Until it’s the first intimate scene in the script they’re shooting, it’s pushing 35 degrees inside the soundstage cause the aircon’s being fixed, and he’s wearing all leather, crammed up against Rhys and a wall of the set; sweaty, exhausted, and near completely fucking delirious.

“I’m gonna die.” He whines.

"You're not gonna die."

The show makes it to New Zealand.

Later when they’re on the beach with their chips, he tells Taika about it. Taika giggles for what feels like a full thirty seconds and then says, “Did you really just out yourself to a kid? A kid in a Four Square?”

He thinks back to the moment, goes over his words for a second. Oh yeah. Maybe he did. There's a tiny moment of panic, of 'Oh God', but then he shrugs, cause really, it means nothing and no-one will ever believe them. “Maybe I did.”

Taika looks over at him then, actually bothering to make eye contact. “Rhys.” He says, tone bizarrely honest and wholeheartedly sincere for a second. “You deserve this. You do.” After a bit, he adds, “It’s that Tall Poppy thing, isn’t it? Let it get you and it’ll fuck you up,” which is probably quite right but still doesn’t really explain away the jolt of validation and the tiny, tiny moment of finally being heard.

Character bleed is common. It’s worse when you spend more time playing the character, and worse still when you actively give a shit about them. Taika wonders, sometimes, what it must be like to play a character for years and years and years - like Michael Galvin on Shortland St, or all of those people on Law & Order or Grey’s. Korg did, for a bit, he supposes.

But for Flag - it’s different. It’s more intense. Emotional. Even exhausting.
