Observatory "Čolina Kapa" The second day of our Bosnia trip, in the afternoon, we visited the Čolina Kapa Observatory located on Mount Trebević, overlooking Sarajevo. The whole story of this place started during WW2, as it was primarily built as a Austro-Humgarian Military fortress. The extremely good position and location offered unparalleled views of the entire city and was a key point in military observation. After the war, The Orion Astronomical Society established the Observatory and made it house state of the art technology. By 1972 it was the only facility of its kind in Bosnia and Herzegovina. During the 90's, much of Sarajevo was devastated by shelling, including the observatory and the fortress. Now it stands abandoned, waiting for possible future funding and revitalization. It's really a shame that without this observatory, astronomy is practically non existent in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
