Yubileyny had a clear hierarchy. Regardless of how nice and helpful they were towards the young skaters, and fellow seniors with different coaches, it was impossible to deny that Yakov's five students were at the top of the food chain.
Or: How Victor Nikiforov became who he is through the eyes of his coach, and his coach's other students
(my first Yuri on ice fic!!! Let me know if you like it!! 🥺💜)

So, I have this image of Victor as my background, and I was trying to show my dad the weather for tomorrow, but he just looked at my screen and went "I just see a girl."
And I absolutely lost it. Could not stop laughing.
Then I tried to explain that it's supposed to be an 18 year old boy with long hair and my brother (who's watching this) goes "the japonese are weird."
So then I go "Actually he's supposed to be russian."
And my dad goes "Doesn't make it less weird. Just makes it an unholy mix...."
I had absolutely no idea how to answer that, so I just told him the weather and went to clear the table. They're talking about football now.... And I'm still not sure what the correct answer to that is......

Georgi: The printer messed up the invitations! It was supposed to say "Yuuri's Birthday!"
Victor: What does it say?
Georgi: "Yuuri's Bi"
Victor: Well, that still works, doesn't it?

I see there’s a lot of speculation on how Victor got as Extra as he is. And of course, Yakov played his part, and there’s still a good chance that Victor has a pair of equally Extra parents, and all of Victor’s rinkmates are Extra one way or another, but—
there’s something Yakov, Victor’s hypothetical parents and his rinkmates have in common: the city they live in. And I tell you, if there’s a city that’s more Extra and sweet at the same time than St.Petersburg, it’s probably not in Russia.
I knew a girl from St.Petersburg who, at nineteen, hitchhiked all the way to Novosibirsk to see someone who she’d never met before in real life for their birthday. She couldn’t afford a train, you see, let alone a plane, so she hitchhiked. There and back again.
I know a girl from Moscow whose girlfriend from St.Petersburg bought a two-bedroom apartment because she knows that her girl likes her space. They’d only been dating for two months, and saw each other in person for less than a week, and the Moscow girlfriend doesn’t even like St.Petersburg.
When I first came to St.Petersburg in the early 2000s, a friend of ours was treating us to coffee (and St.Petersburg has the best coffee in Russia) and telling us that he’s got a gay friend. At first I thought that was yet another “I’m not homophobic, I’ve even got a gay friend” speech, but no. He went on and on about how awesome the friend is and how happy he is for the guy to be gay and out and how great it is that in our day people can be what they really are.
When I came to St.Petersburg for the second time, I was alone on Nevsky at five in the morning. My train arrived at half past four, and I assumed everyone would be asleep and no one would come to meet me, so I completely missed my friends who were waiting for me. I didn’t have a cell phone, so I decided to take a walk to Neva. Somewhere around Anichkov Bridge, which is about half way from the train station to the river, I bumped into a very handsome black man (for the record - Russia is not very racially diverse). In perfect Russian with a Piter accent he asked me what a young girl like me (I was nineteen and looked younger) was doing there that late (evidently it wasn’t ‘early’ for him, it was ‘late’) and offered to escort me home. I got spooked, because where I’m from, nothing good comes from strangers talking to you in the middle of the night, so I refused, he apologized, asked if I’d be all right on my own and walked away. I reckon if I had taken him up on his offer, he’d really escort me home just to be sure I was okay.
My friends, by the way, who hardly knew me at all, figured out the time I’d be arriving and didn’t sleep all night so that they could pick me up. They wanted to surprise me, though, so they didn’task which train I’d be taking, and ended up looking for me on the wrong one, so we missed each other completely, and while I was taking my walk to make sure they got enough sleep, they were worried sick where I could have gone.
Another friend of mine had family in St.Petersburg. Well, when I say ‘family’— he used to have an uncle. Who was married to this woman and had a kid with her, so my friend had a cousin about his age. And then the uncle and the aunt got divorced, both of them remarried and had more children, and the uncle disappeared to parts unknown.
The friend had a key to his aunt’s apartment and a bed there (not a room, no one had their own room in Piter back then), and he’d go there sometimes just to get away from his daily routine. His aunt’s son is like a cousin to him, and his actual cousin feels more like a sister.
A guy from St.Petersburg once proposed to me after we spent two hours talking in somebody’s kitchen on a New Year party. We hardly knew each other before that, both were completely sober and didn’t even make out. I didn’t suspect it was a proposal until years later, and by then I was happily married, but — even if it wasn’t really a proposal, he gave me an item that was highly symbolic in his subculture and asked me to go to Piter with him. I think I broke his heart with my cluelessness.

can u imagine phichit filming yuuri early on in college just pointing the camera at yuuri's poster of viktor and then at him like "who's that man" and yuuri is giggling and replies "that's my husband"
then fast forward a couple years phichit @ viktor and yuuri's house is once again filming yuuri and points the camera at viktor and back at yuuri and asks "who's that man" and yuuri is giggling and replies "that's my husband" while flashing his ring

I had a thought....
What if in Ice adolescence Victor is very nervous, and Yakov tells him that the only short cut to a gold medal is for him to do the skating he likes best??
Like, just Yakov and Victor being the father-son duo we deserve in Ice adolescence, tbh!!!

I always think back fondly to episode 10 of YOI and how up to that point the whole fandom was speculating about Victor’s motivations. Was he just using Yuuri to get his inspiration back or revitalize his own career? Was he terminally ill and couldn’t skate competitively anymore and was living vicariously through Yuuri? Why was he really doing all this?
And the episode 10 hits and it turns out nah, Victor doesn’t have some hidden agenda or dark secret, he’s just the world’s biggest lovesick puppy who fell in love with a drunk guy who danced with him at a party and then never called him back and left him pining for 6 months until he saw a YouTube video of his dream boy doing his routine and obviously this is destiny calling him to drop his highly successful career to chase after True Love because Victor Nikiforov wants to live his life like a romcom protagonist.

so... for everyone at the cup of china, yuuri was a total nervous wreck and then he disappeared off with victor and came back after at least 15 minutes totally relaxed yet blushing with slightly messy hair and delivered an absolute showstopper of performance and then kissed victor on the ice.
basically what I'm saying is that every single person present backstage has a very incorrect very nsfw idea of what happened in those 15 minutes.

I really saw that teaser and went from 0% interest, haven’t thought about the show in years, to “viktor moving out and calling yakov to walk him through basic things like unclogging a toilet or using an instapot instead of just googling it like a normal semi-functional adult”

Ok, wait, what if at the end, when Victor is skating (I assume his routine from the teaser will be at the end of the movie for story telling purposes), we see a bunch of people all over the world watching him, like a boy in Thailand, one in Switzerland, a tiny 5 year old in Moscow, and of course a cute 13 year old in Japan........
(bonus points, if we then jump to present day and see the same people watching present day Victor skate/we get a call back to that moment if season 2 ever happens)

Ok, but like where is my au fic, where Otabek talks to Yuri during summer camp, and they become long distance friends???
(plus points where no one from the russian skating team believe that Yuri has an actual friend, until they meet Otabek.)
(plus plus points, if Leo and JJ also aren't really sure if Yuri is a real person, and think that Otabek sometimes just doesn't want to hang out with them)
(I hc that Leo, JJ and Otabek were rink mates at one point btw)
