Letter from Clarice Lispector to Fernando Sabino
"Washington, december 11th of 1956, Tuesday
Fernando,
I’m reading that book from Guimarães Rosa and can’t help but write to you. I’ve never seen something like that! It’s the most beautiful thing these days. I don’t know the limits to his inventive power, but it’s beyond imaginable. I feel like a fool. His language, so perfect even in intonation, it's directly understood by the intimate language of ourselves - and in that sense he more than invented, he discovered, or better, invented the truth. What more could you want? I even feel afflicted by liking it so much. Now I understand your enthusiasm, Fernando. I already understood because of Sagarana, but this one goes so beyond that it explains even better what he wanted with Sagarana. The book is giving me a reconciliation with everything, explaining the invented things, enriching it all. How everything is worth it! The smallest try is worth it. I know I’m kind of confused, but it will go like that, mixed. I think the same as you: genius. What other name to give? That one.
Write me, tell things you think about him. In that way I read even better.
A hug from the friend
Clarice."

A letter from the brazilian poet Hilda Hilst to Homero Silveira, a literary critic
Tumblr media
“Campinas / October / 79
Homero dear, I miss you, thanks for the books but I found It prudent not putting the first 3, It’s true that they’re horrible! I find my first poems all very bad, some totally idiot, Wilson Martins said once that it should be forbidden to publish poetry under 25, I now endorse it completely, in Presságio I was 20, in Balada de Alzira 21, in Balada do Festival (the “best” one) 25. It only works if you’re serious like Rimbaud. So I will suggest to the Instituto Nacional do Livro that It stays like: Poesia (1959 - 1979). It’s 20 years of poetry. I don’t want at this point, that someone utterly dull says: look how crappy she was at 20!”
