🔥Wyld Fairies🔥

Wyld fairies are closest in essence to magic itself, to nature and those primordial forces they let flow through them: the elements. They eschew court-made laws, borders, customs, and causes, simply forging their own paths through life with little consideration of worldly issues.

🕸️Dark Fairies🕸️

These fae dwell in the domains of shadow - in fairytales with unhappy endings, children’s nightmares, and under the surface waiting to strike. They rejoice in sowing discord and causing mayhem.

Some of these inspirations may not feature fae or fairies, but they do feature magic in a city or domestic setting and the dynamics that come with it. To hide your magic in human civilisation or to live with it open and proud?

Small or large, these critters love the home and being cozy. On occasion they can be found causing mischief to nearby humans, borrowing or sabotaging items. They even help humans sometimes….. in their own way.

Kings and Queens, Princes and Princesses, dukes, barons and knights. Those who rule their court with benevolence and those that delight in destruction. Some of these examples are included for vibes and queerness.

with the artists apps (and maybe the writers apps too seeing how fast the artists went) closed already is that going to shift the timeline forward a little bit or are you going to wait until the date you already decided to start looking through them?

We will still be sticking to our estimated timeline. This will give the mods time to prepare a few more things before we bring in our artists. While our initial plan is to have all acceptance emails sent out by the 26th, we may send some in early. We will keep the social media channels updated on that though.

Hello! The guidelines state that artists and mods will be paid, but do not specify writers. Will writers be paid the same as artists?

Writers will be paid! And yes, they will be paid the same

We have a minimum flat fee of 150AUD (approx 102USD/92EUR) to be paid out as a base amount. And if sales do well we will give artists and writers a bonus as well!

They will all also get a complimentary copy of the zine and merch

We Have reached 400 applications so far! That is crazy!

We will be accepted 100 more applications before we close the application forms and start deliberating on our chosen 30 artists. We also still have plenty of space available for writer apps. But don't worry if you miss out, we plan to have more projects like this in the future as well!

Hi there! I’d like to know if non-explicit artistic nudity is permitted with regards to artist applications/portfolio submissions? Several of the pieces I’d consider my best work fall under that label, although I wouldn’t consider them nsfw by any means, so I’d just like to check before going ahead with my application :D

Yes they are allowed.

Art deemed nsfw is generally allowed, as long as it is nothing explicit. So that includes nudity and some blood/violence, but no explicit sexual scenes or gore.

I'd like to follow up on that last ask about quality of examples. The majority of my finished colored work isn't sapphic but I'm so so interested in doing more of it, I'd be afraid that the lack of this might make it seem like I'm not an appropriate artist for this project at all. I had planned on sharing some in my application that are in theme as well but not the end quality I'd strive for. Does this sort of thing play into choosing the right contributors?

The three chosen artworks should be what you are most proud of, and if they reflect some of the themes and content for this zine (like butch people , fairies, or sapphics) then that is great! If it doesn't show those things, that is also acceptable. We want to see what pieces YOU choose.

Having an artist select 3 main pieces will show us what they think is important in their art, and if they also have an eye for curating their own work.

If those pieces pique our interest, we will also look at your social media link/s or portfolio link to see what other work you do.

We read each individual application, so you can also further explain why you have chosen each piece in the form too.

hi sorry if it's a dumb question but I gotta check,the whole "link examples of illustrations you've made in the finish you aim to achieve for this project"when it says finish you aim it's in reference to the art style of the finished illustrations right?

This isn't a dumb question at all.

So what we are asking for, is to see art of a quality that you will plan to do for this zine. Say if you plan to draw an artwork that will be in a full-colour painterly style , you would not provide an artwork example that is a a black and white pencil sketch.

Or if you prefer to draw flat colour illustrations and plan to do so for your piece for this zine, then you would not submit an example artwork that is a life-like digital painting.

This also excludes simple sketches and wips. We want to see finished artworks for your examples. That way we can see your skill level and that you are also able to finish artworks.

🐸Applications are OPEN!🐸

"FEY: A Guide to Fae of the Butch Variety'' is an art book project celebrating butch folk and fairies, framed as a field guide! . We welcome all sorts of butch and queer fairy ideas and are excited to see how our artists and writers plan to explore the concept.

This project will feature 30 artists and 6 writers. Creators will be split into 6 groups, by theme: Garden Fairies, House Fairies, Dark Fairies, Courtly Fairies, City Fairies, Wyld Fairies.
