Last month we went abroad to Hungary, the whole trip lasted about a week. We visited all sorts of interesting locations, and a few tricky ones. Szentkirályszabadja is a ghost town located in Hungary. It was built in the 1960s as housing for Soviet soldiers. The idea for how the town was organized is based on self-sustainability, meaning that it had all elements that a community needs to survive. The Battle of Sutjeska Memorial Monument Complex in the Valley of Heroes Tjentište is a village in the municipality of Foča, Republika Srpska, Bosnia and Herzegovina. It lies entirely within Sutjeska National Park. The village was known for the war memorials commemorating the 1943 Battle of the Sutjeska (Operation Fall Schwarz); the Valley of Heroes (1971) by Miodrag Živković and the concrete Memorial House by Ranko Radović, which contains unfinished frescoes by famed Croatian artist Krsto Hegedušić. The Battle of Sutjeska Memorial Monument Complex was designed by Miodrag Živković & Ranko Radović. The materials used were poured concrete and rebar. In an interview with the creator of this monument, Miodrag Živković, in which he discusses the symbolism of this structure, he is quoted as saying: "The idea is that of breakthrough and victory, the two blocks with the figures inside represent the breaking of the circle created around the Partisan forces. The Malo Polje area of Igman is fairly close to the hotel we posted about last week, as it was a part of the same Olympic structure and complex for the Winter Olympics in 1984. The design of the ski jump was approved by FIS on 18 October 1979. Work on auxiliary infrastructure started in mid-1979, including a new road from the city to Igman.. During the Siege of Sarajevo, Igman became part of the buffer zone between the belligerents of the Bosnian government and the Army of Republika Srpska. The area around the ski jumping hill saw heavy fighting during the civil war and was also used for executions. Since then the structures have been littered with war and bullet holes, the hills were no longer useable. In 2010, the Olympic legacy company ZOI'84, which owns the hills, launched plans to renovate the venue. Estimated to cost between €7 million and €10 million, the in-runs would have been completely rebuilt, as they are in too poor condition to be renovated. Since then nothing has happened, hopefully sometime in the future. During our visit, it was completely covered in snow and from a distance it looked like a completely operational ski area. When you get closer to the structures, you can see that they are quite damaged. The people working here were great and friendly. One of the managers took us around and talked to our cameras giving a very interesting report of the times of war and what exactly happened here. Hotel „Igman“ The morning of Day 3 we visited a hotel situated on the slopes of Igman mountain. As most of the country was covered in snow we were able to capture the site in the season in which it was supposed to shine the most. Upon arrival we noticed that we haven't encountered a single soul since we started driving up the mountain. We were welcomed by overwhelming silence. Observatory "Čolina Kapa" The second day of our Bosnia trip, in the afternoon, we visited the Čolina Kapa Observatory located on Mount Trebević, overlooking Sarajevo. The whole story of this place started during WW2, as it was primarily built as a Austro-Humgarian Military fortress. The extremely good position and location offered unparalleled views of the entire city and was a key point in military observation. After the war, The Orion Astronomical Society established the Observatory and made it house state of the art technology. By 1972 it was the only facility of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the 90's, much of Sarajevo was devastated by shelling, including the observatory and the fortress. Now it stands abandoned, waiting for possible future funding and revitalization. It's really a shame that without this observatory, astronomy is practically non existent in Bosnia and Herzegovina. The next day we continued our journey around Sarajevo. We visited a lot of interesting smaller monuments, focused on filming them rather then photographing. This photo is the interior hall of Kasarna "Jajce" - a military barack built in 1914. and named after Eugen of Savoy. The name Jajce was attached in 1915. because a small hospital from the town Jajce was transfered to this building. After a short but intense trip to Bosnia we will be sharing all sorts of interesting locations we visited, photographed and filmed. The first day started off with a blast - after realizing (at the border i must add) that my driver's license expired 4 months ago, I had no option but to pay the fine and put all of the pleasures of driving through snow covered Bosnia on Vjeko - who was helping us shoot (and also drive so it seems). The first monument we visited was the "Monument to the Revolution" - a World War II memorial sculpture by the modernist sculptor Dušan Džamonja. Located at Mrakovica, one of the highest peaks of Kozara mountain, it is dedicated to the 2.500 Yugoslav partisan fighters and 68.500 mostly Serb civilians killed or deported in Ustaše concentration camps during German-Ustaše-Hungarian Kozara Offensive, from June to July 1942. The whole area is envisioned as a memorial complex consisting of the monument, a memorial wall and the museum all built in 1972. With its height of 33 m the monument, symbolically, represents liberty and is surrounded and forced by concrete columns which represent physical pressure that enemy put on the people. I was blown away by the beauty of nature while driving towards the monument. Reaching it as it unveiled from the snow and myst put a mysterious quality to the experience.
