First of all, I would like to congratulate you — most of you in this pile are about to go through a huge growth this month.

At the start of the month, I see that there is something on your mind hurting you so badly as though it is physical pain. Whatever on your mind haunts you even in your dreams. Your nightmares only stop once you get it off your chest, and whatever it is will be really ugly.

Despite all the hurt and cruelty it might bring, it is necessary to resolve it now than letting it snowball and hitting you back tenfold. The truth, be it good or bad, will always make you feel lighter than the lies that weigh you down.

Hi Pile 1! Right off the bat, what you need most right now is to rest, especially your mind. You have all sorts of thoughts running through your head right now and it’s starting to wear you down. Major Young Adult Transits

In honor of my transiting Uranus square natal Uranus going exact in a few days, let’s have a chat! Most of us on this website are young’ns, so I thought we might go through the major transits that hit everyone in their 20s. I present to you: anatomy of a quarter life crisis

Saturn square Saturn (age 22): Before we hit the Saturn return, we get the waning square. Then past that, around age 25 we get the waning trine. The Saturn cycle is probably the most famous ways to look at phases of an individual’s life. The waning square is the beginning of the conclusion of the Saturn cycle. Waning transits bring with them release, and as a social planet, Saturn deals with our direct interactions with others. In contrast to the waxing square at age 7, where we build up Saturnian energy within ourselves, attending school and focusing Saturn’s hard work and discipline inward, the waning square sees us directing that Saturnian energy outward. Many of us enter the workforce at this age. Most of us pick up new responsibilities here, the cost of living in a society. We begin to reap the benefits of the earlier phases of the Saturn cycle, and we are called upon to apply what we have learned to new challenges. This is the test: did you learn the lessons you were meant to from the rest of the Saturn cycle? What happens during this period sets us up for our Saturn Return, and the next phase of our lives.

Uranus square Uranus (early 20′s): In modern times, you are reasonably likely to live to your Uranus return around age 84. But first, the waxing square! To me, this is the quintessential quarter life crisis transit. Uranus rules the parts of ourselves than are rebellious, innovative, drawn to change for the sake of change. It’s also a society-minded planet, and its natives are interested in making their mark on the world. People going through this waxing square are feeling extra restless and directionless. We’re struggling with the need to break free of traditions that don’t make sense to us, but we aren’t sure what to replace them with. Since this transit is waxing, this energy is building up in the individual. We feel such an intense pull to be different and to find our truth, but  we don’t know how to direct that energy. This is usually a time of big changes in a person’s life, and we come out the other side with a better understanding of ourselves and our direction in life.

2nd Jupiter Return (age 24): This transit happens around every 12 years, so it won’t be the first time Jupiter’s completed a cycle in your life. During our first Jupiter Return, we become teenagers, and our lives explode outwards into new experiences, new emotions, new changes. Jupiter transits are often associated with luck and ease, but I think it’s important to remember that Jupiter is indiscriminate in its growth. At this return, we close the book on the previous period of expansion - for most of us, this has been middle school through college (if we attended) and entering the workforce. During the Return, we accept what our investments have brought us. This is when everything comes back around. It’s also when we begin a new cycle of growth. Maybe during this cycle we will start families, travel the world, move up in our careers, buy houses, and create new relationships. 

Neptune sextile Neptune (late 20′s): Barring radical developments in medicine, none of us are going to reach a Neptune return. At most, we might make it to the opposition at age 82 but probably nothing major past that. I sort of hesitate to include this one because I tend to associate sextile transits with conscious effort, so we probably won’t see any major life changes related to this transit unless we consciously take advantage of it. This transit functions in the background, making things subtly easier for the native in the realm of understanding and faith. We feel like we are able to tap into our subconscious and confront our dreams and beliefs. We come out of this transit with a stronger harmony between our reality and our perceptions, and with a bit more inner peace.

Saturn Return (age 29): This is the most famous one! Famous for being everyone’s least favorite transit :/ With an orbital period of 29 ½ years, Saturn returns to its position in our natal charts right before we turn 30. The stunning conclusion to our 20′s! This return brings a conclusion to our first cycle of responsibility. We have been shaped and molded and carved by the entire Saturn cycle prior, and we receive the fruits of our labor. The quality of the energy you have put in the entire Saturn cycle thus far determines what you will get out of this Return. Regardless, this is often a difficult time in our lives because we are experiencing a large shift. We are wrapping up one chapter in our lives and opening another. New tasks will appear to us, new trials begin to form, there are new lessons to learn. Many of us will feel overwhelmed at this time, but it’s okay. Saturn knows when it’s doing.

Working through the Tarot: Eight of Swords

The figure is bound and blind. She’s alone. I got the sense that she’s some sort of damsel being offered up to some monster, but there’s also a calmness to this card, a long pause in movement or activity. She doesn’t seem panicked and she doesn’t seem to be fighting against her situation. She seems to accept it fully. Her dress’s color can symbolize passion, action, great strength. I think she possesses a great amount of fortitude and is perhaps conserving her energy or looking inward to determine her next step. The color of the dress is also a contrast with the greyness around her— she has the power to overcome her situation. The looking inward bit is crucial. By being cut off from movement and seeing, she can “turn the light and shine within,” to quote Hongzhi. 

Even if she was bound against her will, her situation is not so dire. The ropes are loose- it looks like she could just slip out of them if she wishes. She could also use the swords to cut herself free. Why else are they there, I wonder? The tips of their blades are buried into the earth and they all stand up straight around her, either to protect her or box her in. Though if she were to knock up against one she may inadvertently free herself. Wisdom is not something we wield, necessarily, but something that comes when we need it, when we least know what we’re doing. There is definitely an element of not-knowing in this card, perhaps even the lesson of trust. When you feel most caught up, most trapped, the help you need is within arm’s reach. But keep in mind that you are not the one actually wielding the sword!  A common swords mistake, I imagine, is trying to separate logic and wisdom from feeling. But without intuition and gut feelings, wisdom becomes dry, abstract, lifeless, harsh. Both need to be in balanced, especially when the active part of wisdom cannot be accessed, as the woman cannot in this card. This card is telling you that you do not have to stay. Your greater wisdom can guide you if you take a leap and do the thing that seems scary at first. Trust the wisdom! It is bigger than you.

The first decan of Gemini corresponds to this card and further adds to the blockage and confusion of this card. This part of gemini has to do with naming, with dividing the world into its smaller and smaller parts. There’s an appetite for knowledge, here, to see all the possible solutions to a problem. But too much information can cloud one’s judgment or distract one from the decision in front of them. In a way, this woman is stuck between too many decisions or paths (represented by the swords) and is stuck choosing between them. There’s interference. Sometimes it can be external as well. Solutions do exists, however, and though you may not have full clarity on them, going forward will help get you there.

Energy Update: Mars Retrograde, 9/9/2020

This is your big cosmic heads up that tomorrow night Mars is stationing retrograde at 28 degrees Aries - this is (one of) the last big transits of 2020 but its gonna be a doozy. Mars retrogrades last about two months so we will be feeling this through all of October and most of November as well.

Mars retrogrades are always a big deal (Mars only retrograde about every 2 years - the last retrograde was in the Summer of 2018) but it is an extra big deal because Mars “rules” the sign of Aries. We’ve been sitting in Aries Mars energy for a while now - its the go, go, GO! energy that has been frenetically pushing us all Summer long.

That said because Mars in Aries is such strong “go” energy, it has some real issues with stopping and we are already experiencing the effects of this. Before a planet stations/changes directions, it always experiencing a period of elongation where it slows down an occupies the same space/degree in the horoscope for much longer than normal. Anyone with a personal planet (Sun, Moon, Ascendant, Venus or Mars) between 23-30 degrees of the cardinal signs (Aries, Cancer, Libra, Capricorn) or 0-2 degrees of the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, Aquarius) will be feeling this strongest right now but because Mars is a personal planet, this will affect all of us to a greater or lesser degree.

So what does it feel like when Mars is retrograde? You can expect to feel low energy bordering on depression if you are prone. Also a lack of ambition/inability to get new projects off of the ground. This is not an ideal time to launch a new project or start a new relationship as things tend to fizzle out energy-wise when Mars is retrograde.

Because Mars is in Aries which is (let’s be honest) not generally known for their tact or decorum - expect some interpersonal conflict to arise. Perhaps even some full-blown adult temper tantrums. The rule of thumb with any retrograde is “pack your patience” but with Mars in retrograde, there is no patience. Be aware that many people are not going to be at their best over the next two months and try to give them the benefit of the doubt.

This retrograde cycle is going to start slow and then rev up a ton as we enter Libra season later this fall. Then, our personal planets (Mercury and Venus) plus the Sun are going to make a bunch of hard aspects to Jupiter, Saturn, and Pluto AND Mars retrograde at the very same time. It may be best to remember that things fall apart for a reason.

So what can you do to mitigate these effects? Mars in Aries needs to move - almost compulsively - it may feel hard but the more movement/exercise you can get into your day, the better off you are going to be. Also, hydrate like its 100 degrees outside - there’s not a lot of water in the planetary positions right now and the world is feeling really parched. Ground yourself if that is a part of your practice. Plus any self-care that you do to alleviate depression before it gets out of control.

But most importantly - give yourself a break. Pause and consider before you start that fight. Take a day off from the grind if you are feeling down. Mars retrogrades can be felt in our bodies so listen to yours. What does it need?

This is going to be a pretty big energy shift and you may very well feel yourself hit a proverbial wall over the next week or so. If you do, know that you are right on time and that this too shall pass.
