‘’ Are you here to kill me? ‘’
You haven’t turned on the lights yet, boots still on, waiting in the entryway. Silence is heavy in your apartment, but you know he is here, Alejandro, you can sense it, waiting in the dark at your expense. You are not surprised you are next, not when you know how they handle deserters, when you know too much, when they are scared you might talk. It makes your heart beat faster, especially because you know they hold Alejandro in a tight lease like a dog.
If he hears you he doesn’t answer, and so you keep moving, what else is there to do? Removing your shoes, dropping your bag. Maybe you are just tired, maybe the doormat wasn’t that crooked, maybe the fingermarks on the handle were yours, maybe-
‘’ You know I couldn’t. ‘’ Alejandro sits on your sofa, his back against the cushion, your cat purring on his lap. ‘’ Such a pretty thing like you… ‘’
It is meant as a joke, probably, but it doesn’t make you laugh, doesn’t make your insides warm up like they used to. All you feel now is cold, a deep, freezing cold that seeps inside your bones, and tense your shoulders, making bile pill up in your mouth.
‘’ Can I feed the cat? ‘’
A simple question, one that he nods to, one that he understands means you are not jumping on a hidden gun or making a b-line for the bedroom window. The cat is up as soon as he hears the pantry open, rubbing on your legs, wet nose meeting your ankles. You put more kibble in the bowl, just in case.
‘’ Wasn’t easy to find you. ‘’ He continues, ‘’ Montana is large, it was pretty hard to track. You could have moved countries. ‘’
‘’ Just to have you catch the flight log? ‘’ You move to the armchair in front of him, taking a seat, ‘’ I thought I did well, everyone makes mistakes. ‘’
You cross your legs, tucking your feet. He watches your every move, like a hawk, barely moving. Alejandro doesn’t look much different than he was a year ago, black still looks great on him, his arms are bigger, the beard slightly longer too.
Your first mistake was getting recruited by the CIA, a consultant they had told you, something up to your added value. Talent, Matt had called it later down the line, interrogation is what makes the world turn. In a way it did, they all talked, and you went home, cashed your check, just to fly back out whenever was needed. A few months later, you met Alejandro on base, near the Mexican border. You liked his eyes, how he didn’t speak much, didn’t move air, a peacefulness to his presence, weirdly.
And then one day your contract changed hands, no CIA, just Matt, and whoever held the chains. Your second mistake was to accept it, not to ask for a transfer, and join the team. You could sense the heaviness in the interrogation rooms now, notice the dangerous glint in Alejandro’s eyes. The hours would be longer, the pay better, dirtier. Sometimes, Alejandro would join you, make you leave the room halfway in, cutting the camera before closing the door behind you. Everything was more hands-on, no more slowly gnawing at it, no more psychological tactics, just raw human nature, animals in cages. Most days would end with you screaming at Matt that you would quit, that this wasn’t what you had signed up for. Oh, but it is, sweetheart, do you know what happens to you if you break this contract?
Threats, every day, all of it, but you couldn’t allow yourself to find out, not after Kate, not when you had heard words here and there of what had happened. You had gotten to know Alejandro better pretty quickly after that. Maybe you had eventually gained his respect by being so out of bounds every time.
Between the long hours, the endless plane rides, inevitably running into him at the motel bar, even when you thought there was no way something would come out of it, you kept finding him around every corner. And then you kissed him one night, or maybe he did, one drink too much, pressing on you, bringing you up against the bed. Your third mistake. It felt different to be able to touch him, how he would accept it, initiate it even. A breath of fresh air compared to those stuffy interrogation rooms.
You found comfort in Alejandro’s arms, in the dark of night, letting him wrap around you, letting the sound of his breathing ease the voices in your head, letting him trace figures on your back with his fingers until you would fall asleep.
No one knew, no one suspected a thing, and you liked it better that way, as you are sure he did too. Matt wasn’t blind, though, you could see the crease between his brows when you would get on the plane together, how he had started to comment on your outfits, your hair. You could tell he was going fishing, throwing the bait, waiting to see if the wolf would bite. Still, he was always your colleague first, a good one, never late, easy to work with, and then he was something else. Something you couldn’t name, something you couldn’t exactly pinpoint, not lovers, not friends.
Then one day you cracked, like an egg, somewhere in the middle, slicing you in half. A long time coming. I can’t do this anymore, you had told Alejandro, sobbing, huddling in the tub, under the water. You could feel the water in your lungs, the tightness of your chest, in your throat. I can’t breathe, I can’t, I- You don’t remember him turning off the water, gently pulling you out, but you remember him wrapping the towel around you, hugging you to warm you up, brushing your wet hair with his fingertips, rubbing the water of your back. You can, of course you can.
You remember telling him you were done, that when Matt would receive your resignation letter tomorrow you would be long gone. You owed him that, the truth, the why, before leaving and never seeing him again. You couldn’t bear the thought of him wondering, the pain it could cause of losing someone again. Don’t do this, you know what they think when people leave, what they will do.
What they will make me do, he meant, and here he is.
You let yourself sink into the pillows, feel the tightness in your throat, let your shoulders drop. Now that you are closer, you notice more grey in his hair, a sign that time hasn’t stopped for him either.
‘’ Now what? ‘’ You breathe. The air is thick, the room dark. What will you do now?
‘’ I’m not here for you. ‘’ His eyes soften, and he readjusts himself in his seat. ‘’ I killed Alarcón. I’m here because I’m done, it’s over. ‘’
I’m not here for you. I killed Alarcón. It is just Alejandro in your living room, plain, simple, soft Alejandro, no wolf, no sharp teeth, waiting to pounce. Him, here, after that, you think maybe he wants to talk about it. A shoulder to rest on, after all the stress from those years, the hard work, repressing everything down.
‘’ How do you feel? ‘’
‘’ I don’t know ‘’ His dark eyes are back on you. ‘’ Relieved, I guess. ‘’
You are still not over the fact that he is not here to kill you, only looking for comfort, friendship. Your fingers are still tightly wrapped around the armrest, and the fabric bristles as you let go.
‘’ You want a beer? ‘’ A peace offering.
‘’ Hmm. ‘’
You can tell Alejandro is somewhere far away now, deep in thought, going back to caress the cat as it snuggles back into him. He must be there, you think, where Alarcón was that day, he probably feels the gun in his hand, hears the bullets hit the ground. You know the way he remembers those things so clearly as if he was hovering, watching. He had told you so one night on the jet, when Matt was fast asleep on the couch, when you were seated across from him, when you had asked him if he had dreams too, as vivid, as bloodied. I don’t, he had said, and then motioning to his temple with a finger, but it’s in here, I’m always there.
You are alone in the kitchen for a minute and then you aren’t, turning around, knocking into him who is now in front of you, with so little space to spare. Alejandro takes the beer from your hand, gently discarding it on the countertop. You let his eyes run over your face, let him observe for whatever he is looking for. He opens his mouth and then closes it, swallowing words that he decides are not meant to be said.
‘’ I came here because I’m not sure what to do now. ‘’
After all of it, he means, now that his goal is achieved, that debts are paid and revenge is cold and done.
‘’ You’ll figure it out, you always do. ‘’
You don’t flinch when his palm reaches up, his thumb brushing against your cheek as he cups his hand around your face, cradling your jaw between his fingers. You let his fingers warm up your skin, letting the familiarity of it submerge you.
‘’ I meant it, ‘’ he whispers, ‘’ so pretty… ‘’
‘’ I think you need sleep. ‘’ You caution back. It feels overwhelming, having him here, so close, after so many months.
‘’ I guess. ‘’
He trails off, but he is not listening, there is a hunger in his eyes, and you remember all the nights he would look at you like this, soft, tender, something you could mistake for affection. The tip of his fingers caresses your hair, running down the side of your neck, feeling your pulse underneath his touch. He knocks out of it after a few seconds, letting his hand rest on your shoulder instead.
There is a seriousness in his eyes, an int of doubt, something different.
‘’ I know what I need. I’m going to Bogotá, and I want you to come with me. ‘’
I need you to, he means, you’ll be safe with me. You feel as if the wind has been knocked out of you, the blood pumping in between your ears is loud and heavy, you can’t hear yourself think.
I can’t, I-
You can, of course you can.

Serve, love & protect
Bodyguard!Gilbert 'Gilly' Lopez x reader, the usual for the show, 1584 words
a/n : bodyguard au cause we love them tropes
Tagging my Gilly people @narcolini @drabbles-mc <3
Tumblr media
‘’ You lied to me. ‘’
‘’ I did. ‘’
‘’ Are you even dating me or is this all a big joke too? ‘’
He sighs, and suddenly the big SUV feels too small for the both of them. The cracked glass across the windshield makes it hard to see, the busted window in the back letting the wind whistle between his ears.
‘’ I… ‘’
His tongue rolls in his mouth, he doesn’t know what to say. On one side, he shouldn’t tell you, admit that he likes you, not when your dad had been clear about that in the contract. All means necessary, don’t fall in love. On the other, how couldn’t he, when you had been so kind, so charming since the beginning, why wouldn’t he want to date you?
‘’ Don’t. ‘’ You answer back, sinking into your seat. ‘’ I don’t want to know. ‘’
He had done lots of business with your dad before, a strong man with piercing eyes, sharp suits. That is where the offer came from, between gun trades and small talk. Got a babysitting job for you, Gilly, easy work, easy cash. More like a bodyguard job, a dumbass bodyguard job with actual danger, guns and wounds. Your dad had told him you wouldn’t be easily convinced, that to ensure your safety he would have to be less traditional, less leather and handgun, more friend, even closer if needed. And he did, even if he knew it wasn’t part of the plan, letting you run your fingers through his beard, sharing the same side of the bed, he just couldn’t say no.
‘’ Listen, baby, I- ‘’
‘’ Don’t- oh my god, Gilly what the fuck is wrong with you?! ‘’
Your hands are tight, gripping the door handle as he takes a sharp left. You turn to face him.
‘’ Stop it, it’s over! Don’t ‘baby’ me, don’t… ‘’ you gesticulate around, hands flying, ‘’ Just stop. ‘’
You raise your palms to your eyes, pressing, muttering things he can’t understand. He can sense your distress, he knows you now, better than anyone, more than your father would like him to probably. It has been months since you two had been together now, good months, the best ones for him this year. It was an easy job at first too, simply because you never were a primary target, just one that they would try to hit if deals went wrong. Being the child of a gun lord usually came with a fair share of barrels pointing back, and, from what he had seen from you when bullets eventually started flying, staying low and away from the windows, this whole routine was old news to you.
‘’ Please don’t be mad, I can explain. ‘’ He tries again.
You scoff, and he watches as you squint your eyes at him. It makes him feel small in his seat.
‘’ I don’t think you can, Gilly. Save your breath. ‘’
The car is colder now that the sun has gone down and he watches the wind wrap around your hair, lets the breeze bring goosebumps to his arms. He knows the two of you are too exposed, in this beat-up car, bullet holes on each side. It pains him that he knows the only place you will truly be safe is at your dad’s house, and he has to bring you there, not the club, not his house, not anywhere else. Drop you off, collect his hazard pay and leave. Leave you and hope you will answer his texts, even if he something tells him you probably won't.
He takes a left turn, fast, into a poorly lit backstreet, almost propelling you against your window side. The breaks get pressed just as fast, and you have to brace yourself with your hands on the dash.
‘’ Have you gone mad?! Did they hit you on the head or something?! ‘’
Gilly turns off the car and pivotes to you, bringing his arm up to wrap the back of your seat, caging you in.
‘’ I can explain. ‘’ Let me, please.
He is observing you, the frown between your brows, the anger in your eyes, the dried blood on the side of your face. It is superficial, really, barely a scratch, but he has to hold himself back from reaching out, move your chin to the side so he can get a better look. He breathes your name as the overhead lights dim out, leaving the two of you in the dark, pleading. He can smell your perfume, hear the shakiness in your breath.
‘’ Okay, whatever. ‘’
You cross your arms around your chest. Even in the darkness, he knows you are watching him, waiting.
‘’ I like you, I do. ‘’ He starts, ‘’ I wasn’t supposed to, though, we just needed to be friends, you know? So I could make sure you were safe. ‘’ But I failed.
‘’ My dad hired you. ‘’
‘’ He did. ‘’
Your shadow moves, moving to the side to lay your head on the headrest. Your voice is soft, going through the motions, exhausted. You must be tired, the rest of the adrenaline dripping out of you in waves.
‘’ Do you work for him, selling the guns and stuff? ‘’
‘’ More like with him, I’m in a motorcycle club. ‘’
We buy them, he could have said, sell some back if they ever come across a nice shipment from god knows where, but he doesn’t. You are smart, you get it.
‘’ You’re used to getting shot a lot. ‘’ It is not a question, more like a fact, piecing the information together.
‘’ You could say that. ‘’
He holds his free hand out, and you take it, his warm fingers taking in your cold ones. He can tell you have softened up, put down the axe.
‘’ You really like me? ‘’
‘’ I do, very much. ‘’
You squeeze his hand, gently, even though he can’t see, he knows you are pursing your lips, biting the inside of your cheek. You move gently, twisting between your seat and the cup holder, leaning down and pressing your cheek on his shoulder. He can feel your body relax into his.
‘’ Can we go home now? I want a hot shower. ‘’
‘’ I know you do, baby, we’ll be there soon. ‘’
He lets you nuzzle into in shirt, caressing your hair with his free hand. He starts the car, driving back up to the main street. He doesn’t have the guts to tell you you are going home alone tonight, that there is no way in hell your dad will let you sleep somewhere else.
To his surprise, you don’t put much of a fight when you notice the gates around your dad’s house, or when he says your name into the intercom so you can be let in, but you are a smart one, of course, you picked it up. The nuances, the conflict inside of him, how he couldn’t get out of the car at first, couldn’t let go of your arm when people started pouring out the house. I’m good, Gilly, you whispered to him, thank you. And so he listens, he lets go, picks up his cash and leaves.
.
A week passes, a long one, of mindless thinking, passing time, putting cars on the lift and then bringing them down. He hears about you at Templo one morning, barely a sentence, something about your dad catching the guys, how business between him and the Mayans has been booming since then. Thanks, Gilly. Good job, man. The military training finally paying off, uh? He nods and smiles, but he doesn’t ask about you. He tries to play it low, make it seem like he is not taking the biggest hit of his life.
When he gets home that afternoon, something is different, maybe it is the way the grass is bent where it usually isn’t, how the doormat is slightly crooked, but it is you sitting at the diner table that makes him stop in his tracks.
His hand is still on the gun at the back of his waist, his other tight on the door handle when you wave at him, a small smile on your lips. Your hair is slightly shorter, different, and you are wearing too many layers for the California heat. You speak first.
‘’ Hey, baby… ‘’
Gilly lets go of the handle at his back and closes the door behind him. Baby. Baby. You stand up before he can talk back, nervously taking a few steps towards him.
‘’ We were on lockdown, I couldn’t call, I couldn’t leave. ‘’ Your fingers are pulling at threads on your jeans pocket. ‘’ I’m sorry, Gilly. ‘’
He melts, there is nothing else he can do. His arms find their way naturally around you, one hand on your head, pushing your cheek against his chest. He knows you can feel his heart beating in your ear, hear the relief that comes out of him with a sigh. There is no hesitation when you hug back, warm fingers griping at his cut.
‘’ I will never lie again, I swear. ‘’
You laugh, and it makes him squeeze tighter.
‘’ It’s alright, only for good reasons from now on, okay? ‘’
Okay, he will. Protecting you will be a full-time job now, maybe not the small contract he thought he was going into, something different, something warm and meaningful—soft, loved.
The most pleasant job in the world.

Pablo had introduced you years ago, back at the beginning, when everything was still calm and smooth sailing. A sweet thing, his mom had told him, trustful, single too. He had brushed it off, of course, ma, he would say, stop it, it’s not like this, but it was. It was the small talk he had to have with you every time he came to the shop your dad owned, how he used to walk the streets after school hours, hoping to run into you.
It was Pablo who told him to let go, to find someone else, when everything became unsure and the storm came knocking on their door. He had brushed it off, hoping that you would understand, wishing it would stop at once, so you could ease into it like he had. Gustavo was blind to think it would happen, that it would calm down, that his brother would even think to slow down.
This is not right, Gustavo, you would tell him, people are dying, is this really what you want? He couldn’t care less, he wanted to say, that it is not his problem, nor yours, that they are killing each other, that he has nothing to do with it, that they-
He knew it was Pablo who told your dad, about how you still had been seeing him in secret, jumping the balcony at night, getting picked up by a car a block over. It made him red with anger, the feeling of betrayal in his chest, loneliness, despair. My dad knows, Gus. I’m grounded, he says he’ll put bars on the window if he has to. Gustavo is not stupid, he knows why your parents are scared, why his brother hates that he still sees you even though he tells him how dangerous it is. One day they will call the cops on you, is this what you want, hm?
Of course, it is not what he wants, especially when he watches you cry like this, unstoppable, hiccups and tears staining your face, but he has to. For you, he tells you, it is all for you. For your safety, for your life, so that you don’t cry for him if he dies. Gustavo has to stay tall and strong as he holds your hands, as he wipes the salted water off your cheeks, pretend he will not drink his pain away later that night, that he will not resent his brother for months, years. He is the one to leave first, one last squeeze of your hands and he lets go and turns away, he doesn't look, simply because he knows how weak he is, how he would run back to you in a heartbeat.
Pablo introduced you years ago, back in the beginning, back when Gustavo didn’t resent everyone, when he wasn’t so angry and so reckless all the time. For once, he thinks it might settle, the longing, the heartache, when he meets Marina. She is nice, yes, but never as nice, never as soft, too extravagant, too used to this. How their relationship has to be kept secret makes his mouth taste like acid, makes him remember how long he did it with you, how he hated it, how he regrets it.
One day, Gustavo leaves in the morning, as early as he can, as early as they allow him to. It’s for business, he tells everyone, even if it isn’t, even if he knows how risky this is, but he has to, he will, even if it is the last thing he does.
Gustavo had met you years ago, back at the beginning, a small party at your parent’s house, not too far from the one you own now, further down the street. The sun beats down on his hat as he stands in the driveway, he is hot and cold, hands moist as he walks up the stairs and wraps his fingers around the knocker. It might be selfish, he thinks, thought about it the whole flight over, but he can’t think of anything that would fix it. The hole in his heart, the solitude. He remembers what you had worn that first night, cotton soft, all white. He remembers your smile, his brother tugging him along. I’m Gustavo, he had said, mucho gusto. And so he knocks, one time, two times.
Igualmente, Gustavo.

‘’ Stay still, I don't want to hurt you. ‘’
Any more than he already has. Still, it hurts when Alejandro puts his hand on your stomach, hard and warm against your abdomen. The bullet grazed you, thankfully, but deep and bloody, straight in between the Kevlar, slicing through your shirt. You can’t help but jerk when he presses his fingers into your skin, teeth baring in a hiss. It is dusk now, the sun dipping below the horizon, painting the scene orange and red. How long has it been since he left you in this ditch? Why did he even bother to come back?
‘’ You fucking shot me. ‘’
It comes out of you in a cough, as if you can’t believe it yourself. You are probably in shock, you realize, cold and losing blood for what seems like hours at this point. Where is my gun? You taste the blood in your mouth as you speak again. Where am I?
‘’ You fucking shot me. ‘’
You struggle against his hold, opposite hand grabbing his wrist in an attempt to get free. Let me go, you want to tell him, let me be, but it feels like paste in your mouth, dried tongue, you can’t get the words out.
‘’ Stay still. ‘’ He pushes back, and you can do nothing but let him, ‘’ They would have shot you anyway, your cover is blown. ‘’
‘’ Yeah, no shit. ‘’
Every word feels like sandpaper in your throat, scratching on its way out, keeping you from saying more mean and distasteful things. You let yourself fall back against the sand, letting the dust settle again in your lungs. Matt had told you they had caught rumours of your CIA affiliation through the low ranks, but you still went anyway, believing you could work your way through it. Pinches narcos de mierda. Alejandro fetches gauze out of his backpack, pulling you closer to cut the strap of your bulletproof vest with his knife. You feel blood moving down your chin.
‘’ If you heard what they were telling me they would do to you before you got there maybe you wouldn’t be so feisty about this. ‘’
‘’ You threw me in a ditch. ‘’
‘’ And they think you’re dead, you’re welcome. ‘’
He gently wipes the blood off your chin with his glove before turning his attention back to your shirt. It tugs on your skin as it separates from the dried blood, raw, stiff, a new colour from what it was this morning. You let Alejandro turn you to your side, inspecting the wound he inflicted, tucking your face in his elbow as he presses the tissue on your wound.
‘’ You’ve lost a lot of blood, but it’s not that deep, you’ll be fine. ‘’
‘’ I’m surprised they don’t think you’re CIA now- ‘’
You hiss when he starts moving the tape around your torso, pulling it tighter every time he starts another round.
‘’ I guess shooting you was a good move, they don’t suspect a thing. ‘’
Idiots, you want to say, all of them. You remember them dragging your body in the back of a car, carelessly tossed across the seat next to Alejandro, you remember how easy it was to play dead, how cold you were, how the pain made your whole body numb, Alejandro’s hand on your vest to keep you from rolling over as they drove in circles for hours.
‘’ It’s a fucking miracle. ‘’
That he isn’t dead, that you aren’t, that no one caught your whimpers after every bump or Alejandro softly shushing you afterwards. A fucking miracle.
‘’ You tell me. ‘’
He issues no warning as he pulls you up, knees bending, one hand on your shoulder, the other creasing your shirt in a tight grip. His movements are tactical, precise, moving your body in a way that works for him when your whole being can’t seem to follow. Alejandro wraps his hand around your neck as it swings back. You can feel the blood rushes back to your head, feel it in your throat. Hey, he says, stay with me, but the words barely make it to you, everything is thick and foggy and-
Hey, don’t die on me now. The world comes back in a buzz, loud and crackling in between your ears. ‘’ Matt will have my head if you die like this, you hear me? ‘’
His fingers are warm around your scalp, pressing a little, to make sure you really are here, back with him. You notice his eyes for the first time, how brown they are, deep, honeyed, the slight wrinkles that shape between his eyebrows when he frowns.
‘’ Loud and clear. ‘’ You mumble as he steadies you once again.
‘’ Good. ‘’ Good. You can see the relief cross his face, the weight that leaves his shoulder. ‘’ Think you can walk? ‘’
‘’ I don’t know, you tell me. I didn’t shoot myself, did I? ‘’
He scoffs, dismissing your sarcasm, you could mistake it for a laugh, ‘’ I missed for a reason. Let’s get you home, yeah? ‘’
Alejandro doesn’t pick up on your answer, something along the lines of it being a waste of time, that you are cold already, weak. Cállate, he wants to tell you, Cállate, you can do this, let me. He wants to try, for you, for him. And he does, he drags you through the desert, hiding in the streets, makes sure you press ‘right there, hard’ whenever he changes your bandages. His hands slip and hurt, but he does, he has to.
Told you so, he wants to say when he finally sees the bright lights, but he doesn’t. The second he makes it to camp, he brings you to the infirmary first, before Matt, before the men at the gates can ask any questions or take into account the blood that stains both of you. Told you so, but he keeps his mouth shut and tries to forget the way his finger hesitated on the trigger this morning, even when he knew it had to be done, that he hates how relieved he felt when he realized you were still alive.
He hates it, but it is true, it seems pretty clear to him now why he even bothered to come back.
Told you so.

He’s home before you are, though you never gave him a key. The lady downstairs is kind and stupid enough to let anyone into the foyer, as long as they ask politely, and you’re kind and stupid enough to have told him exactly how the lock jimmies open, if you get it just right. So here he is now, un-expectantly expectant of you.
‘I should look into getting an alarm system,’ you say, shutting the door behind, and pouring the day from your shoulders to your feet.
‘Maybe.’
‘Are you here for long?
He shrugs. ‘Maybe. I don’t know.’
You pause where you are and look at him. He’s leaning against the table, which stands against the cabinet by the bed, because you’re yet to buy any dining chairs, and he’s yet to find a way to be comfortable here, as often as he comes, which makes you both look like strangers, really. Neither of you have settled. It’s more of an introduction on neutral ground than anything else.
He’s got his arms crossed. Bare forearms, rolled sleeves. He looks from you, to the floor, to the half-drawn curtain over your window. Nobody’s bothered to turn the overhead light on, so he’s orange, and you’re blue.
‘Bad day?’ you ask.
‘No worse than the rest.’
You try a smile, pull that card from your deck. ‘Something a whiskey might solve?’
‘Look.’ He sighs and draws his gaze back to you. ‘We should talk.’
The lamp on the bedside flickers. He waits until the amber glow is steady again, and then he nods, like you’ve asked something, and his brows pull together like he’s apologising for it.
‘Can I take my shoes off first?’
‘It won’t—’
‘Please.’
You get another nod, and a raised hand to wave you on, before it’s tucked back under his forearm again. Crossed and waiting.
The lace of your boot has become knotted, so it takes a pregnant minute for you to get it off, leather fighting the curve of your heel, then it drops to the ground with a thud.
The second comes off easy and quiet.
‘You want a drink?’ you ask, sock-footed and able to move again. You cross the room before the offer’s been answered, hand on the fridge before drink has even tilted up into a question.
‘It won’t take,’ he tries again, ‘I shouldn’t stay.’
‘That’s what you say every time.’
‘This is different.’
You take two beers from the case on the shelf. White light there and gone again.
‘You’re different?’ you guess.
He lets the quiet have its turn before answering. ‘I’ve been thinking.’
‘Yeah, I noticed last time.’ You could tell he wanted to talk then, too, but he’d been too scared, or too happy, or too greedy, to want to tell you so. ‘You don’t fuck the same when you’re thinking about something.’
There’s a laugh that you reward with one of the beers, handing it to him as you reach his side of the studio.
‘And you’re just telling me this now?’ he says.
‘I could hardly tell you then.’
He snorts and you match it, smiling, before dropping onto the side of the bed. From here his cheek is gold, his hair is gold, and the rest of him is grey, muted by the moonlight through what’s left of the window.
‘Please sit,’ you say, and when he doesn’t move you add, ‘it won’t hurt less from the table.’
‘I was trying to give you space,’ he admits, standing as he does. Arms slack, knees straight. He walks two steps then dips the bed as he goes down beside you, shoulder to shoulder.
You switch the lamp off. No more orange, just blue.
He starts before you’ve even tasted the beer, which sits damp between your palms.
‘I don’t think,’ he says, ‘we can keep doing-’
‘Wait.’
‘-this.’ His eyebrows trick his eyes into looking soft. Or tired. 'Baby,’ he reasons.
‘You’ll have to give that up,’ you reply. ‘Baby.’
You imagine his palm on your thigh and his thumb running the outer seam. Replace it directly with the sight of his fingers now, threaded together, and balanced in the gap between his knees.
‘In the morning,’ you offer him. ‘Let’s save it for then, okay?’
He exhales and looks away before the last of it can hit your face. ‘It wouldn’t be fair.’
‘To who?’ You’re smiling somehow. ‘I’m the one suggesting it.’
‘We can’t just keep on—’
‘Don’t say it,’ you interrupt again, because you know already. ‘Don’t tell me until the morning, Javi.’
‘How is that any better?’ he asks. ‘For either of us?’
‘How is it any worse?’
You’re both orange, and you’re both blue, and you’ve known the colour of him since the beginning, really. Since you first told him how to get the lock just right. There’s nothing here that you hadn’t seen coming, and nothing left to say, either.
‘One more night?’ you ask, for a final hopeless time. ‘Don’t tell me now.’
You watch his throat as he swallows the request, his lips as he nods in reply. ‘Alright,’ he says, ‘until the morning.’
And then there’s his hand. There’s your thigh.

‘’ God damn it, woman. ‘’
You knew that would come, but you didn’t expect it to be the second you stepped out of the car. You thought you could have sneaked your way past the garage, past Gil and straight into the clubhouse, hoping EZ would be there, but turns out that all the bombs, the gunshots and even the missing muffler on his truck weren’t enough to damage his hearing. You couldn’t figure out why his ears weren’t ringing when yours were almost all the time now. You can hear him mumbling as he walks your way.
‘’ I told you to stay put. That I would take care of this. ‘’
You can tell he is angry, and as much as you would like to pretend not to hear him, and walk away, you can’t. You close the door, and when you turn around, he is in front of you, tall and shoulders pushed back. He looks good in his uniform, a dark grey jumpsuit that he is wearing with the sleeves tied to his hips. You can tell he has stained his tank top again, despite the dark colour and telling him he needed to stock up on Oxiclean.
‘’ Hi, baby, I missed you, baby? ‘’
He ignores your attempt to smooth this out, arm moving behind your left side to pull the door of the truck open, the metal door missing your hip by an inch. Deciding to borrow his pick-up truck might have been pushing your luck too, but there is nothing he can do about it now. He points to the driver’s seat.
‘’ You’re going to sit your ass back down, and you’re going to go home, baby. ‘’
‘’ I’m not. ‘’
‘’ You- ‘’
He bites his tongue, you can tell, see it roll in his mouth. You like to rile him up, of course you do, especially because he falls for it each time. He better gear up today, because you are determined. You will talk to Alvarez, or maybe EZ, whichever is here, whichever would listen to what you have to say. Gil takes a deep breath as he takes a step forward, chest pressing into yours, silently and slowly trying to push you back into the car. When don’t move, sneakers pressing into the gravel, he talks again.
‘’ You are unbelievable. I’ve got two cars on the lifts, I don’t have time for this- ‘’
‘’ Yo, Gilly, gotta stop bailing on me like that, man. ‘’
Coco walks out of the garage, cigarette between his lips, hat pushed back. His hair has grown longer since the last time you saw him, just past his shoulders. He smiles when he sees you.
‘’ Sup, girl. How you been? ‘’
He doesn’t seem to notice the tension in both your bodies, a position that could easily be mistaken for some welcoming hug. A weird one, really, one where you are pushing back against a human wall, one where Gil could force you inside if he decided to do it. His knuckles are white from gripping the door, he knows he can’t just shoo you away anymore, that the boys will want to talk to you, ask you how you’ve been doing, if they fixed the leaking sink alright.
‘’ Been good, Coco, thank you. How bout you? ‘’
‘’ Same ol’ shit, mama. Are you here only for the big man or you came for us losers too? ‘’
You snort at that, using the momentum to slither past Gil, letting him close the door in defeat behind you. You hear him grunt something in return, but you don’t give him the attention of turning around. Coco crush the rest of his cigarette under his foot, he is smiling again, clearly happy with the joke he just made.
‘’ I came for Ava, but Gil told me she left this morning, so I bullied the big man into buying me a beer before his lunch break instead. ‘’
A straight-up lie, and Gil has to know you are lying, you are convinced it is written on your forehead. Big letters, bold and coloured. Coco doesn’t seem to notice it, though, doesn’t even move over the fact that Ava wasn’t even here this morning, as he lights another cigarette. You like Coco, you find him funny, smart, kind, and you realize you hate lying to him. It is probably because he took care of the body that night, telling you that he would take care of it. Maybe you feel guilty that it has come to light, guilty about how he might feel about it when the truth comes out.
‘’ Go spend his money, girl. He has to be back in an hour though. ‘’
‘’ Duly noted, chief. ‘’
He smiles at that, hand clasping on your shoulder in goodbye before walking back to the garage. You can feel Gil’s presence behind you, all warmth and anger. You don’t like giving him the cold shoulder, but you know you have to rip the bandage off, figure this whole thing out and find a solution before it is too late. You still wish it could be wrong, that Marco’s information is wrong, that they did find a body, just not that body. What a weird fucking day already. You and Jacob's endless hunt for his lost homework right before having to leave for school, coffee spilling on your jeans on the way to the club, using the silent treatment on your man and confessing to a murder in front of illegal bikers.
You look at him over your shoulder only to find out he is already looking down at you. Don’t do it, it means, but you know you have to.
‘’ I’m gonna go in there, ‘’ you begin, ‘’ and I’m going to sit at the table and tell Alvarez everything. I want you to do it with me. ‘’
His gaze breaks away from yours, meeting a point far away in the distance. You know you are pushing him into something he wanted to wait for, but you can’t spend another sleepless night over this. Not when you woke up every hour or so, walking to the door to make sure it is locked, hand reaching in your nightstand to feel the cool metal of the gun that is tucked in there.
He motions for you to walk, chin pointing to the door, towards the clubhouse. You let out a breath you didn’t know you were holding, relieved.
‘’ You got my back on this? ‘’ you ask.
‘’ Always. ‘’
The clubhouse still smells of old wood and liquor, just like you remember it. You have been here before, seated at the bar with Gil, tagging along to celebrate whoever’s birthday or whatever event needed tequila shots and cigars. It always felt cozy, in your opinion, mostly because it belonged to them, every piece of it, every memorabilia and every bullet hole that splintered the walls. You understand why Gil loves this place every time you push the doors, why it reminds him of the army, the nostalgia of it.
You are greeted as soon as you come in, hello’s from behind the bar, the pool table. You had felt confident on the way here, fingers gripped tightly on the wheel, telling Gil you would get in there with or without him, but whatever is twisting your insides now feels like nervousness, impatient to get this over with. You feel Gil’s hand on your back, showing you forward, past the doorstep. His fingers are warm on your back, heavy, brushing the skin peaking between your shorts and your shirt.
‘’ Do you think it would be better if you took the lead from here? ‘’ you ask him.
You know it would make him feel good to be in control, to be able to take the reigns on this one. He squeezes the side of your hip in response, his warmth leaving as soon as it arrived as he moves around you and towards the hallway to your right, the one you know leads to Templo, disappearing from your sight. You usually wouldn’t ask for help, you would deal with it on your own, swallow the anxiety, the nerves and jump in, but asking for help is something you have done more than usual the past few months. You always wait for it to come back and bite you, reminding you of why you stopped doing it in the first place, but it hasn’t, not yet.
‘’ Can I get you anything to drink, sweetheart? ‘’
Cielo catches your eyes behind the bar, torso leaning over the counter, wiping away any spilled liquid. You smile, and you hope she doesn’t notice that it is forced, that your fists are closed so tight you think your nails might break the skin.
‘’ I’m all good, thanks. Just waiting for Gilly. ‘’
Gilly. It still feels weird to say it like they do. It has always been Gil, ranger, or any insults that fitted the need at the time. He never took any of it personally, of course, but he was always quick to answer something witty in response. Another minute passes, and he is back in front of you just as fast as he had left, one hand sliding in yours, prying open your tensed fingers.
‘’ Come with me. ‘’
And you do, following him into the hallway, posters and license plates decorating the walls. The air is heavy, and the more your steps bring you toward the doorway, the more you can feel your heart in your throat. Your hand hasn’t left Gil’s, fingers wrapped so hard around his tattooed ones he might think you are scared he would let go. Deep breath in, deep breath out. You let him pull you further in, almost bumping into his back when he stops in front of a woven basket, reaching into his back pocket to drop his phone into it.
‘’ You got your cell? ‘’
You nod, rapidly reaching into your pocket to place your phone next to his.
‘’ Good, ‘’ he swallows, ‘’ You got your gun? ‘’
‘’ I don’t? Look, Gil, if I’m making anyone uncomfortable, I can just… ‘’
You can just what? Go home? Actually get your gun and wait for the wave to come crashing? You watch him adjust the sunglasses on top of his head.
‘’ This is just protocol, you’re good, Alvarez said he would listen to what we had to say. I told him that Marco came by the house. He had already heard something about a missing brother. ‘’
Just as he finishes, he takes a step closer to you, coming back into your personal space. You didn’t expect him to kiss you, warm lips against yours, with his hand under your chin. It makes your body shiver despite the heat, toes curling and craving for more. When he pulls away, he is smiling. You are not sure why, looking at the circumstances, but God, God, maybe you do love him for real, maybe it isn’t in your head or it is routine from being around too long, maybe-
‘’ Hey. Everything is going to be fine, take a deep breath. ‘’
And you do, because he tells you to, because his hand is warm behind your ear. You nod, I’m good, you want to tell him, let’s do this. You know he reads you like an open book, hand squeezing the back of your neck in encouragement before he turns to face the stained glass door.
The air seems thicker inside the Templo, barely any light, dark leather chairs, and cigarette smoke filling the air. Alvarez sits at the end of the table, watching as Gil sends you toward one side of the table while he goes for the other. You take a seat in front of your man, El Padrino on your right. You had met Marcus two times before, the first time when you had met everyone else for Angel’s birthday at the clubhouse, the other after you had stumbled upon his wife in the grocery store, a sweet woman was quick to invite Gil and you for a barbecue at their house.
The third time is today, just as you are about to tell him the truth, what you have been bottling up for weeks now, the blood that still stains your nails. Nothing Marcus hasn’t done before, you can easily guess. It feels weird the more you think about it, how your lives are similar in many ways, but different in so many others. It is Gil that breaks the silence, forearms leaning on the table. His eyes meet yours for a brief second. Behave.
‘’ Thank you, Padrino, for meeting with us. ‘’
Marcus acknowledges him with a grunt, a brief nod. If Gil notices the astonishment that paints your face he doesn’t let it show. Whatever boot-licking, democratic bullshit this is, you are already over it, but you let him speak, mostly because you told him you would. It is rarely his thing to lay low, lick boots and follow the rules, maybe the two of you have just gotten too old for it. But Alvarez doesn’t answer him, he turns to you instead, Gil discarded as quickly as he had started.
‘’ So, this has to do with the missing brother they found in the state park? ‘’
‘’ Maybe? I mean- I don’t know if that’s where they buried him. ‘’
‘’ They? ‘’
Marcus is intimidating, unreadable, pulling on his smoke every once in a while. He seems unbothered, and that makes you nervous. You don’t know how much you should tell him or how much Gil planned to tell him. You wouldn’t want to put any of them under fire of any kind, especially when they did all of this out of the kindness of their heart. You could have been anyone that night, but they helped anyway. Your eyes flicker to Gil, his hands are crossed in front of him and he is looking at you, fingers twitching for a smoke. You wish you could tell him to have one, that you'll allow it this time, that he doesn’t have to hide them in the inside pocket of his uniform. He motions to you to keep going as he eventually pulls one out.
‘’ Coco and Creeper. I needed the help and Gil called them. ‘’
Marcus hums, crushing the end of his cigar against the ashtray. ‘’ And help with what? ‘’
He is pulling it out of you, question by question. This feels like an interrogation, and in a way it is, nothing you haven’t done before, nothing you haven’t gone through before. It tingles inside of you, the adrenaline that pumps in your veins just at the mere thought of it. You try to remind yourself that this is a safe place, that you are home, but still, your arms feel heavy, neck muscles tensing. You try to swallow it down, readjusting in your chair. If Marcus wants the truth, the whole story, you’ll give it to him.
‘’ A dead body, the one I murdered. ‘’
You can see the twitch in his eyebrows, the surprise hidden deep behind his brown eyes. He didn’t expect you to tell that fast you bet, but that means he has been underestimating you so far.
‘’ I was doing mercs jobs in Fresno for a few months, that’s where I met him- ‘’
‘’ What the fuck? ‘’
The cold that drips from his words is like an ice bucket in your face. You had almost forgotten that Gil was there, silently watching from his side of the table. As you look at him, you can see the anger in his eyes, the shock moving across his face. Wait.
‘’ I thought you knew? I left Santo Padre for a job, I told Rea about it. ‘’
‘’ And you thought she would tell me? Snitch on you while you were back on this bullshit? You told me you would stop. ‘’
You don’t have an answer to give him, because you did tell him you would try, but that was a year ago, when life had started to feel good again, until it wasn’t, until you felt that need to run again. They are using you, he used to say, they don’t fucking care if you come back alive. He was right, but what he didn’t understand was that you didn’t care either if you did or not. Bills needed to be paid, dark thoughts and memories more easily buried under the clicking sound of ammunition and the smell of gunpowder. Gil is leaning across the table, chair pulled back a few inches, and if you didn’t know him, you would think he was ready to jump, hands on throat.
You don’t have an answer to give him, but you still open your mouth, hoping to find something to say. Marcus cuts you before you can.
‘’ And then what? ‘’
He is looking at Gil, and you figure he is telling him to back off, to calm down. Surprisingly he does, pressing back into his chair, huffing. You close your fists under the table, hoping the pain will bring you back into the room with them.
‘’  Then he was an abusive bitch, and he tried to kill me, so I did him first. ‘’
You can still hear the thumping in your ears, feel the split skin of your knuckles as you continue.
‘’ I didn’t know he was SAMCRO. I’m here so we can find a solution. ‘’
You finally meet Gil’s eyes across the table. He feels so far away, miles and miles when he is only at arm's length if you reached far enough. You crave his touch, you realize, you want him to hold you like he does at night, tucked in his chest, nose pressed against his shirt. It would smell like him, your favourite detergent, that Irish soap he uses in the shower.
‘’ I know what this would mean for the club if they think it’s your guys who did it. I don’t want this to happen. ‘’
You feel it in the back of your head, those thoughts that make you think that this is wrong, this is what happens when you stay for too long, when you stop and start thinking too much. The crescent nail-shaped wounds in your palms hurt. You are not sure how you knock out of it, but you are back, and Gil still sits in front of you, deep brown eyes observing you. You can tell he noticed it, how far away you were, barely a second. Alvarez turns to him.
‘’ I have already talked to Tig. The Fresno charter does think we’ve done it, and Marco has confirmed that they did find some evidence that points to us. ‘’ I don’t want to run again, please don’t make me do it again.  ‘’ I’ve been told his brother doesn’t seem that bothered, but he does want reparation. ‘’
‘’ Whatever he wants, but I’m keeping my fingers. ‘’
That makes him crack a smile, barely pulling at the side of his lips. He can laugh if he wants, but you are dead serious. You have met Chucky before, and even though he is a nice man, got a good job, that is not a sacrifice you are willing to do.
‘’ Cash seemed fine with him, if its fine with you. ‘’
‘’ How much? ‘’ Gil is quick to ask.
‘’ Hundred thousand. ‘’
‘’ That’s insane. She was fighting back, not- ‘’
El Padrino raises his hand, asking for silence he is rapidly met with. What surprises you is when Alvarez asks him to leave, even more so when Gilly actually does it, reluctantly, of course, but nonetheless. You can’t stay in this room if he isn’t, because you know you can’t deal with Marcus alone. You are panicking just at the idea of it, like a dog being left behind. The room feels smaller suddenly, and just as your knees lock, ready to stand up and walk away with Gil, Marcus stops you.
‘’ No. ‘’ Is all he says, ‘’ You’re staying. ‘’
Both of you watch as your man crushes his cigarette against the ashtray, giving you a brave nod before closing the door behind him. When Marcus’s attention is back on you, you can tell he is asking if you can do it, if you have enough. Gil was right on this one, it is insane, no one carries that much money in cash, not you. Your teeth are piercing your bottom lips, maybe you could spare a finger or two, you think, maybe you could do that.
‘’ I can get you 15 thousand in a few days. Not more than twenty if you give me a week. ‘’
The silence is deafening, you can hear the buzzing from the overhead lights. You are ready to pay your debt if that is what SAMCRO expects of you, any way they see fit, you stopped trying to change people’s minds a long time ago. There's no point in lying to Alvarez, even if you try, a hundred thousand dollars is just too much.
‘’ So you have a military background? ‘’
You frown. You don’t understand what this has to do with all of this.
‘’ Yes. Gil and I were in the same unit for years. ‘’
Friendship, lovers, everything in between, rangers in death and life. He takes a cigarette out of his pack, offering you one. You think about accepting it, only for a second, long enough that he can see the hesitation in your eyes before you decline.
‘’ We could use someone with your skills. ‘’ he begins, ‘’ Sharp, quick. ‘’
The smoke dries your eyes when he exhales. You know what he is offering, a type of work you have done before, something you’re good at, something that Gil would have said no to if he had stayed. Alvarez is offering you a chance to say yes, to make your own decision.
‘’ I could loan you the eighty-five thousand you need, drop it all off to SAMCRO, but you’d be in our debt. ‘’
I need to ask Gil, I need to know if this is fair, if this is legit, I need-
‘’ Can I sleep on it? ‘’
‘’ As long as you want, until they’re tired of waiting. ‘’
You don’t remember when or how you left the room, if Alvarez even told you you could leave, but before you know it you are passing the stained glass door, phone back in hand. Gil is not at the bar when you turn the corner, and you hate that it crosses your mind for a second that he left you, took his shit and drove away in anger. You know it’s not true, that you are thinking too much again. Too much thinking, too much-
You push the door open, fresh air in your lungs, the sun prickling your eyes. You want to cry, to fall on your knees and sob all of it away. All of the stress, the images that pass behind your eyes every time you close them, the ringing in your ears.
I want to go home. It’s the first thing you tell him when you reach the truck, where he is leaning against the hood, sunglasses covering his eyes. You can see the panic on his face, the way your own has crashed on him like waves. I want to go home, please, I can’t-
‘’ Hey, hey, it’s all good, I’ll drive you home, baby.  ‘’
Breathe, you can’t breathe. You only seem to be able to when he eventually brings you to the passenger side, when you feel the leather on your thighs, when the drilling noise coming from the garage finally stops as he closes the door.
Can I sleep on it?
You told Alvarez that you would do it, let them use those skills of yours as they saw fit, you do remember that now. Eighty-five thousand dollars in exchange for your life. Is it really how much you are worth?
As long as you want, until they’re tired of waiting.
You don’t feel like telling Gil, admitting to him that you took what looks like the easy way out. No out in glory and blood, guns blazing. It feels like you are out of high school all over again, passing in front of that army booth. Good pay, insurance, good pension, holding that blue disposable pen as you sign your life away for the next six years. We could use someone like you, with your knowledge. Same old shit, new leadership.
‘’ Would you think I fucked up, ‘’ you whisper as he buckles his seatbelt, ‘’ If I told you I made a deal with Alvarez? ‘’
You can see him bite his tongue, the clench in his jaw at your words. He knows to eat his words and think about it before he answers, and you are grateful for it. You couldn’t take it if he had said the first thing that came to his mind. You can’t stop your leg from shaking, up and down, up and-
‘’ Of course not. ‘’ He says, gently pressing his hand on your thigh.
You immediately feel better when he turns the corner and drives out of the yard, his palm caressing your skin in an effort to show comfort, understanding. Of course not, he says again and again, like it would fix the panic in your chest. You hope he means it, that with all his heart he thinks that it’s true.
Of course not, baby.

The metal clicks into place before you’ve even realised what he’s done. What he’s grabbed. It’s cold over your wrist, firm, and tight, and holding you to the fucking handle of his wardrobe.
‘Bastard.’ You look at the cuffs, too industrial to be anything but the real thing, and then back to him. ‘The fuck are you doing?’
These aren’t some sex-shop purchase that you could just break free from, but real, sturdy, handcuffs. Probably from the last time this pendejo got himself arrested. Intact, because of course they know someone, who knows someone, who can jimmy the lock like it’s a plaything.
‘You can’t be serious?’ you say, and you don’t mean for it to be a question, but the situation is so stupid that it ends up there anyway.
‘You won’t listen to me.’
‘So you cuff me to a fucking door?!’

💕 self-love time! talk about which ones of YOUR creations (edits, artworks, fanfics) you like the most then send to other creators to do the same 💕
For some reason, I absolutely adore my Chepe x reader fic that you can read here. My favorite characters to write are those that can hold their own, and reader is a certified hot badass babe in this one.
I'm not sure why it's one of my favorites, but the tension, the slow pace and just Chepe being so delicious in this one makes it definitely in my top favorite 5 fics of mine.

A/N: I figured I was due to give Gilly a little fluff since I'm gonna be putting the man Thru It in my series for him lmao. Enjoy some little vacation sweetness with the man who is taking over my whole brain 😌

You could hear the sound of the waves crashing from where you stood in the kitchen. The sliding glass door of the house that you’d rented for a long weekend getaway had a few steps just on the other side, but those steps were the only things separating you from the sand. The house was back far enough so that high tide wouldn’t reach you, but it also wasn’t going to take much effort at all to get to the point where the water would be washing over your feet.
Along with the sound of the waves, you could also hear the whoops and hollers of all the men that were out on the sand. Someone had set up a volleyball net and once it was up, none of them had come back to the house except to grab more drinks to bring out. You didn’t mind it—the break was hard earned, for everyone. The fact that so many of them had jumped on board with the idea of getting away for a weekend now that everything had calmed down a bit was shocking to you. It was nothing short of a miracle that you all had managed to get two houses right next to each other, letting you be neighbors on the beach.
You’d retreated back to the house you were staying in to shower and change after a swim in the ocean. Nothing would be as funny to you as the number of bikers who refused to get in the water because they were convinced they were going to be devoured by sharks. The same men who would willingly and without hesitation go into a gun-fight, wouldn’t go in the water past the waist of their swim-trunks. Gilly had gone with you, and you could tell by the look on EZ’s face that he would eventually dive in before the day was out, if for no other reason than Gaby dragging him in, but the rest of them kept their feet on the dry sand. The overly competitive games of volleyball kept them distracted enough.
Once you had managed to get as much sand off you as possible, you dried off, throwing on a simple, casual sundress instead. The only plans you had until dinner now revolved around plopping on a deck chair with a drink and a book. You’d be able to listen to and watch all of the shenanigans unfold without getting hit with any of the sand that was getting kicked up. You also wouldn’t be roped into something that was more than you bargained for by having to tag into the game. You had watched it happen to Creeper’s wife, but luckily she was competitive enough to hang with the best of them, much to Angel’s demise.
You were half-listening to the controlled chaos outside as you opened the fridge. Once the cool air hit you, your quest for something to make drinks with was instantly forgotten. Your eyes were wandering over everything in front of you, but you weren’t really registering any of it. It wasn’t until you heard heavy footsteps barging through the door and laughter that was too loud to mean anything good that you snapped out of your daze.
Coco was dripping wet, trying his best to look angry but failing at it miserably as he trekked through the house. You had to assume that his state had everything to do with Angel and Gilly who were walking in right behind him, nearly doubled over from laughter.
“Do I wanna know?” you asked with a chuckle as you grabbed a water bottle and shut the fridge door, deciding that drink-making could wait until the chaos crew had left the room.
Coco paused for long enough to explain the situation to you, water dripping from the curls that were now starting to fall out of whatever mess of a bun situation he’d tried to strap them up in. “These motherfuckers,” he gestured to Angel and Gilly, laughing when he saw they were still laughing, “threw me in the fuckin’ ocean.” He hastily pushed a stray lock of hair out of his face. “Like they wanna see me get torn apart by a shark or somethin’.”
“In our defense,” Angel said, fighting hard not to descend back into a fit of laughter, “we said whoever cost their team the next point was gettin’ tossed.” He sniffed, a smirk on his face. “Gotta up your game, bro.”
Coco laughed and shook his head. “Fuck you.”
You were shaking your head at all of them, unable to do anything else besides that as you tried to hold your amusement in the best you could. Taking a deep breath, you couldn’t suppress your grin as you looked at Coco. “Why don’t you go shower, or at least find a towel so you don’t keep dripping all over the beach house floor.”
He turned and started walking deeper into the house to where his room was. “Blame those—”
“I know,” you called after him, cutting him off with a laugh, “it’s all their fault, Coco.” Once you got your giggling under control, you turned back to Angel and Gilly. “Why don’t you give him a break and go terrorize EZ instead.”
“Psh,” Angel pushed his damp hair back, smoothing it as best he could given that the ocean had stripped all the product out of it, “don’t gotta tell me twice.” He clapped Gilly on the shoulder before turning around and heading back to the beach.
You looked at Gilly expectantly, thinking that he was going to turn and leave with a similar type of comment about wanting to go give grief so someone else on the beach. Instead, though, he stood there and stared at you, a smile on his face as he lingered in the doorway.
A soft chuckle slipped out of you as you watched him watching you. Twisting the top off the water bottle in your hand, you took a long drink before finally saying, “You good?”
His smile grew wider as he laughed. “I’m good, yea.”
“Need something?” You tilted the water bottle in his direction. “Drink?”
He shook his head as he stepped all the way into the house. He slid the screen door shut behind him before walking over to where you were standing. “I’m good,” he repeated, smile still on his face as his eyes traveled up and down your body.
“You sure?” You chuckled, something about the look in his eyes still knocking the wind out of you even though you’d lost count of the number of times you’d seen it at this point. “Looks like you might need something.”
“You always had this?” he asked, fully knowing the answer as he reached forward and ran his fingertips over the skirt of your dress.
“No,” you said with a smirk starting to pull at your lips. “Got it for the trip.” It was your turn to ask questions that you already had the answers to. “Like it?”
He nodded with no hesitation, eyes lingering everywhere longer than they needed to as his gaze made it back up to your face. “Looks good.”
You smiled, trying to sound nonchalant despite the heat creeping up your neck and into your cheeks. “Glad you approve.”
He chuckled at your choice of words, the way you phrased it as though there had ever been a time when Gilly didn’t love whatever you put on. Sure, he made more than enough comments about how you didn’t really have to wear much of anything at his place, but that had nothing to actually do with your choice in clothing.
Suddenly he was pressed up against you, chest to chest, hands slithering around until they were resting on the small of your back. He smelled like salt water and the slightest hint of body wash that was still clinging to him. You smiled, palm resting flat against his chest. A few stray droplets that were still lingering on his skin melded into yours as well.
“Your team is gonna start wondering where you are,” you joked. Despite your words being so casual, your tone gave away the fact that the proximity was doing more to you than you wanted to admit.
He shrugged, a smirk tugging at his lips. “They’ll figure it out.”
You laughed, rolling your eyes as you tried to get your wandering thoughts under control. That task would’ve been easier to complete if Gilly’s hands hadn’t been wandering as well. His hands slid down from the small of your back until the tips of his fingers were grazing against the backs of your thighs. You leaned back slightly, hands resting on the edge of the counter.
“Gilly…” you chuckled as you said it, but there was still a hint of warning in your tone.
He laughed as he leaned in closer to you, erasing the tiny sliver of space that had been left between you. “What?” he asked, feigning innocence as he pressed a kiss to your jaw.
You rolled your eyes, knowing that for your sanity’s sake you should push him away but you couldn’t make yourself do it. “Don’t ask like you don’t know.”
Both of you were laughing at that for a moment before he caught your lips with his. You smiled into the kiss at first, the way that it started off soft and sweet. You could still feel the rumble of his laughter as his mouth moved with yours. You brought one hand up to rest in the spot where his neck met his shoulder, applying just the slightest bit of pressure to bring him closer to you.
He took the action to be an invitation, apparently. You felt his hands grip tighter onto you and you knew immediately what was coming. You pushed up with your hand that was still on the edge of the counter, allowing him to set you up on it. Your legs instinctively wrapped around his waist, pulling the two of you as close together as you could manage. His hands slid down from your hips until they were resting on top of your thighs. You couldn’t fight the smile off your face while you kissed him, feeling the way he was slowly but surely sliding up the hem of your skirt.
“Gilly,” you said, his name accompanied by a breathless laugh as you pulled your lips off of his.
“Yea?” he said it like he had no idea what could possibly be giving you pause.
You set your hands on top of his to stop him, shaking your head. “Stop,” you told him, trying to make your whisper sound harsh but failing as you continued to laugh.
“Stop what?” he played dumb, hands continuing to wander.
“There’s someone in the house!” you whisper-shouted, laughter still shining through as you tried to swat his hands away. “It’s not the time or—”
“Coco is gonna be pouting for at least—”
“And the rest of your friends who keep traipsing in and out of here? Stealing all your beer?” you asked, smiling as your forehead came to rest against his.
He chuckled as his hand grazed along the inside of your thigh. “We could be quick.”
You rolled your eyes with a smile. Shaking your head at him, you said, “One, I don’t wanna be quick.” You kissed his cheek. “And two, I’ve got no interest in getting caught. I don’t need the guys knowing me like that,” you added with a laugh.
It got him to laugh. More importantly, it got his hands to still for a moment as he considered what you were saying.
You took the hesitation as a win. Wrapping your hand around his forearm, you repositioned his hands so that they were resting on your hips again, over the fabric of your dress instead of under it. “How about,” you leaned back just slightly so that you could see his eyes, “we finish this later,” you kissed him softly on the lips, “and I’ll make it worth the wait?”
He laughed, sighing as his head dropped back so that he was staring at the ceiling for a moment. “You’re the devil sometimes, you know that?”
You laughed as you cupped his face, tracing your thumb along his cheek for a moment before your hands dropped back into your laugh. “You started it.”
He rolled his eyes, shaking his head at you even though he knew you were right. “Whatever,” he said as he laughed.
You hopped down off the counter as he stepped away. Reaching out, you managed to tangle your fingers with his before he stepped too far away. “Hey.” You pulled him back to you, or rather, you pulled yourself closer to him. He looked at you, eyebrows raised waiting for whatever you were going to say next. You laughed, tilting your head so that you could steal another quick kiss before saying, “I love you.”
His smile grew a little wider. “Yea,” he tried his best to sound sarcastic but the look in his eyes gave him away, “I love you too.” He took another step towards the door that led back outside. “Remember that later.”
