559/559 pages ✅
Finally finished reading The Secret History!
It's hard to describe how it feels to read it. Beautiful prose and extremely heavy handed foreshadowing but in a way that feels poetic, like an old tragedy that's been modernized. I'm not sure I liked having everything neatly wrapped up at the end with abrupt clarity but I suppose most people want the end of a story to feel final and decided.
I'm going to be mulling this one over for a while

what do you mean i can’t read every book, study every academic subject, taste every food, live in every city in every country, visit every museum, listen to every single song ever produced, learn every language, meet every interesting person, memorize every particle of knowledge to ever exist ???

i do think theres something sad about how largely only the literature that's considered especially good or important is intentionally preserved. i want to read stuff that ancient people thought sucked enormous balls

Remember: languages are there to be used, to communicate. Is not about mastering grammar to the point you can recite all the rules and exceptions while sleeping, never forgetting any word and messing up a pronunciation, is about being able to communicate
Think about your mother tongue (or the language you speak the most), don't you mess up words as you speak? Or have to start from the beginning, cause you messed up your phrase? Don't you have to search how a word is spelled? What the norm is? Don't you learn about new exceptions or expressions every once in a while? As natives, we do this all the time, but because we can comunicate, because people understand us, we don't mind
So why are you minding about doing the same thing with your target language?

The hand cramps are so real. It's actually affecting my ability to keep going 😞
Buuut that's another 2 hours I put into learning a language I'll need to know in less than a month. Once this chapter is done, I'll finally be able to move on to new material!

oh so when the reader knows something i don’t it’s “dramatic irony” but when i know something the reader doesn’t suddenly i’m an “unreliable narrator” 🙄

Happy 8th anniversary to this post!
I wish I could learn languages as easily now as I did when I was in college taking Spanish for Babies (not the actual class title but it should have been). I wanted to take Japanese, Italian, or German back then but the classes were full and I just needed to graduate. I wish my brain worked as well these days. I hope this reminder of my past success propels me towards the goals I have now.

I just did all 23 Spanish activities in one sitting because I want to be done with Spanish for the rest of the week…so I can do work for other classes.
