breathless (steve harrington x reader)
requested by anon:Â steve harrington x innocent!reader; steve finds out youâve never been kissed and offers to teach you.Â
and there it was.
out in the open, hanging in the air between the four of us, joining the scent of strawberry jam and scrambled eggs.
âiâi'm so so sorry,â dustin sputtered, his head ducking as he shoved a too-large piece of waffle into his mouth. twerp.
will and steve watched on quietly, neither of them daring to say anything just yet. thankfully so.
âno, i mean, itâs fine. itâs not like it was a secret, really.â i cleared my throat and reached for my coffee in a desperate attempt to seem nonchalant. âi just hadnât...told everyone about it...yet.â
âwell, now,â steve said, between bites of his toast, âthat sounds like a secret to me.â
âi mean, i wasnât intentionally hiding it,â i avoided looking at him at all costs.
sure, steve meant well, and he was only trying to ease the tension, but even if he was my friend and had been all summer, he was still steve harrington.
steve harrington, harkins heartthrob, who iâm sure was likely an expert when it came to things like this. which incidentally made him the last person i'd ever wanted to know about my âlate blooming.â
i told dustin last year at the snowball when he thought heâd never find a girlfriend. which i told him wasn't important, but when he assured me it was, i'd felt obligated to level the playing field.
to let him know he wasnât entirely alone.
although, apparently now that he has suzie, heâs forgotten completely about the part where i said tell anyone and youâre dead.
âuh, dustin,â will finally spoke up. âarenât we supposed to be meeting up in mike's basement?â
dustin looked up from his plate and stared at will as if to say huh?
âlike right now. dustin, go!â will began pushing him out of the booth.
âalright, alright! i'm going!â
âhey, hey, hey,â steve said as the boys tossed their scraps haphazardly onto their plates, the table suddenly strewn with stray napkins and half-eaten embarrassment. âcome on guys, careful, careful damnit!â
it was too late though. theyâd knocked over an unfinished chocolate milk and were racing out of the nearly empty diner before either of us could blink.
steve swore and i shook my head, both of us chuckling and moving to clean up the spill. our hands met briefly, and i swallowed the end of another laugh.
steve said my name, whispered it rather, and i knew that it was time to talk about the real issue.
âi know,â i told him, pushing my coffee away, âand steve, i'm sorry, i just thought that...i donât know.â
âhey, look at me,â he said.
i did, my eyebrows drawing up upon seeing his expression. i was never very good at reading others, but somehow steve just made it easy. curiosity and confusion and just the tiniest bit of hurt.
âwhen you stood me up the other dayâ was that really because you forgot, or was it something else?â
i offered him a weak excuse for a smile. âcan you blame me?â
âof course not.â he shot me back a crooked grin, very much like the one heâd been wearing when he invited me to scoopâs after closing hours.
i felt my chest crack a little.
âitâs just,â i sighed, trying to find anywhere else to look, but my eyes were almost immediately drawn back to his. âyouâre notorious when it comes to dating. i figured i would spare you from wasting your time.â
âspare me?â he lowered his head so that we were eye level. âi emptied the rest of a double-chocolatey chip pail...by myself.â
i bit back yet another laugh and--
âbut i've gotta tell you,â steveâs hand was suddenly flush against my cheek, his thumb pulling my bottom lip away from my teeth, âi think itâs very sweet.â
was i breathing?
âand if itâs this youâre worried about,â he said, his voice lower than usual, âyou couldâve just told me.â
âi'd thought about it,â i admitted, unable to filter my thoughts.
âwould you like me to show you?â he pulled his gaze away from my lips to meet my eyes again.
âsteve,â i placed my hand over his. âyou donât have to--â
âi want to,â he said quickly, pulling my forehead to his. âi promise.â
my pulse jumped, and i found myself unable to speak. unable to think, really.
âyou can trust me, you know that? i wonât bite.â his mouth was a ghost over mine, and his eyes were half-shut, already a daze. âat first.â
i'd barely been able to nod, my other hand coming up to rest against the back of his neck. that was all the confirmation steve had needed. he tilted my head and slanted his lips above my own.
âvery good. now open up just a little.â his thumb tugged on my bottom lip yet again, and i felt my entire body respond with a wave of heat, my blush staining even my ears no doubt. âand allow me to do the rest.â
my eyes were still open when steve finally kissed me. the image of his brows furrowed, eyes shut, and sole focus on meâno matter how blurred it was from closenessâsent my own lashes fluttering shut.Â
i couldnât breathe and didnât care to. all i wanted was this. steve. his hands in my hair, his nose against my cheek, and his pulse beating almost as fast as my own.
before i'd realized that i was actually kissing him back, my subconscious leading the way without me, steve was pulling away. i opened my eyes, unsure of why heâd stopped. when i saw him staring back at me, it was clear that something had changed. he seemed...
breathless.
âsteve?âÂ
ânot too bad.â he gave me another slow smile and said, âletâs try again.â

hogwarts gothic
the castle is built over a sheer cliff. every window you look out of shows a steep drop down into a ravine. you put it out of your mind. nobody seems to fall. one day, a boy from your class throws a quaffle too close to the edge. the next day he is missing, and so is his desk. nobody speaks of him after that.
you are trying to get to transfiguration, but you donât know the way. you lean on a wall as you look around you, trying to get your bearings. the solid brick disappears under your hand and you fall through to a cobwebbed room, thick with dust. you turn back, but the wall is firm and unyielding once more. this room has no windows or doors. the floor opens underneath you.
the castle is throwing a feast tonight. food is piled up on the tables higher than your head. there was a feast last night, too. and the night before. your classmates are talking excitedly around you. they say this is the first feast they have had. the food is rich and filling, the best you have ever tasted. you eat as though you are starving. there is another feast tomorrow.
there are ghosts in the castle. they drift between the walls, fog-white and blank-eyed. you have never seen so many in one place before. did they all die in the castle? you ask one but he just smiles.
you are trying to get to transfiguration, but you donât know the way. you think itâs just up this flight of stairs. as you run up, your foot catches on a trick step and you sink into the stone. panicking, you try to lift your feet, but you are stuck fast. a prefect walks by on his way down. you call out to him to try and pull you out, but he doesnât hear you. when you look down, your skin is white as marble.
in the library, you are sitting doing your homework when a cat slinks by your table. it looks up at you with piercing eyes. you remember seeing professor mcgonagall transform, filch and his cat hanging around. is this either of them? you donât remember. the cat looks at you as though it can see right through you.
the forest is forbidden, they say. your classmates keep being sent into it. some get detention. some take care of magical creatures. some are cornered in the hallway by a teacher, and told to fetch something from within the trees. when they return, there is a haunted look in their sunken eyes. the forest is forbidden, they say in a monotone. the forest is forbidden.
it is time for the mandrakes to be harvested. you are standing in the greenhouse holding a pair of shears. professor sprout tells you to take the mandrake out of its pot and start to cut it up. the twisting, screaming plant has a human face, distorted into a mask of agony. you remember last week, the mandrakes were having a party in the greenhouses. you hold it up before you. professor sprout tells you to start cutting. the mandrakeâs face looks just like yours.
you are trying to get to transfiguration, but you donât know the way. you ask a passing sixth-year how to get there. she points you to a secret passage, hidden behind a statue of an owl. it turns its head around when you stroke its back, revealing a small passage through the walls. you shuffle through the crawlspace on hands and knees for what feels like miles, until you reach the end. the sixth-year stands in the corridor before you. you ask her where the transfiguration classroom is. she points you to a secret passage, hidden behind a tapestry of an olive tree. you pull it aside open to reveal a small crawlspace. at the other end is another corridor, with that sixth-year standing there. you beg her to just take you to the classroom. she points at a painting of a snake in the opposite wall.
you are only allowed to bring an owl, a cat, or a toad to hogwarts. your best friend sneaks a mouse in and hides her in your dorm. after a week, your friend asks you to feed her for a day. you take the cage out of its hiding place and look at the mouse. she ribbits back at you.
in defence against the dark arts, you are learning how to fight a boggart. the girl before you transformed it into a jack-in-the-box, its giant, bulbous head grinning as it rocks back and forth. everyone around you is laughing. the clownâs head leers at you as you stand and shake. she was meant to turn it into something funny. the laughter is loud in your ears. the clownâs eyes stare into your soul. this is your greatest fear now. everyone else is still laughing.
you are trying to get to transfiguration, but you donât know the way. you have reached the top of one of the towers. on the wall is a door marked âtransfigurationâ - beside it is a window, showing the sky outside the tower. you open the door. there is the classroom. professor mcgonagall looks up at you as you enter, scolding you for being late. mutely, you take your seat. all of the other students have cobwebs in their hair, dust coating their robes. you open your book and take out a roll of parchment. when you leave the classroom, you find yourself in the dungeons.

wake up (billy hargrove x reader)
beware: season 3 spoilers ahead. proceed with caution.
request by @jodibullock1â; a happier ending for billy. literally anything where he ends up okay (like he deserves.)
description: the end is near for everyone, especially billy, but if thereâs anyone who has a chance at getting through to himâitâs you.
wake up. wakeup. wakeupwakeupwakeâ
when i finally came to, robin and steve were hovering above me. i could see mouths moving, lips forming words, but couldnât hear them over the roar in my head. Â
or wait, noâ the roar grew louder, as if it were coming from behind me.Â
trying to turn around, the flashing lights whirling above me, i realized where we were. on the second floor balcony of the starcourt mall.Â
in the middle of the end of the world.Â
i felt hands at my waist, under my arms. steve was attempting to help me to my feet, and robin was lighting the wick of a fireworkâ
a firework?
she threw it down into the food court, where it erupted. flares of red and gold and green forced the monster back and away from two lone figures. through the midst of chaos and the mindflayerâs staggering, it wasnât easy to make them out.Â
but then it hit me.Â
the last few minutes rushed back to me and the only thing i could think to ask steve was âbilly?â
he looked back at me and in his eyes i saw all i needed to know. it wasn't good. i had to get down there.
âhey, hey, hey!â steve grabbed me by both arms, having guessed what i was about to do. âheâs not all there anymore, heâs not billy. do you get that? if you go down there, thereâs nothing weââ he gestured between him and robin, âcan do to protect you from him.â
âsteve,â i said, my voice wavering. my best friend, my comrade, steve-the-hair-harrington was on the verge of tears. âi know.â
âa little help over here, guys!â we looked to see robin launching another rocket of a firework at the beast. unfortunately, it found our hiding spot behind the counter of a restaurant, and shot a tentacle out our way.
it missed, hitting the stall next to us, but it likely wouldn't next time. as it recoiled, i saw it nearing nancy and johnathan, who were opposite the balcony from us.
âgo,â he said, âbut you better come back.â
âis that an order, dingus?â i tried to laugh, but it didnât come out right. i hugged him quickly, just in case.Â
âyou bet your ass it is, nerd.âÂ
âaffirmative, sir,â i said half-heartedly. steve let go first, and i jumped over the counter. with one leg over the side already, i stopped. âhey robin?âÂ
âyeah?â she had a match between her teeth and was preparing to light another. i knew she had no idea how badass she was, but i made a mental note to tell her later.
âpass me one of those, will you?âÂ
âi'll do you one better.â she gave me three, ruffled my hair, and sent me off.Â
i didnât go far though. i hadnât planned to just yet.
i reached the edge of the balcony and called out to the mindflayer. âover here, asshole!âÂ
âget down!â i looked back to see steve and robin, both utterly confused. âi said get the hell down!âÂ
in front of me a tentacle was making its way towards us, but was thrown off course. something on the ground level had caught its attention.Â
âno, wait!â i swore, taking off my sneakers. there wasnât anytime for thinking. âhey, this way, buddy! over here!â i flung my shoe, and it stopped. i tossed the other, and it growled.Â
fumbling with the lighter i continued to call the beast towards me, hoping to buy el the time she needed to get out of there. eventually, robin and steve caught on and they began throwing kitchenware, their shoes, whatever they could find.
the monster roared and finally headed our way. i waited for it to get close. close enough that i could count its teeth before i lit the firework and tossed it into its gaping mouth.Â
and then i darted for the escalator, using the middle of it as a slide to save time. a trick i'd learned from robin earlier.Â
now on the ground level i could see billy and el. they were only a few feet away, and she was...el had her hand resting against his cheek and he was crying.Â
steve had been wrong. this was billy looking back at el, this was billy shaking with emotionâ with the same mix of fear and strength i'd seen burning in him a thousand times before when we were alone.
âbilly,â i said, caught so off guard that i stumbled forward. my voice was so quiet, too soft to have been heard over the screeching of the mindflayer and fireworks, but somehow, someway, heâd heard me.Â
his eyes traveled from my bare feet up to meet my gaze. my name fell from his mouth, and my heart lurched inside my chest. he was still in there. we still had time.Â
i broke out into a sprint, needing to be by his side, when suddenly the wind was knocked out of me. i watched billyâs eyes grow wide, his scream piercing the air, before i realized he was getting smaller and father away.Â
the monster had gripped me in one of its many arms, and i could barley breathe as i was lifted into the air. luckily, it hadnât pinned my arms, and if i could just reach my pocketâ
âwe donât need you,â billy said. i looked down at him confused, until i realized heâd been taken over again.Â
âbilly, wait,â i sputtered, still rising up towards the skylight. âplease, let me go!â
âwe just need el. sheâs the key,â he told me. i tried wrenching free, but being this high up, there was no point. if i got free or if this thing decided to let me go, i'd be dead as soon as i hit the ground.Â
âweâre going to stay here,â he assured me, in that cold and distant voice, âand she is going to let us.â Â
el. he meant el.Â
who had disappeared from behind him. wherever she was, whatever she was doing, i just hoped sheâd make it fast. the hold that this thing had on me was so tight that i was starting to lose oxygen up here.Â
âi donât understand!â i struggled to find the words. something, i had to do something to stall him. âyou donât want this billy. this isnât you.â
the sound of fireworks had ceased, and i guessed that theyâd all run out of them. shit, shit, shit. i dropped mine before i was caught.Â
âall this work, all this pain. weâve been building it for her.â below me, billy laughed and shook his head. âyou think you and your little friends can save the world? there is nothing that any of you can do now!âÂ
âi'm not trying to save the world, dumbass!â i was now fighting against the tightening grip for any bit of air i could get. âi'm justâtrying to save you.â
he sneered and the monster howled with him, its mouth opening up directly beneath me. i was fuming with frustration, knowing that if i couldn't get through to him now, then i would done for pretty soon. unless el was ready.
âbilly, please!â i cried, âplease, you have to fight him. you have to wake up! think about me, think about your mom, think about maxâyour little sister, maxine.â i broke off, gasping for air. âif you do this, sheâll be all alone. you donât...want that. i know you donât! because then sheâd be justâlike...you.â
the grip thatâd been cutting off my circulation eased up a bit and i took that as a sign that i was breaking through. his body went rigid with tension, but i didnât let that stop me. i knew he hated being reminded of his mother, but i didnât see another wound to press. i was out of options.
âsheâs doesnât know, does she? she doesnât know what itâs like to be you. max never even knew her, but you...you called every night for a year. do you remember telling me that?â
billy knelt to the ground, now trembling. i could see the sweat beading off of him from here, soaking through his tank.Â
he was doing it, he was fighting.Â
âbilly!â i tried to hold his attention. âdo you remember? last christmas...we traded necklaces. after you told me about her, you gave me her necklace. i swore iâd never take it off as long as youâd wear mine. you promised me.âÂ
i could taste blood in my mouth, but otherwise felt entirely numb. âlook at me, damnit!âÂ
he did, and i was able to realize that his trembling had actually been sobbing. he looked at me and the rest of the world went blank. there was only him.Â
he was trying to say something, but i couldnât hear him. not until he allowed himself to sag against the floor entirely. my name. it was just my name over and over again, and then he was apologizing. to me, to max.Â
âlet me go, billy,â my voice broke from somewhere inside my chest. he twitched, trying to pull himself towards me. âyou donât have to do this. please, just put meââ
suddenly, steve and robin and lucas were tackling billy, pushing him backwards and breaking our connection.Â
ânow!â i heard nancy scream and suddenly fireworks were fired in their direction, and iâ
i was falling.
i didnât feel it at first, it was as if i were frozen above the still open jaws of the monster, and then in a rush of wind and blood and dread, i was hurtling straight down into the void.
i knew this would happen, had known the risks, and had been willing to die if it meant getting him back and keeping my friends safe, but all i knew in that moment was fear, blind and terrible fear.Â
i never even got to scream before the world cracked beneath me and everything froze.Â
actually froze.Â
i could feel the strain of the world trying to balance itself out, hanging with me in the air. along with several bits of debris and sparks of light and the echoes of flesh tearing.
that being the only warning, i was still holding my breath when the monster finally combusted, and i was slowly, carefully lowered to the ground. i heaved as much air as i could into my chest, while looking around to find el.Â
i found her atop the balcony, holding tight to mike. they were both staring up at the sky that was no longer red.Â
the gate was closed.Â
weâd done it. it was over.Â
we were safe.
i whirled in the other direction to find the rest of the kids standing around billy, his body lying limp on the ground. max was kneeling over him, crying and...my stomach dropped.Â
no. no. no, no, no, no, âbilly!â i cried, my voice still breaking.
i was next to him in the time it took my heart to beat. every second felt excruciatingly slow. he couldnât be gone, he couldnât be.
âhey! hey, billy, wake up.â iâd crumpled down next to him, and max leaned back against lucas, burying herself into him.
i brushed the hair away from billyâs face, and tried to assess the damage. to look for a wound, where was the wound, there had to be a wound, but aside from a few bad cuts and bruises i couldn't find anything lethal.Â
âbilly? billy, come on, wake up!â my hands returned back to his face, and i discovered a trail of blood coming from his nose, his ears, a thin line of red appeared between his lips, and then he coughed.Â
âget him on his side now!â i didnât even recognize my voice as my own. âheâs alive! max. max, look heâs alive, heâs okay. weâre okay.âÂ
i tugged him on his side with the help of the kids, and beat between his shoulder blades in an attempt to force the blood out of his system to keep him from drowning in it.
he began spitting it out, and gasping for air, his eyes snapping open the moment he was able to take in a deep breath.Â
âbilly,â max said.Â
i cried watching them together and allowed steve to wipe the blood from my face while robin tucked herself into my side.Â
we were gonna be okay.Â
billy let maxine wrap him in a hug, and only pulled away when he began coughing again.Â
i braced a hand on his back to make sure he wasnât going out on us, but then he was laughing. when he looked at me, he smiled. the sort of smile that if i'd been standing would have made me weak in the knees. instead i started crying, and he pulled me into him.Â
âi'm okay,â he said into my hair, as he held me close. âweâre okay.â
âdonât mock me, asshole,â i pulled away to look at him again. âi thought you were dead.â
âi know,â he rested his forehead against mine. âi know, and i'm sorry. all those things i did, all that pain i caused, all those people iââ
âshhh,â i placed both hands on his face, one thumb over his lips to stop him from spiraling. âbilly, itâs okay. youâre here now and youâre you again. thatâs all that matters, okay?â
âthank you,â he said, turning to kiss the palm of my hand. âthank you.â
he grabbed my chin and tilted it towards him. before he could finish thanking me again, i pressed my lips against his. he returned the kiss with the same urgency, the both of us still having to part for air more often than usual.Â
i felt him smile as he gave up trying to hold himself upright. we fell slightly backwards, him leaning mostly against me for strength. i laughed into the kiss. i was alright with that as long as it meant he was here with me, at the edge of the end of the world.Â
a fate that weâd all managed to escape again.

butterfly bones
description; a darkly curious draco & a delicate reader.Â
he is trembling when he finally gets to touch her.
his fingers, pale as winter from building nerves, are sliding up her shoulder. to drag across her neck, under the thin fabric of her top, and down the sides of her waist.Â
he has grown unfathomably intoxicated by the softness of her skin. fragile. she is fragile in his hands, sighs and pleas fluttering from her rosed lips. they fill the room with echoes that make him shiver.
watching her reminds him of studying a winged creature, as if he were observing her through a looking glass. he canât stop himself from thinking about how easy it would be to pin her to the sheets, stick needles through the joints of her limbs, hold her down andâ
draco.
when he meets her eyes again, he blames the celestial promises behind them for making him break.Â
he had meant to take his time, had wanted to jot careful notes about every detail of her undressed body that he was not yet familiar with.Â
draco.
her name leaves his mouth in a rush of air, a whisper to the old gods. it occurs to him distantly that eventually she, too, will be written into the book of saints, among all other cruel, faultless divinities.
now, heâs pulling her closer.Â
she is startled, a martyr in a web, he knows, but thereâs something in her he needs, something she has that he craves.
dra-Â
he was not born a saint, he was born to devour. to carve and mangle and take, not to savor.Â
for a while they are lips, tongues, teeth, and nothing more. her prayers sound like his name and taste unnaturally sweet when he steals them from the back of her throat.Â
but, what threatens to crack the ground beneath him, is how desperately she seems to need him.
he tells her as much, too.Â
although, it is not until his mouth nears her chest that he is reminded of how delicate she is.Â
here, in the space between, is where she begins to twitch.
his hands have found new places to warm. the underside of her breast, for example, where it is hard to compare her heartâs th-thump, th-thump, th-thumping to anything other than the frantic flapping of wings.Â
all the while, his other hand has nearly reached the place heâs wondered most about.Â
âdra-draco,â she says again, and he understands the reason behind the stutters; scripture has rendered itself unworthy to them both.
and so he lays her down before him, the surrendering of grace all together.Â
she fits herself into his hand like a glass, and he is curious to know if that is what she is made of.Â
he wants to know if the skin heâs spent so much time warming is home to a crystalline skeleton. he needs to know.
without any more hesitation, they are tangled again in a feverish and endless consuming of one another. a rapture of bitter-sweet curses and butterfly bonesâthey disappear into each other.

the sound of stars (pt. 1)
description; draco x reader drink to drown their thoughts. atop the astronomy tower they find themselves lost amongst the nightâs fog & whispering stars.
neither of them ever had any troubles when it came to holding her own against liquors. Â
and yet, here they both were. sleepily passing an emptying bitter spirit, the name of which theyâd both forgotten. this was good. this meant it was doing its jobâ helping them to forget. Â
the reason sheâd been crying had long escaped her hazy memory. the only hint, a slow burning serpent thatâd recently been carved into her forearm. it writhed beneath the sleeve of her shirt.
after only a short while of joining her up here, draco, too, had forgotten all the worries thatâd been consuming himâeating away at his insidesâfor weeks.
so together they sat, legs dangling over the side of the astronomy tower, sharing a seat under the arch of an open window.
looking over the edge, past their bare feet, the rose garden was dark and its twisting pathways were blackening under the dim light of the stars. the clouds had settled low enough that she and draco were idly counting the roses through the dusk coloured haze.
as time passed, the risks of reaching out and grasping for the wisps of clouds floating by no longer seemed enough to keep her from them. the moon shone against her skin as her hand emerged from the shadows theyâd been hiding in.
draco watched as she leaned imperceptibly forward, the features of her face slowly illuminating. then he saw it.
heâd never thought of the mark as anything but a curse, but looking at it curled around her arm, it appeared almost elegant to him.
âcareful,â he told her, hand shooting out to prevent her from wandering too far. the clouds scattered, and when her eyes caught his, he was reminded of when heâd first been chosen.
he could see it, written there in her gaze, that she hadnât asked for it. of course she hadnâtâ neither had he. draco offered her the bottle.
their fingers brushed as she took it from him, and he noted the way she had bristled. his touch was cold, he knew. it always was.
she was shivering and he found himself wishing he had not discarded his robes before he left the confines of his room.
soon she was back to sulking in the shadows. those eyes again downcast, peering into the bottle as if trying to cipher an invisible message left at the bottom.
draco took out his wand, and uttered a spell or two beneath his breath. he wondered if she heard him and decided to ignore him, or if sheâd truly become so lost in her thoughts to notice his silly little incantations.
nevertheless, he continued to whisper a few phrases, moving his wand to and from as he did.
she only looked up when a star, the size of the small jewel around her neck, flew into the bottle she was holding. it startled her so badly that she nearly dropped the thing.
bewildered, she turned to draco, who was still lazily conducting with his wand. his eyes met hers, and she noted the sort of mirth she suddenly realized had been missing from him and his usual behavior for quite sometime now.
âwhat are you doing?â it was the first time sheâd spoken since draco found her sitting here alone.
the blue glass of the bottle was glinting between them. flickers of swirling, kaleidoscopic light bounced off of the walls in the astronomy tower and caught on every feature of their own grim faces.
his lips parted with a blue smirk when he said, âiâm trying not to think so much.â
âthink so much about what?â her question was thwarted with yet another magic act. it was mesmerizingâ tuffs of the clouds she had been reaching for were now swimming around her.
she hummed with the ghost of laughter as a few of them stopped to gently nudge her cheek and stroke her skin. they intertwined themselves into strands of her hair and were dancing dreamily about her robes.
stars, small as pearls and slowly blinking, began to weave themselves into the wisps of fog and mist floating around her. she gasped as she watched them wink at her, their lights twinkling like bells as they moved.
âdraco,â she breathed, but she had already forgotten what it was she wished to say, because a single star had set itself in the empty palm of her hand.
âthis one is trying to tell you something,â he told her.
his wand had stopped moving, and he was now leaning back against the pillar of stone behind him. those tired grey eyes were closing, the promise of sleep not being very far away.
âhow do you know?â she cradled the little star, trying and failing to tear her eyes away from him while he drifted off.
the veins webbed over his lids and the one or two snaking up from around his neck near the opening of his unbuttoned shirt were the colour of starlit lazuli in the glassy reflection of the bottle.
âyou canât hear it?â the trace of a smile played in his voice. âthe star is whispering. bring it closer to you.â
she didnât try to hide her skepticism, but still, she brought the star up to her ear.
watching draco fall asleep, she waited for the star to speak. his fingers unfurled from his wand and his head drooped too far to the right for him to have been awake.
bored of waiting, she had nearly been ready to assume that the boy had gone mad and drunkenly believed the star to be telling secrets, suddenlyâ the humming ceased and a soft purr of a whisper began to unwind.
âbeautiful,â it said. âyou look beautiful tonight.â
âwell, thank you,â she smiled, despite her heavy shoulders.
âyou even look pretty when you cry, too. in fact, i always seem to find it rather hard not to stare.â
âdraco?â she sat straight up and made to drop the star. she wasnât sure what to say to that, to him.
âshhh,â the starâ no, he hissed. âquiet, donât wake me yet. just let me say one thing more?â
she blushed and before she could reason with herself, she nodded. âvery well. what is it then?â
âyouâre not in this alone.â
a few pieces of cloud gently raised her arm and revealed her dark mark. she stilled in response to his assurance.
âwhatever it is heâs making you do, i want you to know that you donât have to do it alone.â
âstop.â she couldnât take her eyes off of dracoâs unmoving form. he was still deep in sleep while she was now tingling with wild nervousness.
âwhat ever reason you have for joining, i wonât hold it against youâŚâ like everyone had done to him.
the promise heâd made was every where, and perhaps it was meant to be friendly, but the sting of knowing exactly how doomed the two of them were made her entire body weak.
dropping the hand that was holding the star, she moved away from the window, but the threat of falling still seemed imminent. she felt empty, as though the dark mark had already hollowed her out.
they stayed that way for some time.
she with her back against the wall, and he with one leg over the edge.
finally, the star winked out and draco began to stir with awareness. the clouds and stars that remained opened to encircle the both of them when draco kneeled in front of her.
he brushed away the hair that hung over her face like a curtain. the one thing hiding her from him now were the elbows sheâd propped against her knees.
he brushed those away, too. this time his touch was feather soft, reminding her of the wisps and stars from moments ago.
the clouds weaved themselves through her tousled hair, the stars cast abnormal highlights across her features, and the blue glass still illuminated the shadows of her eyes.
looking at her made draco forget not only what he was about to say, but also everything before and after the moment sheâd looked back at him.
there was only tenderness in her expression, and he wondered about nothing else than if she was as soft as she seemed.
he tried to break the spell, but his hands were already on either side of her face, his thumbs just below the jut of her chin. her pulse met the tips of his fingers wherever they trailed.
and then he felt the promise of her in the air around them, stealing what control he had left.
âtell me,â he said suddenly, breaking off to clear his throat. âtell me to think of something else.â
her lips parted with a question, and it only weakened his will.
âtell me to think of something other than you, because iâ canât.â
she swallowed before bringing a hand to touch the clenched jaw he was wearing, wondering just how hard he mustâve been trying to restrain himself.
âyou could think about the stars if youâd like,â she said, âor about being somewhere else, somewhere far away from here.â
âis that what youâre thinking about?â he found himself closer to her, so close now that he could smell the wine theyâd shared.
she leaned up off of the wall, and let her other hand grip the crinkled collar of his shirt. their breathing was shallow now, and the stars seemed to mock their quiet sounds of desperation.
though, all was silent when she shook her head and answered him with a simple, âno.â
