The fastest way I find possible to culturally immerse once-self to a community is to walk into a car hire shop, rent out a car and drive around the country.. you can write a book after, trust me. Heading to Chichen Itza, about half way there is a cozy rustic restaurant called Hacienda Selva Maya.. the restaurant is an old colonial style building with modern roof, the grounds have beautiful large trees and older remnants of colonial building. Lovely place to cool off..
