Bruce Wayne doesn’t swear. The man raises so many kids and is trying to set some sort of example, and still lives with his very polite butler guardian who would most certainly scold him every time he swore in front of the children. He also doesn’t use substitutes cause that’s too goofy, every time Bruce wants to swear he instead just stares intensely into the middle distance

a thread from Ana Mardoll on how the concept of "consent" has been misused to harm queer people (and in ways that can harm other vulnerable people!)
however, note that the 'hypothetical' spousal consent laws mentioned already exist in places like the UK. these dangers are real and they are here

“I hope you live without the need to dominate, and without the need to be dominated. I hope you are never victims, but I hope you have no power over other people. And when you fail, and are defeated, and in pain, and in the dark, then I hope you will remember that darkness is your country, where you live, where no wars are fought and no wars are won, but where the future is. Our roots are in the dark; the earth is our country. Why did we look up for blessing — instead of around, and down? What hope we have lies there. Not in the sky full of orbiting spy-eyes and weaponry, but in the earth we have looked down upon. Not from above, but from below. Not in the light that blinds, but in the dark that nourishes, where human beings grow human souls.”
Ursula K. Le Guin, “A Left-Handed Commencement Address” (Mills College, 1983)
this passage planted itself in my consciousness when i was 24, and 10 years later, it informs so much of my approach to living, thinking, creating.

greg rucka was rlly onto something with this swears a lot, ready to commit a hate crime against booker on sight, food snob, doesnt care about anything except spices and joe, fears nothing but andy iteration of nicky like ??? i love how soft he came out in the movie but i also would have adored script nicky!!! and calling back to the wardrobe test where he had the leather jacket and the earring- it would have suited script nicky !!!
Nicky is a both a big sweet granpa who wants nile to feel comfortable AND a funny bitch/absolute troll who will fight booker when the mood strikes him and that's canon. like onion he has layer

Not directly related to De Oost but it’s in the same direction of why art plays a big role in how we talk about colonisation and racism.
Very great background piece and highlights from the Rijksmuseum about their current efforts to reframe Dutch’s colonial past through their new exhibit.
"I think it's important to point out that racism is not something that always existed," says the Rijksmuseum's head of history, Valika Smeulders. "Discrimination is universal, but to legalise it as a system that a certain group of people was meant to serve the other half of the world, that is something that was installed by colonialism, and at the end of colonialism that was reinforced through 'scientific' racist ideas. Racism was borne out of colonialism, not the other way round."
Personally grew up on a lot of British colonisation and Japanese invasion stories (it’s well very-known fact how brutal WWII Japanese invasion was). So having a production focus on other western colonisation in Southeast Asia is a very big deal because it’s still something we gloss over a lot.
Kudos to Jim Taihuttu and everyone involved in this co-production to bring this past to light.
