yesterday that there may be contacts between Automattic and midjourney in that direction, but nothing is public yet and I don't have any more info. They probably won't have anything specific to share either, since they left the company weeks ago too. That being said:

I have no reason to doubt my ex-coworker word, they are a trustworthy person.

Tumblr's CEO has been absurdly enthusiastic (comically, even) about AI, and is a big fan of LLMs and 'AI' companies.

A deal with midjourney could solve tumblr financial issues (not the same company, but openAi is paying up to 5 million/year to news companies to use their content as training data... tumblr generates several orders of magnitude more content than any newspaper or any media company and it only would need a 20 to 30 million per year deal to be profitable)

So I don't have any extra info yet, but I'm keeping my ears open.

Okay I have a follow up question from a poll I started today, which is tied into the concept of fic discoverability.

I would be fascinated to know how you normally find fics to read, and your reasoning about it, if any. Has your behaviour changed over time? What fandom are you in?

#i look on tumblr for “[blank] Fic Recs” initially and read those #or if i can't be bothered to do that i sort by bookmarks or kudos #and if i find someone's work i like i go onto their page and read everything by them and then their recommendations (in their bookmarks)

hi i'm a writer who has as of 19/09/22 completed chapter 7 of her beloved 200k plus word fic it was a stranger beneath my face which is a dsmp au sbi fic that deals with Very Emotional Themes of Family

i also have a fic about dealing with the loss of your best friend called slipping through my fingers all the time about c!quackity

and a bit of a deep dive into c!george's relationship with c!dreamxd in a little fic called fly me to the moon (by frank sinatra)

i also have i put a spell on you featuring c!fiances but in a fae and fantasy universe

edit 21/03/22: my actual newest fic: may your efforts be your own, featuring c!sapnap and c!george discussing what could be wrong with c!dream

edit may 2022: also wrote this lovely little thing: in little ways, when everything stays in case you're interested!

edit september 2022: also have a bunch of sbi fanfics here!

and a little writing snippet based on juniper vale's fractions about c!foolish and c!tommy and a non-canonical occurrence
