Get to Know You Tag Game
Thanks @divinemissem13 for the tag.
Currently Reading:
Bits of Voyager background books Mosaic and Pathways by Jeri Taylor, bits of other Star Trek novels, Mayan history book mostly for references. Last regular book I read was Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. That is one spooky chick, but you have to admire her dedication.
Currently Watching:
Just finished Star Trek TOS and I now totally understand Spirk or heck all three of them but the sexism OMG Gene. Just got into X-Files and am watching the series with my kid. Scully and Mulder are so weirdly close immediately yet supposedly not romantic that they remind me of Chakotay and Janeway. Scully stands before Mulder in her bra in the SECOND episode.
Currently Obsessed With:
Writing and reading Voyager, most specifically Janeway/Chakotay, fan fics (surprise!). Also doll collecting. My profile pic is of my Janeway and Chakotay dolls. Because of course I have them.
I'll tag @sparkleplatypuswriter and @captainkjaneway1. I know there are others but I'm not sure who all has been tagged yet.
Get to know you tag game
Hey thanks, @figureofdismay! It's like you knew I'm just sitting around waiting for my kidlet to finally fall asleep.
Currently reading:
I'm listening to If I Understood You, Would I Have This Look on My Face?: My Adventures in the Art and Science of Relating and Communicating by Alan Alda -- which is great so far, and I do recommend it, but his podcast Clear + Vivid is a great and shorter entry point to the same concepts.
And I have @curator-on-ao3's epic Youthful Exuberance (Some Kind of Love) on my new Paperwhite, its maiden voyage.
And I just finished Somebody's Fool by Richard Russo. Russo super fans, slide into my DMs. I think I'm gonna reread Straight Man.
Currently watching:
We're working our way through TOS, a rewatch for both of us obviously, and I'm very slowly rewatching TXF on my own. I really don't have a show right now. I'm boring. I just want TLOU S2 already.
Currently obsessed with: I mean I just produced two J/P fanvids and a oneshot within one week so. That's a given. I'm working on something um, elaborate, for Cohen, which is consuming my every waking thought and has three separate playlists (for vibe purposes) and 57 notes in Evernote so I don't forget my own plot (I would and will). And I guess it could be said that I'm obsessing over whether to leave academia (again) ahead of the fall semester. Fun!
You guys know I have tagxiety but I'm gonna go @curator-on-ao3 since she just tagged me on something and therefore @missparker & @divinemissem13 for the same reason 😅 and @emilie786 cuz I just saw you post something, hi! No pressure.

What if Janeway and Chakotay met in the Academy?
First two chapters of my new story "Star-Crossed" are up on ao3. The story is complete but will be listed by chapter.
Excerpt:
“Chakotay has someone special,” Sveta said.  “Janeway.”
“What about her?” he asked.
“Yeah, who’s that?” Chert added.
Sveta shook her head.
“You’re both idiots,” she said.  “Admiral Edward Janeway gave a guest lecture here last semester.  As in, less than a month ago.  You don’t remember?”
“Nope,” Chakotay said.
He’d taken notes on the lecture, of course, but he didn’t see the need to know every stuffed shirt’s name.  Admirals tended to let you know that sort of thing without prompting.
“Oooh,” Chert said.  “Starfleet royalty.”
Great.  He didn’t have names to faces yet, so he didn’t remember her.  She hadn’t bothered him with a complaint, so there was that at least.
“You’re so screwed,” Sveta said.
“Maybe she’s the exception to the rule,” Chakotay said.
“I wouldn’t count on it,” Sveta said. “Remember last year?  Admiral Benson’s son got a professor fired for a minor mistake.  A professor.  What do you think an admiral will do to a cadet?”
“We’re over-glorified test proctors,” Chakotay said.  “What could I do wrong?”
“I saw her,” Sveta said.  “She’s pretty.”

Why I Still Love J/C
Okay, I just really have to get this off my chest. There are people who don't like Chakotay, or won't ship him with Janeway because of the actor or the bad way Native American representation is shown. Now if you just plain don't want to mess with the character, don't like him, whatever, fine. But please don't let something an actor said or did keep you from loving a character or a work he was in. And don't ignore bad representation - try to improve on it.
I love J/C because I look at what is on screen. Their chemistry and caring relationship is incredible and inspiring to me. Everyone is welcome to their own ships, but that's the only one I have because it just seems so obvious to me. But I keep hearing people gripe about Beltran, or the representation. You can fix that, or read work that is fixed. It's called fanfic. If you're into the fandom at all you can see that fanfic Chakotay is not just like Chakotay on screen and definitely nothing like the actor.
The actor who played Icheb did some very bad stuff, but I hardly hear anyone say they won't use Icheb in a story because of this. So why Beltran? Why can't we just ignore these people instead of calling attention to them over and over? I'm not saying justify what they did, but remember they are real people with their own faults. They played a role, and even the most enthusiastic Star Trek actors are not as in love with the show as its fans are. It's hard to understand it, but it's true. I've watched podcasts with Tom and Harry's actors. They had forgotten many episodes, and didn't even know people didn't like Threshold. Why? Because this was a job for them. Maybe they enjoyed it, but it was still a job.
As far as representation goes, yeah they did an unbelievably horrible job, it's there from the beginning when Paris says racist stuff about "Indians". So I try to research, find stuff that is more accurate hopefully, or at least more respectful. It's a challenge, but worth it because there isn't enough good literature about Native Americans. And as far as Chakotay's character goes, there was, like so much of Voyager, wasted potential. So I try to add in that potential. Many fanfic writers do this wonderfully. I can recommend so many. His background in the Maquis, his faith, etc. We have that power.
TL;DR: If there is a ship you love, or a character, I really hope you don't let actors or bad writing turn you away.

Tuvok and Seven should have solved the Pon Farr together
Okay, yes, I realize that Tuvok is totally devoted to his wife, but think about it. His wife had to have had someone else to get through the Pon Farr too, right? Like a discreet neighbor or something. It's Vulcan. I mean, why wouldn't they have some sort of arrangement?
But clearly Tuvok hasn't thought of anything cause he's like, nah, I can just meditate this crap away which uh no dude, you cannot, how old are you anyway? Packing all that emotion, rage, etc. that Vulcans actually have in abundance rather than less of is gonna make anyone explode unless dealt with (which is also why Janeway and Chakotay would have exploded from the sexual tension by like season 4 at least.) So what can Tuvok do?
Using the Holodeck is a total copout, in my opinion. That's like saying all Vulcans have had to do this whole time when separated from their mates was keep a dirty magazine hidden under their mattress. I just don't think so. This is like his wife - you aren't gonna fool Tuvok with a picture of her, guy's been married for decades. He's got her down and you can bet he remembers every seven years' bonanza cause come on.
Here's where Seven comes in. Tuvok and Seven GET each other. They're stranded together with a bunch of overacting illogical beings that never listen to them and thus constantly run into trouble that could have been prevented had they just listened to Tuvok or Seven. They know this. Ultimately, they have to go along with everything, but that doesn't stop them being sarcastic as hell about it. I bet they got together for some tea every once in a while and spilled that tea like mad, making fun of the rest of Voyager until they'd snarked themselves senseless.
Another thing they have in common - the total practicality. Seven wants to experience everything, but she's not going to just fall in love with anybody (especially not somebody random but we won't get into that). No, if Harry had gone along with her it would have been a one nighter, and she'd have left like "That will be all, Harry". Which would have hurt Harry but -
Not Tuvok. No, this would be perfect for him. He'd get the necessities out of the way, and she'd get her experience, and then they'd just walk away and never, ever mention it to themselves or anyone else and been completely fine with it. Just carried on their friendship as usual.
I realize this was network T.V., blah blah (though look at what they DID get away with, just think about it) but I think it'd be absolutely perfect. Tuvok & Seven besties till the end.
Tumblr media
They would never, ever tell and the thought is so awesome.
Alternate solution: Tuvok could have killed Neelix. You know he wanted to do it. Look how happy he was to murder him in the Holodeck! And all he'd get would be confinement to his quarters where he could be alone and do science projects. No problem!
Tumblr media
Tuvok's thinking about it RIGHT NOW.
You're welcome, Voyager writers.

The Flower Children Chapter II
More aftereffects of inhaling pollen!
Excerpt:
Three weeks later . . .
Chakotay woke up to the sound of vomiting.  Kathryn was in the fresher.  Half-asleep, he wandered to the door.  She was leaning over the toilet.
“You okay?” he asked.
She wiped her mouth and looked up slowly, her eyes boring into him.
“ Wonderful , Chakotay,” she snapped.
She pushed herself up.  It could have been Neelix’s cooking again.  Last night’s meal was especially interesting.  But the Doctor had examined all of the other women, except for her.  She’d been busy, as always.
“Do you think . . .” he began.
Her eyes grew wide and her face green.  She swung back to the toilet.  Ten minutes later they were in Sickbay.  He held her hand as the Doctor looked at the computer.  More humming.  She squeezed his hand hard enough to break it.
“We are looking at six pregnancies in total now,” the Doctor said, turning back to them.  “A much more manageable number.”
Well, yes, but also, no, he thought.
“Six?” she asked.
“Including yours, Captain.”

Voyager needed a real command triangle
Okay, this is long, but bear with me.
This gets me everytime. Janeway thinks that if nothing physically intimate happens with Chakotay, then there won't be any problems with her decision making. Which is total bunk. They obviously both care about each other, even if you think it's not romantic (but come on of course it is) which causes issues when it's crunch time. She tends to take his disagreements with her personally rather than professionally, and he lets his feelings get in the way of removing her from command when she really, really needs to be, both for the sake of the ship and for her.
So here's where Tuvok comes in. He's Janeway's friend, but able to distance himself emotionally and be logical (as long as he's not melding with Suder). So when the top two are having a fierce argument, bring in Tuvok as the tie breaker. Janeway doesn't absolutely have to agree with Tuvok's decision, but she'd be getting more than one perspective. Also, Tuvok ought to be able to step up and in dire situations, relieve one of them of duty. This would be really juicy for Tuvok, so there'd have to be specific rules for it so he didn't relieve his commanding officers every episode, but it would solve so many issues. For instance:
Scorpion: Janeway wants to make a deal with the Borg despite everyone else in the room, including Neelix, questioning if this idea is even remotely sane. Chakotay has a neato spider story, but this goes nowhere with Janeway. Enter Tuvok with an idea that would somehow include a little of each of their POVs without all of the crew possibly dying.
Equinox: Janeway's gone so far over the edge that even she realizes it by the end of the episode. The situation becomes way too personal for her. So Chakotay should have relieved her of duty, looong before she got to the point of nearly executing a prisoner. Making sure the captain is in proper shape is part of his job. Instead, he lets himself get relieved of duty. Enter Tuvok who knocks some sense into Chakotay about the captain clearly needing a break from the non-stop commanding thing that would do anyone in. They get the Doctor involved, relieve her temporarily of duty and get her some meds and counseling (which they all need) and figure out some logical steps to take with the Equinox crew. Tuvok could also make sure he's got Janeway securely trapped behind at least two force fields.
Same thing for when Chakotay goes off the rails and Janeway doesn't notice. We see how it works in the last season or so when Tuvok and Chakotay team up on her to prevent her obsessive need to sacrifice herself. Chakotay and Tuvok could have been working at supporting the captain the whole show and she could have had two good counselors for every weighty decision instead of doing it all on her own. And she and Chakotay could have had a decent romance.
You're welcome, Voyager writers.

Thanks for the answer! I just got really into the fandom within the last year or so, and find writing J/C helps with the frustration of no J/C allowed on the show. At least that they showed us anyway.
I do love that Chakotay is such a gentleman, but I wonder if, maybe, he could have just for once come out like "Hey I like you, do you like me, if you do then we can get together if not it's cool, check yes or no." Janeway has to make a LOT of decisions. Help her out on that one. Maybe she was waiting for some confirmation from him? They're both such proud dorks in love.
Hi! Thanks for the comment on my story. Enjoying your tumblr blog.
Oh a question. What do you like best about the J/C ship?
Hi! What a lovely ask. I almost feel ill-equipped to answer it as a longtime J/C shipper but as someone who just entered the fandom and is doing a solid rewatch. However I will let my imposter syndrome wane and step up :)
There’s so much to love about them and I feel it almost changes depending on the season, because early seasons J/C and late seasons J/C really do change a lot.
In general though (and with a focus on early seasons), I’m such a sucker for ships where they *shouldn’t* and they both know they *shouldn’t* but here they are, developing these deep feelings, unable to stop them.
With J/C, I love that all this happens in a space where Chakotay just intrinsically respects Janeway and will *never* cross that line unless she explicitly gives him a signal. Even on New Earth, he just passively waits for her to come around (and we all know with more time she would have).
Oh sure, he’ll build a bathtub, he’ll flirt with her incessantly, he’ll show her his medicine bundle, he’ll bring her a rose, he’ll try and pull her out of the depths of her depression, but the man is *never* going to kiss her.
And that just
I dunno. Is so *them.* And I love it.

Voyager B plot where Neelix hears two ensigns talking about making weed brownies and he assumes that marijuana is just another human herb like pepper or thyme and so he makes a whole meal that’s full of so much space weed and everyone gets way too high. And somehow that is 1000% important to the main plot.
