Musings on Misumi and the future of Y & D

Ok, here it goes. My first post. Forgive me, as I’m new to Tumblr and have really no clue what I’m doing. I just felt compelled to share some ideas after sifting through so many magnificent Saezuru posts!

Misumi has always been someone that intrigued me, though not in a positive way. My interpretation of this character is excessively dark and dangerous. I believe that he only ever moves in his own interest and would exterminate anything and anyone in his path in order to get what he wants.

Amou: Misumi seemed to have good intentions after Amou’s mother died. After all, he paid for his education etc. and didn’t purposely pull him into the Yakuza. There is where his benevolence (and perceived duty to his late wife) ends. Because where is Amou now? Right by his side, where it benefits him. Looks to me like he didn’t try very hard to deter the kid, though we all know that he most certainly could. While Amou seems to look to Misumi as a parental figure, I’m not convinced Misumi has the same attachment. I understand that for Yakuza with family there are really only two options… keep them close and protected, or cut all contact for their own good. It just doesn’t seem to me like M did what was best for A despite having the option.

Yashiro: Misumi seems VERY possessive of Y. I believe it stems from the “usefulness” Y presents to M. When Y was laying in the back alley in the winter cold, not caring whether he lived or died, M could clearly see that Y has no strings attached at all. No friends, no family, no ambition, no hopes or dreams. Who could possibly be a better subordinate than someone who wants nothing for themselves. Y is the perfect Yakuza underling. M used Y to his hearts content and in return, gave him a place to belong and a way to live…. Though it may seem to others like it was done out of pity or maybe even affection, I beliebe it was coldly calculated.

That mindset is probably why he has so much lenience for Y and his shenanigans. He knows that Y is a mere shell of a man without attachment and banks on it. That’s why he threatened D when he was carrying Y. That’s why he refused to take up D after Y “finally got rid of him”. That’s why he told Y to fire him after just one glance at him. He probably only decided to drop the case after hearing that he’s impotent and didn’t see a future between Y & D because of it. M keeps insinuating that Y should finally ditch Kageyama. He wants Y as unattached as humanly possible without pushing him too far where he could develop resentment. Y very much seems like M’s pet-project of raising “the perfect yakuza” to have his back.

And all of these indicators point to M quite possibly becoming very violent should he ever find out about the extent of Y & D’s involvement. I wouldn’t be surprised if he put a hit out on D or something of the sort. And boy, will he be pissed when he finds out about Amou’s involvement and the fact that he was kept in the complete dark about all of this for so many years.

I think that’s exactly the showdown that will end this magnificent manga. The struggle for Y & D to survive and remain together despite their respective bosses finding out and disapproving of their involvement.

And here’s my wild speculation:

I believe Y going completely blind will be their only way out. To me, it looks like Yoneda-sensei set the stage that way starting with Hirata blinding Y in one eye. Whether it’ll be an accident, another injury or maybe even intent that’ll take the second eye, I believe it’s the only way for Y to escape the grasps of Misumi and still live. I have a hard time imagining a future for D, however. Maybe his boss will have empathy and cut him some slack, considering he has saved his daughter’s life? Unless Misumi manages to wipe them all out before Y goes blind? Then they’d both be free. I can only hope for a happy ending. They both so desperately deserve it!

Hello Steve team! Answer this, without thinking and from the heart. What's your favorite panel/cover/something so far in the manga? Mine is still Doumeki and Yashiro's first time in Doumeki's apartment *Heart eyes*. Thanks for your hard work!!

This is an easy one for me. It's actually NOT any particular moment or panel or cover, it's any time that Yashiro is reduced to this expression by Doumeki.

Any time this cool guy who has it all worked out, crumbles under the weight of love.

When reality creeps up on him and leaves him stunned that OMG HE'S LOVEABLE! SOMEONE LOVES HIM!

And even though he thought he could control the outcome, Doumeki is a force to be reckoned with.

There to save him.

Challenge him.

Make him lose his shit!

And absolutely to love him.

Yashiro, who had been a really good judge of people, a guy who could read anyone, couldn't read Doumeki.

So he never saw love coming. Even when he wanted it to be like that, he couldn't believe in himself.

But what was true for Yashiro then....

Is even more true now...

I really can't wait to see the face he'll make when he finally gives in to love.
