Every day, on my way to the gym or grocery store, I walk past this charming cottage with a thatched roof. It looks completely different from the surrounding buildings, which consist of two big malls and an ugly, multilevel parking lot. This is the entrance of the Queen's College, on High Street. I drew it while standing in the narrow alley called Logic Lane that opens in front of it. I like very much the dome on top of the circular structure supported by columns, so prominent on top of the entrance, so I was very surprised when I asked chatGPT to write a brief description of the Queen's college entrance and it adamantly said that there was no dome on top of it, nor columns, nor statue. It insisted that "the entrance features a vaulted archway with a series of spires and sculptures rising above the roofline". Only after I told it that I saw and drew the dome that very day, that it apologized and admitted that "it appears that there is indeed a dome structure on top of the entrance of Queen's College on High Street, Oxford". This castle-style house is located on Folly Bridge Island, a tiny island in the Thames. Francis Bacon lived here, although not in this house. This one was build by an accountant James Caudwell, in 1849 and it is covered with white sculptures. On its summit, above the ramparts, I noticed a statue of Atlas, but without the globe on its back, so that we can call it an Atlas Shrugged. As an aside, in 1851 some students decided it would have been fun to push one of Caudwell's decorative cannons into the river. This is on the corner of Via Griselda. #Griselda is the main character of an old story mentioned also in the Boccaccio's #Decameron. She was married to the Marquis of Saluzzo, Gualtieri, that happened to be a giant asshole. Seriously, the poor woman. Read the story if you don't believe me. It is a terrible, terrible story, and I cannot figure out what's the point of it. Saluzzo has also a Via Gualtieri, but at least they are not too close together. I returned to this place, this time I drew another side of the same square. When I was a child, 5y-old or less maybe, there was the atelier of a painter on the first floor of that building. There were a lot of framed paintings exposed on the balcony and on the stairs. I have this memory of child-myself walking by with my father during market day. I stopped looking to a painting. It was a Picasso-esque drawing of a human shape holding a chalk and the writing "1+1=3". I must have looked at it too much as the artist came and told me the story behind the work. He said it represented a son of a very rich person taking an exam at school. The father bribed the teacher to make his stupid son pass the test, so the teacher asked him what's 1 + 1 ? The guy still managed to answer "3". How on Earth I still remember this episode from 40 years ago??? Child-me thought that the painting was very ugly, but I didn't say. I told him I wanted to be a painter too once grew up. And look at me now, drawing the very same place, after all these years. I never saw this church without the construction site wrapping its façade. The overgrown vegetation demonstrates that the operation is not going on very fast… Anyway I like the ivy climbing the little bell tower, so I sat and draw it. Then today I was looking at some books in a bookstore, where I picked a book about Saluzzo. I opened a random page and there it was: a paragraph talking about this very same church, with an old picture of the building without jungle and construction site, portrayed from the very same angle and the very same time of the day, judging from the shadows. I learned it's called "Crociata Bianca" (White crossed). And I learned that there are also a "Crociata Rossa" (Red crossed) and a "Crociata Nera" (Black crossed), this last one I knew.
