My Top 10 2022 Songs!

10. Just Friends- Why Don’t We. A feel-good song that’s fun to sing along to. Had it on repeat for a while, but can’t see myself really loving it down the line. Still had to include it in my Top 10 because of how often I did listen to it.

9. High- The Chainsmokers. The first song I played on repeat this year; perfect for summer drives, but again, it’s not the type of song that I can see really sticking with me for years.

8. Chicago- Louis Tomlinson. I just discovered this song about a month ago. Was never a One Direction fan, but Louis by himself always surprises me in a good way. This gives me major throwback to 2000s heartbreak pop songs.

7. Me, Myself, and I- 5SOS. The first song I heard from the new album that I loved (the first was Complete Mess, which I wasn’t too in love with). It reminds me of Old Me from a couple years ago. Perfect song to sing along to. Perfect summer driving song.

6. 100 Degrees- Kenzie. I watched Mackenzie on Dance Moms years ago. The first song I remember from her is the one she made the music video for on the show. When I came across this, I was impressed with how more mature her music has gotten (to be fair, I forgot how much time had passed since Dance Moms). Very well-done with the lyrics, tune, and vocals.

5. Easy for You to Say-5SOS. Lovely song. Lyrics, tune, vocals are all there. Definitely one of 5SOS’s stronger songs on the album. The perfect mix of serious and pop. The ending is especially well-done. I can see myself liking this one for a while.

4. iPad- The Chainsmokers. This is one that really stuck with me. It’s the same vibe as High, but I prefer the lyrics (isn’t is strange, how we’re strangers again?). I played this a lot on car rides. It’s perfect for summer driving, or on the beach, or really anytime.

3. You Don’t Go to Parties- 5SOS. A feel-good song from 5SOS. Still am not tired of it yet and had it on repeat for about a month after the album came out. Not entirely sure why I like this one so much; the vibe is what gets me on this one. Another perfect one for car rides.

2. If You’re Serious- The Chainsmokers. My favorite song from The Chainsmokers’ album this year. I think it’s one of their more well-done and cohesive songs; I listen to this almost every time I’m driving. The vibes and lyrics are perfect on this one.

1. Bad Omens- 5SOS. There wasn’t even a debate on where to place this in my rankings. By far the best song that came out this year. Luke Hemmings’ voice is always flawless, but on this one especially the lyrics, instrumentals, and vocals are perfect. They’re telling the story of a toxic relationship and the “bad omens” are red flags. The most mature and well-crafted song I’ve heard from 5SOS since Jet Black Heart. Lots of depth. The music video was also amazingly done- chilling, but amazing. They deserve an award for this one.

One of the kids I teach gets in a lot of trouble outside of school. I have a good relationship with him, but he can be moody and would always tell me to mind my own business when I talked to him about my concerns with getting involved in stuff on the street. Today he found out he was going to a new school (I work at a disciplinary school, so kids eventually transition out to a traditional school). This kid came to say bye to me and I told him to stay out of trouble. He got emotional, gave me a hug, and said he was going to listen to me and make me proud of him. I’ve been teaching for three years so far and seeing that I actually made a difference and got through to kids I didn’t know if I was getting through to still hasn’t gotten old yet.

I work at a disciplinary school so we have kids coming in and out throughout the year depending on how long they’re assigned to the placement for. It can be anywhere from two months to the end of their senior year. Whenever a kid is ready to transition back to a traditional school, I let them pick out some candy as a congratulations gift.

Today we found out that one student was supposed to be transitioning out today. It turns out he didn’t realize it was his last day so he found out from me when I told him he could get Halloween candy early because it was his last class with me. This kid sometimes comes to me for emotional support but he also gets in a lot of trouble on the streets outside of school and he tells me to shut up and mind my business when I express concern about his actions. I didn’t think he’d be too upset about not being in my class anymore but he got really emotional and started crying. He’s usually a really energetic kid but he was quiet and sad for the rest of the day. When school let out he asked me to walk him to the bus stop because he was still upset. I felt bad because I didn’t think he was going to have that extreme of a reaction.

It really is always the toughest kids that act like they don’t want you to care who are the most upset when they leave.
