This analyze is interesting!

I always though the fact that Mary was here was because they wanted to show a new dynamic with the main characters. Even though the show is literally about John and Sherlock relationship and the different cases.

It's interesting to see that they did not just add Mary like that but included her in a certain dynamic where John and Mary would be like the parents of tall and awkward child. Not saying that love between John and Sherlock is not valid! Actually I Find interesting the possibility of John loving tenderly Mary yet being also able to love Sherlock as hard maybe even harder ? since He knows Sherlock since a long time and all...

Anyway what I'm trying to say is that they're showing that Mary is not just a peaceful woman for sure she is able to fight for her security and is as strong as other nemesis. And the fact that we see Mary searching for Sherlock with John in a drugs squat later was more for me Mary trying to show her will for redemption. Maybe she is trying to be as caring as John with Sherlock,worrying and even parenting him. A bit like a sort of "second mother". Since John did accept Mary even though her past and behavior towards Sherlock,maybe she is trying to repair her mistakes by taking care of her new family (and I included Sherlock in it)

She is dangerous,of course. She is cruel when knowing she is in danger or someone she loves is actually in danger. And it's not a bad actually. It means that they did create a deep character. And not only "the wife of John Watson".

In conclusion it was REALLY cruel from her to do this. And she did hurt Sherlock. She is strong and dangerous and really it's better to be on her side. I like to imagine S4 with Mary being protective about both John AND Sherlock (her child too of course.)

Ps: let's not forget that in the original books even though Mary is very clever ,she is a bit more calm and boring than in the show. And I would be happy to thanks BBC for what they did. I like to see dangerous,cruel and clever women in actual fiction. And now I can be happy to see Her as strong and deep as a character like Adler (not in the same way but yet.)

Oh!oh!oh! And it's not overanalyzing! Really it's cool to see people analyzing scenes,plans,characters and scenario. I mean it's one of the purpose of movies and shows. Do not think that because it's "only" a show of "divertissement" it's not an actual artistic production that can't be analyzed ... Actually This is the kind of things you analyzed in multimedia/movies/cinema studies!

If you find valid to analyze a book and its characters why not a show. Even more though it's from books at the beginning.

If you think that analyzing shows is stupid or people doing it are crazily overanalyzing so maybe it means you don't consider the show as an artistic production at all...?

It's your right not analyzing it and enjoying the show just like that but some people like to analyze and find meaning and explanations.Let them be .

You know what was unnecessarily cruel? Mary at Leinster Gardens after shooting the coin. She kicks the coin over for Sherlock to pick up. The man she shot a week earlier. The man who should still be in hospital. She makes him bend over, putting pressure on his bullet wound. She doesn’t care that he’s hurting. She still needs him not to tell John but acts as if she wants him to physically hurt. She still needs something from him yet she treats him like garbage. This is not what a kind woman looking for redemption does. She is cruel. She is written as a cruel character. She is cruel in TAB. She will continue to be cruel in S4.
