Jim and Felix performed at the @youngplaceto for a fundraiser — #melt — last night. A few shots from the fundraiser for the upcoming production with Sara Porter and Jessie Garron. I just wanted to choose one photo but Jim said he wanted all the photos posted. I said, “Are you sure? Even the last one?” He said “Sure. I like all of them.” Felix wanted the same plus all the backgrounds removed and the photos lined up but who’s got that kind of time. Jim is known for his sense of humour. Were they joking? You can find two artists of different generations working together in other areas of art, like music, but in dance it’s not that common. Sara and Jessie have such amazing chemistry and connection you would think that they’ve been working together for decades. #choreographer #dancer #moderndance #performanceart #coremagazines #saraporterdance (at Artscape Youngplace) https://www.instagram.com/p/CpbN-2gOPSO/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Experiential music on the theremin at MoMA also possibly the eeriest sounding music ever recorded
The Museum of Modern Art, New York, asked musicologist Dorit Chrysler to create a sound piece on the theremin. Chrysler’s concept didn’t just involve writing a piece of music and then playing it on the instrument. She brought in sculptures from Alexander Calder as part of the music score, a preprogrammed Moog synthesizer, and filmed the process in the MoMA sculpture garden. She put together an album of the same name from footage captured from in the sculpture garden. The work, Calder Plays Theremin, launches as new music on vinyl and cassette this week with a live audio-visual performance in NYC.

Testing is also a thing they do nowadays. God forbid that they give you a hint of what software they'll use or what the test will be about. Might as well put you in a corner on top of a desk under a spotlight in front of the whole building full of people, fire shots at your feet and yell "Dance ... ," while a timer ticks away in the background and people watch, criticize and rate you from the "audience," (there is usually a panel of 3-7 people, who don't know why they're there or were forced to be in the room) 'cause the test has nothing to do with the job or how you will perform on the job. People who pass the test may not perform well on the job. People who don't pass the test are sometimes just bad test-takers and probably would outperform the person who got the job but you may never know 'cause bad test-takers don't usually get the job. What the heck is a portfolio for, or work samples, or references. I think they just do it to torment random (and sometimes targeted) people who answer job ads.
Applying for jobs is a hell designed specifically to torment autistic people. Here is a well-paying task which you know in your heart and soul if they just gave you a desk and left you alone and allowed you to do it you would sit there and be more focused and enthusiastic and excellent at it than anyone else in the building. However, before they allow you to perform the task, you must pass through 3-4 opaque social crucibles where you must wear uncomfortable clothes and make eye contact while everyone expects you to lie, but not too much (no one is ever clear exactly how much lying is expected, “over” honesty is however penalized). You are being judged almost entirely on how well you understand these very specific and unclear rules that no one has explained. None of this has anything to do with your ability to perform the desired task.

Some people don’t shout their accomplishments from the rooftops or even quietly bask in the glory of their big wins. Some do a lot for society but we may never learn their names. One woman aims to change things by shining a spotlight on people who make a difference. She’s creating a platform to showcase achievements within the African Canadian community and she’s doing it through film. (more…) “”

Make housing affordable for everyone.
I hate, hate, HATE the term “affordable housing.” I hate that we’ve normalized it. I hate that we just accept that the majority of housing, a basic human right, is unaffordable to much of the population. Housing should be affordable as a baseline. If rich people want to add arcades and gold-plated hot tubs on top so be it, but everyone, everyone, regardless of income level, should have access to a clean, comfortable home with enough light and space to make life worth living.
