LISTEN, I WILL DIE ON THE HILL OF STANNING MACE WINDU AS AN AMAZING JEDI. I love that each Jedi is amazing for themselves, that each one is the best Jedi they can be, that being a True Jedi is about what that means for them themselves, but if you asked me to point to a Jedi that embodies so much of their philosophy and compassion and all the best of them?  Mace Windu is on that list in a heartbeat. Mace was a stern-face person, yes, but he cared very deeply about the Jedi Order and about the people around him.
Tumblr media
Look at his face, as he’s worried about Yoda!  THAT IS SOMEONE WHO CARES DEEPLY. He also cared about standing up for the last Zillo beast in existence, even when he knew that there wasn’t much chance he could do anything.
Tumblr media
He also cared about protecting and saving the clones around him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
He also cared about Anakin–he defends him to Obi-Wan in the Attack of the Clones deleted scenes, telling Obi-Wan to trust him.  He banters with Anakin while overseeing the cadets in The Clone Wars.  He believes Anakin immediately in Revenge of the Sith, even after Anakin accepted Palpatine’s nepotism.  He tells Anakin to stay back when they go to arrest Palpatine because he’s protecting Anakin. Even when Anakin was being kind of a shit when he wasn’t granted the unearned rank of Master (and had just accepted Palpatine putting him onto the Council, rather than earning it himself), Mace is never more than mildly stern with him at most.  Frankly, Anakin deserved a lot more than someone being mildly stern at him (he may not have asked for Palpatine to put him on the Council, but he accepted it and then was upset when he wasn’t granted the rank of Master, yeah, no shit Mace told him to take a seat). He cared about Prosset Dibs, who tried to murder him because he was falling to the dark side, and Mace turned around and said Prosset was as much a victim of this war as anyone, that he shouldn’t be faulted for it, that it was their duty to bring him back to the light.  They sent him to work in the Archives, where he was presumably free to continue to make his own choices.
Tumblr media
He advocated for leniency and rehabilitation for Boba Fett, rather than having him sent to prison as a child, even though he was ignored. He struggled with the Jedi being drafted into the war, because they weren’t meant to be soldiers in this way, but the Republic seemed to need them, people were going to die if the Jedi didn’t step up to help, and yet Mace still clearly struggled with this decision because there were no easy answers and he cared deeply.
Tumblr media
THAT IS NOT THE FACE OF SOMEONE WHO DOESN’T CARE. Mace also has his softer moments, look at his gentle warmth with the young Twi’lek girl from Star Wars Adventures:
Tumblr media
He had a fun side–he was a theater actor and I would have paid CASH MONEY to see that!
Tumblr media
He and Yoda had an absolute JOY of a friendship–that conversation they have about what Queen Julia sees in Jar Jar just reeks of two old friends who have spent decades ribbing each other. Or look at the gif above where Mace is deeply worried about Yoda! Or  ANY TIME THEY SIDE EYE EACH OTHER. THEY ARE SO MUCH FUN.
Tumblr media
Mace was also incredibly patient with Jar Jar–yes, he expressed some frustration at times (but literally everyone does with Jar Jar, from Qui-Gon to Obi-Wan to Padme to Bail, he takes time to grow on you), but he warmed up quickly to Jar Jar and was so gently warm with him by the end, when Jar Jar says they make a great team, the respect and affection in Mace’s voice when he says, “Indeed.” is plain to hear. And that’s not to say Mace was perfect, he absolutely had to struggle to get to where he is, and that’s one of the reasons I admire his character so much. He wasn’t born with his cool and calm demeanor, he had fire and anger inside of him–
Tumblr media
Because he cared–he was angry at what was happening on Mathas, to its people, the way they were being scammed by a conman pretending to be a Jedi, he was angry about the misuse of the name of the Jedi, and that was something he genuinely had to work on. Cyslin Myr says, “A fire burns inside you, Padawan.  That, in itself, is not inherently wrong.  It is my job to help you temper it.  This is why I chose you to accompany me on missions.”
Tumblr media
Because Mace’s heart hangs heavy to see the suffering of these people, he’s angry that they’re hurting this way, and he has to temper those feelings. Mace Windu is not an angry man, not because he is unfamiliar with anger, but because he has faced himself and strengthened himself and tempered himself, through his faith, through his religion, through his culture, through his connections to others, through his self-reflection, through his Jedi beliefs. Mace is a character whom I love dearly because he’s so much of what I admire about how he’s defined himself, how much he cares about those around him, how he continued to offer compassion even when he knew it was futile, whether it was fighting for the Zillo beast or Boba or offering battle droids a better path, Mace Windu believed in the ideals of the Jedi Order and was true to his faith. MACE WINDU WAS AN INCREDIBLE JEDI AND AN INCREDIBLE PERSON. AND ALSO THE CUTEST BB YOU HAVE EVER SEEN OH MY GOD:

Anakin and Slavers
"His undoing is that he loveth too much"
George Lucas
One thing that I always liked about George´s work in relation to Anakin and slavery is how out of the left field he and Dave Filoni wrote Anakin´s relationship to the people who owned or saw him as a property at one point or another and yet it makes total sense for his character.
For example kid Anakin has no doubt that Slavery is horrible and at 9 he is actually working towards developing technology to help free his Mom, friends and himself from it. He hates with capital H the fact those people have control over the life and death of other people but at the same time he has great compassion and kindness which his mother helped nurture. This along with the fact that Watto was the only adult male figure who was around during his early chilldhood, this complicated his feelings towards slavers in a very tragic way.
Tumblr media
Anakin feared Watto´s violence and didn´t for a moment doubt he would have been willing to sell off his mother or him if the customer got to a big enough price but at the same time he listens to his advice when he travels to the dune sea to do his work with the jawas and his pov is almost as important as his Mom´s, in the novelization of TPM Anakin remembers not to talk to strangers or to get close to Tuskens Raiders camps thanks to Watto´s advice.
So in Anakin´s mind, Watto is someone he fears but also someone he takes advice from, respects to a point, sometimes gets sassy to and actually listens to almost as a father figure BUT at the same time he has no doubt he would activate the killing chip if he tried to escape.
Pain/abuse/fear mixed with care/advice(sounds familiar?) Anakin knows slavery is awful but he can´t help but see Watto as a person because of who Anakin is, Annie is a kind and understanding person and to point may justify Watto as a "Man of bussines" and "Not as bad a other masters" "It could be worse" but he definitely doesn´t trust him in the same way he does his mother, she is blood, she is family. He and Mom are a team. They shared their secrets.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The first time Anakin saw Watto again after being freed, he was a Jedi with training, almost a knight and the first thing he does to the guy who beat him and his Mom some years ago is to ask him if he can help with the ship parts Watto is working on because he noticed Watto is struggling and his bussines is falling down compared to how it was when Anakin was a kid. When Watto noticed who Anakin was he didn´t reject him and accepted his congratulations but keep himself appart, hoping to learn about his mother whereabouts.
When Watto told Anakin he sold Shmi, Anakin doesn´t have a reaction, he takes Watto´s justification of "I am sorry Ani but bussines are bussines and anyway the person who bought her freed her and married her" Anakin doubts it´s as good a picture as Watto is talking about but he takes his justification and leaves.
When he meets Owen, Beru and Cliegg he sees they are indeed nice people and the reason for his mothers suffering is something completely different that they were not able to stop so he doesn´t blame them for her fate. When Anakin lost his mother it was only natural for him to seek a family, someone he could share how he really felt and his secrets, he could not be part of the Lars family but Padme was willing to love him so she became his new confirmed family, right along with Obi-Wan and Ahsoka but while he had to show himself different to them, he didn´t had to do that with Padme, just like he did with his mother.
Tumblr media
In the clone wars Anakin shows again this complex view of slavers with Queen Miraj Scintel, the cartoon goes out of it´s way to show she looked at him as pretty property and he didn´t let her forget that and actually it was strongly suggested he may have been raped by her at some point to keep safe Obi-Wan, Rex, Ahsoka as well as the people they wanted to save while he got enough soldiers to stage their rescue. Anakin had a plan the whole time just as he did as a kid so he keep his cool even when he saw another slave choose suicide over keep being under the control of Scintel. Yet in the end when the Queen was killed by Count Dooku Anakin felt sorry for her, he could not help it.
So this mix of rejection/anger/hate/disgust towards slavers mixed with pity/understanding which is something that was part of what made Anakin a good person gets used agaisn´t him in his relationship with Palpatine.
Tumblr media
He first shows himself as the father figure Anakin thought he could find in Qui-Gon before he died a better father figure than Watto had been, a father figure that didn´t reject this title like ObiWan did, Palpatine did this to get his trust as a young child and later young adult and then he showed himself as the real sith master he actually was, Palpatine knew that Anakin wasn´t a stranger to be treated as property by people who showed themselves as good advicers or somehow not as bad as others despite their actions. So Anakin´s initial compassion, kindness and understanding for people that abused him is played agaisn´t him to make him fall to the darkside and chain himself again to another worse master who didn´t just seek to use his skills and body but who wanted his soul as well.
Tumblr media
And the same reasons why Anakin justified Watto at first when he was a young kid also applied to Palpatine, he may be a sith but he ran the Republic better than those corrupt politicians, he isn´t a perfect Emperor but in Padme´s absence he is better than the alternatives. He isn´t as bad as a master and anyway I deserve this because I fell to the darkside and nobody can come back from that, if he abuses me I got this coming because I choose this and he still teaches me the ways of the force, he rescued me from Mustafar when Obi-Wan left me to die and he didn´t have to, he is all I have left.
So once Anakin´s voice died down Vader was left with many reasons to say to Palpatine "What´s your bidding my master?" because in his mind master isn´t a word that contradicts father and Palpatine became his father in all but name, this makes George´s words about Anakin fatal flaw being the fact he loved too much make complete sense and it´s a tragedy.

Obi-Wan: *sitting in a negotiation class, bored because he knows this lesson from his work with his master*
Teacher: Padawan Kenobi.
Obi-Wan: *ready to be used as an example for what not to do in a situation, as usual, sighs* Yes, Master Lee?
Teacher: What is that smell? I swear upon the force I have been trying to figure out which one of you smells like that for the past five minutes. It’s making me very hungry it smells like soup.
Obi-Wan: *sheepishly moves a bowl onto his desk* I accidentally studied though lunch. I had a ramen bowl in my bag and stole Garen’s water bottle-
Garen: Hey!
Obi-Wan: And I found out how to boil water with the force so. Lunch time.
Teacher: *head in hands* Alright. I’ll allow it because it’s not worth it to argue with a hungry teenager.
Obi-Wan: *knows fully well he could start openly eating a full meal in class with the strictest teacher and they wouldn’t stop him because he’s been known to go feral and start biting if someone tries to intervene while he’s eating after Melida|Daan* …thanks.
Garen: Ugh. Now I have no water.
Obi-Wan: sorry.

Mace called Depa "Padawan" in a real stern voice once during a Council meeting, to which she, completly flabbergasted, replied "Im 42?!"
This lead to all people on the council laughing and the meeting being completely ruined because every time one of them said something they had to start laughing again.

Oh my god I cannot believe they actually confirmed Vader specifically ordered them to set him a fake banquet table to sit at for dramatic effect in Empire. That's so painfully in character.

Okay I love the fanon Dooku and Obi-Wan dynamic and all of them getting along and being a great master and Padawan pair.
But consider...
Au where for whatever reason Dooku has to take on Obi-Wan's apprenticeship and they absolutely hate each other.
Dooku (68 and trying to get seduced to the dark side): are you going to tattle to the council again?
Obi-Wan (19 and not having it): are you going to drop protocol and try to choke someone out with the Force again?
Like Obi-Wan and Qui-Gon always had their moments of friction but the level of ice that can develop between Dooku and Obi-Wan is legendary.
Obi-Wan: Master I don't think siding with capitalists and billionaires will help the people of this planet like you think it will.
Dooku: the red tape of the republic-
Obi-Wan: is there to ensure walkways have guard rails. Do you see a guard rail here? If knighthood doesn't pan out I'm applying for a job with Space OSHA.
Dooku: Padawan the Jedi are the attack dogs of the Senate.
Obi-Wan: hey I am not the one using the force to choke people on my missions. I use my words. I think you'll find you're the one attacking--
Dooku: are you ever going to let that go?
Obi-Wan: of course Master! I know how to let go! Unlike you when you're crushing someone's windpipe!
Dooku: why you little-
Obi-Wan: *choking sounds*
Mace: you've been together for a month, surely this is just a rocky first step.
Dooku lifts his arm, Obi-Wan is biting him hanging off by his teeth: I'm going to level with you Master Windu. I was considering leaving the Jedi and joining a Sith Lord who plans to destroy the Jedi and take over the galaxy, but now my only desire is to get as far away from Obi-Wan Kenobi as I can and never speak to him again.

You know, it's really wild to me that a lot of Star Wars fans take their views of the jedi directly from the big bad Chancellor/Emperor Evil McBadguy. Just, uncritically regurgitating the bad guy talking points, like they're drinking kool-aid at the local cult, thinking that they're enlightened.

Having BIG™ feelings about how most of the Jedi that survived Order 66 were literal children.
Children whose brothers turned on them, and whose parental figures were ripped from them for reasons that they would never understand. Children who didn't know how to live in a galaxy who accepted them, much less one that didn't. Children who had to shed the identity they'd had longer than they could remember just to survive. Children who watched as their people were labeled terrorists and the things they held sacred were desecrated to the purpose of hurting the people they were made to protect.
Children who had to pick up the (often literal) sword of those who'd come before them to protect innocents and hold onto what scraps of their culture that were left. That, to their limited knowledge, believed themselves to be the very last of their kind. Children who bore the weight of bringing justice to the deaths of thousands of their kin, not through revenge, but through the restoration of peace. Who in the fight towards peace, had to once again become weapons instead of peacemakers.
Of them training padawans when they were technically still padawans themselves. Who had to teach what broken pieces of their culture that they could still remember, because they were still learners when they stopped learning. Who taught in the middle of surviving in a galaxy that was out to get them on all sides. Whose padawans never got the chance to go to Ilum, or see the Temple on Coruscant, or bond with other padawans, or any other experience that should've been theirs by birthright.
If I think about it for too long my brain stops working and I cry.
