Before cemeteries existed, families would commonly be buried together in the ground, close to their homes. They took comfort knowing they would remain with people they loved after passing.

Churchyard burials around the 17th century popularised the use of individual headstones, however they were common among the wealthy and not so much an option for the poor, especially the use of quality materials that would last longer.

The victoriana era helped change this popularised modern memorials and a wider variety of materials, inscriptions and decorative options.

During the early 19th century, candles and oil lamps were relied on once darkness had fallen.

In the 1820s they had developed the wicks to curl out of the flame as they burned, this eliminated the need for trimming which plagued the earlier candles.

During the 19th century, scissors were hand-forged with elaborately decorated handles. They were made by hammering steel on indented surfaces known as 'bosses' to form the blades. The rings in the handles, known as bows, were made by punching a hole in the steel and enlarging it with the pointed end of an anvil.

During the Victorian era, handwear as a fashion piece saw extreme growth in popularity, a symbol of wealth and status. Gloves were made with a variety of materials such as velvet leather and silk. They were quite decorative and beautifully complimented the outfit.
