Slightly surprised with Sydney's sudden display of affection toward her, Evelynn took a second before she wrapped her arms around her best friend sitting next to her, hugging her back equally as tight as she herself was being hugged. "It's okay, Syd, nothing happened," Evelynn said after squeezing her eyes shut for a moment and chuckled. "We're alright. Nothing happened."
She didn't know why, but something inside her felt the need to calm her friend down, as if she wasn't just as shook up and scared over the situation as Sydney was. Because Eve really was scared - but not for herself. She was scared that her friends and family and anyone that cared about her were worried when there really was no reason for them to be. The power was out, there was no cell phone service and Evelynn couldn't get in contact with them, and she knew how horrible it was to be worried for other people. But this was different, this was worse. Her parents didn't even know if she was alive right now, and that was eating her up inside big time. The news had probably gotten around quickly enough, even reaching Canada at this point in time. And there was no way Evelynn could let her family know that she was alright and that they didn't have to worry about anything at all. She was safe and so was Sydney and everyone else they had met and talked to from school, and that was what mattered. Even her car hadn't been damaged, but at this point Eve really didn't think she would care if it was shattered to pieces no matter how much she loved that car. Everyone was okay, and that was the important thing. Nobody had been hurt. Everyone was okay. Those were the things Evelynn kept thinking about, trying to calm herself down after experiencing the first true life-threatening thing in her life. It was the only thing she could do to stop herself from breaking down and begin sobbing uncontrollably at any moment, which definitely wouldn't help the situation. So she tried her best staying strong for everyone - including herself.
It was selfish, but Evelynn found herself feeling happy that the earthquake had happened in Northwood and not Toronto. At least now she knew that her family and friends were safe - the selfish part being that they had no idea that she was as well. Now, all they could do was to sit around and wait for the power to come back on and for the volunteer personnel at the Community Centre to give them permission to go back to campus. Eve hoped that the dorm phones would at least work back there, so she really couldn't wait to get out of the Centre. They had put up TV screens and DVD players and kids were gathered around the screens watching old Disney classics because those were the only movies the Community Centre had around. Everything about this room made it obvious how every single person in here was just there to kill time before it was safe for them to head out to resume their lives. Not being able to do anything other than sitting down, waiting as she looked straight through the air with her phone in her hand, Evelynn found that time passed incredibly slow no matter what she did. She looked to her right, tried smiling at Sydney reasurringly as she asked her, "Do you have any service? Steven's probably pretty worried." Grimacing, Evelynn turned a bit in her seat to face her friend better as she rolled her eyes. "Mine's out. God, I can't wait to get out of here."

Evelynn and Sydney’s trip to Canada was probably the only time she’d actually enjoyed being back in her home country. It wasn’t that she hated Canada, she’d just never found it that interesting, as many people did where they’d grown up. But going there with her best friend, and visiting her home and family had really changed the way Sydney thought about Canada. It was as if she was visiting it with a new pair of eyes, as Evelynn took her places in Toronto she’d never even heard of, let alone been to. Sydney was taking to back street café’s and parks hidden behind rows of houses. Eve showed Sydney what the real capital of her home country was like, rather than the guidebook version. Taking Eve to her hometown of Greenwood was one of Sydney’s favorite parts of the trip. Very few people, besides those who lived their and their relatives and friends, knew of Greenwood. It was a tiny village in Canada, with a population of a little over 600. Some may argue that growing up around such few people isn’t good for children, but Sydney loved it. Everyone there knew everyone, which was probably one of the reasons why her Aunt’s house was always so full. Besides having three children and Sydney, there was always extra heads around the house. Everyone just came and went as they pleased, and it was one of the reasons Sydney had learnt to fend for herself. There wasn’t much to do in Greenwood, except introduce Eve to all the people that resided there, and take her to the lake in the woods which surrounded their house. As her house was always so chaotic, the lake was Sydney’s calm little place she had found years ago, and often escaped their when things got too much.
Sydney was a bearer of bad luck though, and some of that had seemed to rub off on their trip home. The two girls barely made their flight, slipping in by just minutes, but once they had boarded the plane, everything seemed to run smoother. Sydney loved plane rides; she found being so high up in the air exhilarating, and so she say happily looking out of the plane window for the whole journey home, whilst chatting away to Evelynn. Once they disembarked the plane, they collected their luggage from baggage reclaim first, seeing as theirs was the last to be loaded onto the plane, due to them being so late. After they exited the airport, they loaded their luggage into Eve’s car, as she began the drive back to Northwood. Everything took a turn for the worse after that though. The pulled in by a near by store, as a quick stop by before returning to Northwood. That was when they felt the tremors beneath them. The ground began to shake and various items of food, drink, cigarettes, magazines, you name it, fell off the shelved, landing on the floor next to their feet. Grabbing on to the nearest available surface, the cashier desk, Sydney had pulled Evelynn closer to her, as they hung on to the counter, waiting for the tremors to stop. Sydney had never experienced an earthquake before, but she knew they would be better off outside, where they didn’t have the risk of the building collapsing on top of them. Grabbing Evelynn’s arm, she ran though the store, pushing through the double doors as they made their way outside. The tremors stopped shortly after, and Eve and Sydney began to make their way over to the local Community Centre a few blocks away, abandoning her car and hoping it would be undamaged when they returned to collect it later on.
Once they were safely inside the Community Centre, the first thing Sydney did was reach for her phone, and to no surprise found out she had no signal; the telephone wires must have been damaged in the quake. Sitting down on one of the chairs next to Evelynn, Sydney pulled her in for a hug as the enormity of what had just happened hit her. Just mere hours ago, the two were sat on a plane, laughing away and chatting about their trip to Canada which they had just concluded. And here they were, roughly three hours later, having survived an earthquake when most of the surrounding buildings hadn’t. An earthquake which had reached 8.5 on the richter scale. She was sure her family must have seen the news by now, but she had no way of contacting them to tell them she was ok. Steven. She suddenly shot up, realizing he was still in the Bahamas, and like her family, had no way of knowing she was ok. Her mind began racing, her thoughts buzzing around in her head, but there was only one she could properly grasp onto. What happens now? ..Fuck.

Darkest Before The Dawn | Sydlynn
Only a few hours after their plane had landed in Los Angeles and then the unthinkable happened. Sydney and Evelynn were headed back to Northwood after visiting their families in Canada, first stopping by Evelynn's relatives in Toronto before they went to Greenwood to see Sydney's grandparents and cousins (and whoever else came by the house while they were tere) as well. In the plane going to LAX, Evelynn thought of how much this trip had opened her eyes toward her best friend - she already had her personality and her little habits and quirks down, but seeing Sydney around the people she cared for the most in this world only made her even more sure that she knew her best friend inside and out by now. All of the best sides of her were visible when she was around her family, and Evelynn had genuinely enjoyed getting to know them all - just as Sydney had warned her, they were a loud and crazy bunch, but Evelynn could tell that she really wouldn't have it any other way. If one thing was sure, it was that their trip definitely hadn't been boring. And time would tell that their trip home woudn't be either. An earthquake hit the town of Northwood just as the two of them were driving home, and they quickly stopped the car to head into a store by the road instead of moving in a town in which the ground was shaking underneath the wheels of their car. They found safety in the local Community Centre when the earthquake had stopped, finding that Evelynn's car hadn't been damaged after they had left it standing outside. Now, the two were waiting for news about their friends in and around Northwood, not knowing when it would be safe to head back to their dorms, and Evelynn thought of how she wouldn't want to be stranded here with anyone else.

"Oh, okay, I would've liked to see him as well but I guess that'll have to wait, then." Taking one of Sydney's carry-on bags to lessen her load of luggage to carry, Evelynn walked by her best friend's side through the mass of people and out of the airport. "So how was your trip? Tell me everything! Did his family like you?" Evelynn began as they loaded up her car with Sydney's baggage. Anything other than talking about her own past couple of weeks was good for her. Not that there was much to tell. All Evelynn had done was go to a few read-throughs for the play she was a swing for, but they hadn't had any of their actors call in sick yet so Evelynn was still on stand-by with them, not really having anything to do. She had gotten the part for the short film she had auditioned for, but that wasn't due to shoot for another month. Basically Evelynn had been stuck on what to do with her time. She probably would've flown to Canada to be with her family if it hadn't been for this trip she was taking with Sydney, making it a waste of money and time to fly back and forth a week before she was going there with her best friend. Stepping into the driver's seat of her car, Evelynn listened as Sydney started telling her about her trip and started the car, turning down the radio slightly so she could hear what Sydney was saying better. As her best friend spoke, Evelynn pulled the car out of the parking spot and headed back to Northwood.

If there was one thing Sydney wanted to do this Summer, it was enjoy it. Last year, she’d had her Aunt panicking about her coming down to LA by herself, and the year before that was the summer her parents had died, so neither had been very enjoyable. But this summer she was well, free, to do whatever she wanted. She’d absolutely loved going to the Bahamas; it was one of the places she’d always wanted to go, but now she’d landed back in LA, she couldn’t wait to go home with Evelynn. Being away from your family for around nine months is hard, even though the people who had custody of her weren’t her actual parents, they were the next best thing. Their house was always crazy, and full of people. They never really sat down and had a meal together, and her Aunt and Uncle weren’t that strict; they just let her and her cousins, except for Minnie, waltz in and out whenever they wanted, even if it was at 3AM. Some people could call it bad parenting, but Sydney didn’t find it bad; she thought it allowed them to have the freedom to do whatever, and they became independent because of it. They would make their own breakfast and Ryan would take them all to school, it was kind of like they were their own little family inside and even bigger family. They learned to do things all by themselves, and that helped Sydney a lot when she came to Northwood. If she’d had the parents who fussed over ever detail, cutting the crusts off your sandwiches for you cause they thought you were ‘too young to be handling sharp objects’, even at sixteen, Sydney would have found it harder at Northwood, because she wouldn’t have known how to do things herself. As Sydney pushed through the crowds at the airport, she noticed a familiar face heading towards her. ‘Eve! I missed you too,’ she replied, wrapping her arms around here best friend. ‘Nope, he’s staying there for longer with his Mum.’ she told her, before taking the handle of her suitcase, ready to wheel it behind her. ‘Ready to go?’

Yeah, it's probably pretty useful to have a friend like you, actually. Designated driver and caretaker of all of the drunk people haha.
Haha! I know! I think it’s okay that you don’t teach me, though. So I’ll be the sober friend when you’re all drunk and stuff. Haha!

This summer wasn't going the way Evelynn had planned it to - at all. She had made plans to go on a road trip, to Disneyland, getting acting jobs and visiting her family, but she had done none of that so far even though she had been looking forward to it all. Add the fact that Max had broken up with her on top of that, and yeah, you could say that this summer had pretty much sucked so far. But now that was starting to change, because Sydney was finally coming home from her trip to the Bahamas with Steven, and Eve probably couldn't be more excited. She got in her car twenty minutes early, just because she really couldn't wait any longer, and drove to the airport with a smile on her face. Sometimes, she thought that hers and Sydney's friendship could seem to be a little more than just friendly with how much they hung out together and how little time Evelynn could endure without seeing her, but that was just how their relationship was; they joked around a lot, and the whole 'we have a shipname and everything'-deal was just another one of their jokes. But Evelynn liked it that way. Finally, she parked her car on the huge parking lot of the airport and walked inside. She waited for a little while before people began emerging from the plane and Evelynn got up to look around, trying to locate Sydney's blonde head in the sea of people. When she finally found her, she headed for where she was standing, a huge grin on her face when Sydney spotted her as well. "Syd! Oh my God, I missed you. Come here, you midget," she said and hugged her best friend. "Is Steven not with you?"
California Dreaming || Sydlynn.
Although Sydney had enjoyed every minute of being in the Bahamas, there was a part of her that just wanted to go back. Being stuck with the same group of people on the same beach for three weeks straight can make you miss home and the people in it quite a bit. And Northwood was her home now, and the people in it were like her family, especially Evelynn. Sydney had probably missed her the most out of everyone, and she couldn’t wait for their trip to Canada together, and the fact she got to see her Aunt, Uncle and Cousins was a massive bonus. So much had happened since she’d been gone, like Max being shipped back off to England, which she was especially gutted about as she never even got to say goodbye to him, but she was more upset for Eve as she knew how much he meant to her. As she finally retrieved her luggage from baggage reclaim, she pulled up the handle and wheeled the suitcase out behind her as she walked through to the Arrivals lounge. She’d travelled back from the Bahamas alone as Steven had decided to stay for longer with his Mum. Making her way through the opened double doors, she looked around the airport, trying to spot Eve.

Well I guess now I have two ;) It was a different friend. And yeah, I'm pretty glad I'm not a lightweight, to be honest.
Is that friend me, or is it a different friend? Good thing that’s not you then!
