Top 10 Worst Album Covers of 1986 - Part 2/2
Part 1
5. April Wine - Walking Through Fire
Tumblr media
Again, do I need to say anything here? Nice cropping job guys, you couldn't even align the fire to be with the corners properly? What a joke. I don't know if it would be better if the guitar was in the foreground, or was at the very least more visible in the fire part. Honestly, I think the only reason this isn't number one, is because it's kind of funny, and I can see this working somewhat, but mostly because it's funny.
4. Ozzy Osbourne - The Ultimate Sin
Tumblr media
What isn't funny is seeing a horrid mutation of Ozzy Osbourne and one of the Jim Henson company's creatures. The ultimate sin, truly is playing God with life. Shou Tucker bastard.
3. The Rolling Stones - Dirty Work
Tumblr media
Here's another one I inducted into the Wall of Infamy, this time in 2022. I reiterate, this is the kind of outfits you would see on a bad sketch comedy show making fun of the 80s. Three blindingly hot pinks, a tacky yelow and orange suit, and a blue suit that blends in with the floor, this is what one of the most iconic bands of the 60s we're doing in the 80s. I'd say "How the mighty have fallen", but compared to other bands that have become fallen titans, frankly The Stones are doing great by those standards.
2. Raven - The Pack is Back
Tumblr media
Oh boy, when I think of "Bad 80s album covers" this is along the lines of something I think about. Cheesy, ridiculous, mildly homo-erotic, this checks all the boxes. Three muscular men bursting out of lockers in… sporting gear? I dunno what sport would ask anyone to wear what the two guys on each end are wearing… not even cheerleading (Yes Cheerleading is a sport, shut up!). You'll also notice the the guys are each coming out of two different lockers, implying the broke the walls in the first locker, which I'd be more inclined to believe if there was any indication of that, like some rubble, or something. This is "bad 80s Album Cover" to the letter, so why isn't it number one? Because…
1. The Human League - Crash
Tumblr media
I… want to state that, I can always understand why. The why behind certain choices is something I can see. Why did the Human League make this album cover? Because this was a last minute substitution for their original plans for an album cover. They wanted something better, but the photographer they had hired wanted one of the women to do a pose she deemed inapporpriate, and they got into an argument, and the photographer refused to work with the band, didn't even give them a refund. The "Why", I understand, it's the "What" that I don't. At some point, I feel like evryone just gave up on the album, but they didn't want to make that obvious, so they threw something together just to say they put an album cover together. At this point, I probably would have given them more credit if they just had a blank canvas with the album title on it, or even just looked for old photographs of the band in concert or for publicity shoots.
Honourable Mentions:
Tumblr media
Hüsker Dü - Candy Apple Grey; It looks like a fossil... I wish this was Cool Dragon Grey. What does that look like? A fossil... but it's not as ugly. (Managed to squeeze a Simpsons reference on this blog, quota met)
Felt - Forever Breathes the Lonely Word; Does this break the rule of thirds?
Bob Dylan - Knocked Out Loaded; I think I saw this on a "worst album covers" list once... I don't get it, but okay.
The Beach Boys - Made in U.S.A.; Of course it was, it's hideous. Was that joke too easy?
38 Special - Strength in Numbers; Anyone else craving Macaroni?
Daryl Hall - Three Hearts in the Happy Ending Machine; This is like that David Crosby album cover... except worse.
Yanni - Keys to Imagination; What the Fu-
Black Sabbath - Seventh Star; This was intended to be a Toni Iommi solo project... the cover would not be here if it was released as a solo project.

Top 10 Worst Album Covers of 1986 - Part 1/2
I've been doing the worst album covers list at the end of the year for a couple years now, and I do this because I love looking at and talking about album covers. The Album Cover is one of my all time favourite forms of art, and many would argue that it is such an integral piece to the album listening experience. So, it made me wonder, why don't I go back and really explore the album covers of years previous, let's pick a random year and look at some of the absolute worst album covers that the year has to offer. Maybe I'll also do a best list, I dunno, but let's start with 1986, why? Because the 80s are remembered as one of the best decades for music, and yeah the music was pretty great, but some of the album covers… nah. So, let's enjoy this blast from the past, this is the top ten worst album covers of 1986.
10. Europe - The Final Countdown
Tumblr media
I know I've already brought this cover up when I inducted it into the Album Cover Wall of Infamy in 2021. It's just a ridiculous image. It's the band members in the Phantom Zone, it's a bunch of trading cards falling to Earth, it's dumb, and not the fun dumb either, it's just straight up dumb. I think the key difference between something being "fun Dumb" and being "Dumb" is entertainment value, and frankly this image is kinda boring. This album cover is dumb and boring, sounds like a lot of Hair Metal acts now that I think about it.
9. Pet Shop Boys - Please
Tumblr media
No, you do not need to increase the webpage's zoom, that really is how tiny they made the image. I guess this made sense back in the days of vinyl, when the record sleeves were huge compared to casette's and CDs, and since vinyl has made a comeback I guess I shouldn't be surprised if anyone disagrees with me. I still don't get why you would do this, when you have all this space to work with, you stick a tiny image in the center and fill the remaining space with a solid colour. Why not just have the full photo be the album cover?
8. John Fogerty - Eye of the Zombie
Tumblr media
First of all, that isn't a zombie. That is, judging by the nose and the eyes, a cat person. Okay, let's assume that the term "Zombie" is being used as an umbrella term, like "Fae" was. Fae used to refer to all kinds of magical creatures, so maybe the same idea is being used for "Zombie"? Except that's stupid, especially by 1986, when the previous year saw the release of George A Romero's Day of the Dead. Secondly, Zombie or not, get the Hell away from me, take a step back, I do not want your face close to mine.
7. UB40 - Rat in the Kitchen
Tumblr media
I can't tell what I'm supposed to be more disgusted by, the giant radioactive rat, or the skinny cheese man climbing the walls. Also, great job putting the band name on the album cover twice guys.
6. Jean-Michel Jarre - Rendez-vous
Tumblr media
I don't think I need to say anything with this one. You guys remember that ASDF movie sketch? Like, it's not only an incomplete Earth, it's an incomplete face, and it's kinda disturbing. There is one question I have though; Who is this Granger person?
Well, let me talk a bit about Michel Granger, a French Artist from Roanne. He actually did a lot of the covers for this guy, and… a lot of them are really good. 1976's Oxygène, 1978's Équinoxe, 1993's Chronologie. Notice how none of the examples of good album covers came from the 80s, and that's because for most of the 80s, the album covers were not done by Michel Granger, as far as my research brought me, this was the only one… and that's just kinda… sad.
Part 2 here!

Album Cover Wall (Hall) of Fame Winter 2024 Inductees - Day 1
Minor thing before we begin, doing 25 whole album covers was... a lot, so I decided from now on (Since we're over 200 covers anyway), I'll just induct 10 each season. So I'm going to induct 5 covers today, and five others later this month.
Okay, with that said, let's get to the album covers.

1. Smash Song Hits by Rodgers & Hart
Tumblr media
2. The Rarity of Experience - Chris Forsyth

Top 10 Best Album covers of 2023 - Part 2 of 2
Part 1 Here
#5. Ludmilla - Vilã
Tumblr media
Look, as much as I love the elegant look of Aymui Hamasaki's album cover, Ludmilla's red and black cover for Vilã just intrigues me more. Okay, I'm a bit of a simp, shut up.
#4. The View - Exorcism of Youth
Tumblr media
On the topic of Red and Black, The View give us an absolutely fantastic album cover with great contrast and pleasing colours. The red sky offset by the Cooler blue water below, everything in silhouette, it is a very well made album cover. Props to the artist for this one.
#3. Lucinda Williams - Stories From a Rock n Roll Heart
Tumblr media
MM-HMM, ROCK IT!
Dolly went with a glamourous side of Rock, which makes sense, Dolly is a glamourous woman, but Lucinda goes for a classier, more down to earth image. Rock and Roll has room for both aesthetics, but if I have to pick my favourite, I'm sorry but glamour isn't my thing.
#2. Raye - My 21st Century Blues
Tumblr media
This is the kind of album cover that would have easily grabbed the number one spot. I love images that almost tell a story within themselves. This one reminding me of last year's winner "Everything I Didn't Say", and the hands poking out of the big pile of musical instruments is a nice touch, like multiple people are trying to claw out. I guess what keeps this from being number one, personally I think it could be stronger, like instead of musical instruments the pile could be full of other things that represent the ills of the 21st century, or it could've harkened back to the album covers of Robert Johnson or Lead Belly. It's a great image, but I wish it was stronger.
#1. Sarah & The Safe Word - The Book of Broken Glass
Tumblr media
This album cover, it almost feels like it was specifically made for me. It's gothy, almost evoking images of Poe stories. Yet the colours are not too dark or muted, it almost does look like this album cover could be remade with stained glass, evoking imaged of gothic churches. I mean, I can't really say anything more about this cover than it's Beautiful.
Makes me really want another Aurelio Voltaire album just to talk about the cover art.
Honourable Mentions:
Tumblr media
McKinley Dixon - Beloved! Paradise! Jazz!? - Stylish illustrations always count for something.
Kesha - Gag Order - I would feel uncomfortable putting this on the list proper, Kesha's been through a lot so it wouldn't seem fair to brush it off though.
Jen Cloher - I Am the River, the River is Me - I imagine that feels good.
Taylor Swift - Speak Now (Taylor's Version) - Credit where it's due, that is a great cover. Not inviting the Swifties though, y'all saty away from me.
Ashnikko - Weedkiller - I almost have to applaud this one for not being Demidevil.
Yaeji - With a Hammer - Crash Thompson, I think Lil' Sweetie has competition.
Kamelot - The Awakening - I think we're done with power metal covers for a good while.
Joff Bush - Bluey: Dance Mode - Throwing a bone to Bluey Fans, to be fair it is pretty colourful.
Rebecca Black - Let Her Burn - ...I'm not touching this until everyone apologizes to her.
IVE - I've Ive - The graphic designer in me loves this, the Writer in me hates this.

Top 10 Best Album Covers of 2023 - Part 1 of 2
I'll be honest, ranking 2023's worst album covers was pretty easy, for the most part. Then again, that is usually the easy list to rank, and I would say that the Best list is usually difficult to rank, these lists are usually difficult to explain. I don't remember 2022's best list being very difficult to rank, yet 2023's was. Maybe I just wasn't looking in the right places, but the line up of 2023's album covers was pretty... meh? Like nothing really stood out to me, and even the ones that did... honestly I could mostly rearrange the ranking of this list and feel like most of them are in the right place. Take these rankings with a grain of salt because, with a couple of exceptions, I'm not particularly "wowed" this year.
Still, there are some great album covers this year, may as well talk about them.
#10. Yes - Mirror to the Sky
Tumblr media
I think this is the resident, "Yep this is pretty standard for the association" entry of these lists for 2022. 2020's best list had Unleash The Archers rank at number three, with their cover being a power metal album cover, 2021 had two other power metal covers compete for the number 2 spot, and 2022 had Scorpions rank at number 10 on the worst list, as the Scorpions are pretty well known for bad album covers.
For a prog rock album, this is pretty... well, pretty. The cosmic blues and curved rock formations make this a visually pleasing piece of cover art, it's no Relayer, but it's pretty nice, and fits in with the rest of Roger Dean's fantastic artwork.
#9. Lana Del Rey - Did You Know That There's a Tunnel Under Ocean Blvd.
Tumblr media
Long title aside, I think this is the requisite "Throwback" album cover. The cover that evokes aesthetics and vibes from album covers of previous eras. It kind of gives me Miles Davis vibes, specifically "Kind of Blue". What can I say, I just love when covers evoke the past in a classy way like this.
#8. Dolly Parton - Rockstar
Tumblr media
Mm-hmm... ROCK IT QUEEN!
#7. Meet Me at The Altar - Past // Present // Future
Tumblr media
Honestly, I may just be putting this one on the list because, it fills me with hope that pop punk isn't dead. After Machine Gun Kelly grifted into rock and roll, The Offspring released that awful album in 2021 and Green Day released an equally awful album prior to that, seeing this album cover makes me hope that one of my favourite genres is not dead.
Also, love the hair.
#6. Ayumi Hamasaki - Remember You
Tumblr media
Elegant, classy, long flowing black dress... I'm sorry what is there about this album cover that is not for me to love?

Top 10 Worst Album Covers of 2023 - Part 2/2
Part 1
#5. Lordi - Screem Writers Guild
Tumblr media
You know, one of the key differences between drawing for illustration and for animation, is that animation does not require a whole lot of detail, especially on characters because that is just more stuff that has to move and more time spent on superfluous details. Illustration allows you get more detailed… but this may just be too detailed.
Also, I get the pun, but it still bothers me "Screem" is misspelled.
#4. Various Artists - A Very Metal Christmas
Tumblr media
I'm sorry, but you cannot make Christmas a "badass" holiday.
#3. Dungeon Wolf - The White Elf
Tumblr media
The sad thing is… the last time Dungeon Wolf had an album cover on this list, was an improvement. It was disgusting as Hell, but it was at least competently put together, I mean… do I even need to explain why this is awful? It should be pretty obvious right? Then again I thought it would be pretty obvious to not take influence for your album cover from Adema's "Topple the Giants" and Louis Prima's "The Call of the Wildest". It's got a frame and everything too, it's like the most basic ass photoshop job ever, I could have done this when I was learning to use Photoshop in High School. The worst thing is, I'm pretty sure it's intentional, I'm fairly certain that the guys behind Dungeon Wolf just want attention and will try to get it in anyway that doesn't involve putting in any actual effort. Congrats, you got your consolation prize, your participation trophy, bronze medal, you reached third place again, even your practically offensive album cover wasn't bad enough to be number one, but to be number one means you would actually have to try, put genuine effort into what you do.
I doubt this is the last we'll see of Dungeon Wolf, but we can hope, right?
#2. Willie Nelson - Bluegrass
Tumblr media
I know it is… wrong to speak ill of our patron saint of country and folk music Willie Nelson, but my autistic ass just wants him to back the Hell up. I can get the blue tinting, the weird effect on the edge, I can buy all that, I can vibe with that, but I don't want an old man getting so close in my face I can hear him breathing, frankly I don't really want anyone that close to my face without my consent. Willie, please, back up!
#1. Parannoul - After the Magic
Tumblr media
There is thought that goes into ranking these lists. I really do have to think about what the intent behind the album cover is, if it's funny bad or just normal bad, sometimes I even have to ask if I actually hate the image or if I'm just attaching something around the album to the actual album artwork. However, something I do have to think about is, "Can I really argue that this is the 'worst' album cover", like I have to justify this to myself before I justify it to you. I mention all of this because, as soon as I laid eyes on this album cover, this bright ass photo with a television static filter placed over it, this eye-burning eye-sore of an album cover, I knew this immediately had to have the number one spot. There are more boring album covers, album covers that are lazier, more offensive, uglier, grosser, sillier, album covers that actually make me uncomfortable to look at, but this album cover is just the least good. There it is, worst album cover of the year.
Honourable Mentions:
Tumblr media
Melanie Martinez - Portals; You know, I think even Marilyn Manson was done with this schtick at one point.
Roger Waters - The Dark Side of the Moon Redux; Obviously, the best way to improve one of the greatest album covers of all time is to shrink it down and put in something's eye, clearly.
Sufjan Stevens - Javelin; This would have been on the list if I wanted to have a three-way tie on the list.
Flume - Arrived Anxious, Left Bored; This album cover is a mood and I hate it.
Tim Hecker - No Highs; It was between this and the Foo Fighters cover.
U2 - Songs of Surrender; Come on guys... You're better than this.
Veil of Light - Sundancing; Okay, honestly, I hate pastels. Not enough of a reason to put it on the list proper, but I hate pastels.
Fairly Odd Bops; This was on the list before I remembered that Dungeon Wolf did a thing.
Everything But The Girl - Fuse; I'm sorry, F U S and E do not make shadows that look remotely like E B T or G.
Haken - Fauna; I'll admit, I kinda like this one, but it's so silly. It's the kind of bad that loops around and becomes good.

Top 10 Worst Album Covers of 2023 - Part 1/2
Happy New Years! It's time again, the time were I judge books, or in this case albums, by their covers. Okay, that is a bit harsh, but the album cover is an important part of the music listening experience, I mean so much about Pink Floyd's "The Wall" and it's symbolism would be lost if not for the incredible art hidden beneath the fold of the brick wall album cover, Tuomas Holopainen's Scrooge McDuck album would not feel as complete if it did not have a beautiful Don Rosa piece as it's cover, Charli XCX's "how i'm feeling now" was such a perfect capture of the mood of 2020.
I love looking at album covers, and I love talking about them, especially the bad ones, because I love learning from bad art. This is all this list really is, looking at some bad art and learning from it, so without further ado, here is the top 10 worst album covers of 2023.
#10. Miss Grit - Follow the Cyborg
Tumblr media
In 2021 I put the cover for "The Art of Losing" by The Achoress at number 8 on the worst list. It was a probably unintentionally phalic piece of art that, quite frankly made me chuckle. I mention it because, again I'm fairly certain any phallic imagery was not intended in that piece, though I am not one-hundred percent certain. This cover on the other hand… I mean…
I guess the idea is that there is a recharge port in the mouth, but um… I can't help but look at this and think, "Yeah, they knew exactly what they were doing", it's not even that's it too much or distasteful really, it's just… I mean I'm fairly certain most sites would have this flagged as inappropriate content.
#9. Queens of the Stone Age - In Times New Roman...
Tumblr media
A good part of this entry is simply due to the fact that I just can't fricking see anything, I can vaguely make out a figure, but for the most part it may as well just look like Metallica's Black Album. The other part of this is that, when I can see what's on the cover, I still can't really make out what it is, it's like a biker with a wolf coming out of his head, and three hands caressing him… this is reminding me a little bit of that Offspring album from 2021.
#8. Fall Out Boy - So Much (for) Stardust
Tumblr media
Oh, I'm probably not gonna make a lot of fans for this pick, but I gotta be honest, this album cover is bad. You remember when 30 Seconds to Mars released America, and they let you make your own version of that album's cover? Then people immediately began making it a massive joke? Well, Fall Out Boy did the same thing letting you put your own image on the cover. It really does feel like they just did this so they could make a meme. The image itself isn't even that good, it's a dog and some bubbles… that's it. Thankfully, it isn't the worst offender for a band who should know better.
#7. Foo Fighters - But Here We Are
Tumblr media
That honour goes to the Foo Fighters, who last year, released an awful, just plain awful horror movie, and this year gave us an album that has quite literally, next to nothing on the cover. You know, when The Beatles did their album cover with nothing, they had an idea behind it, but this isn't even nothing, there is vaguely something in the distance, but it's so faded that it may as well be nothing. Honestly, what has it been with the Foo Fighters and their album covers as of late? Oh well, I guess I'll see them next time.
#6. Swiss Army Wife - Medium Gnarly & Anti-Flag - Lies They Tell Our Children
Tumblr media Tumblr media
And here is our yearly tie and yearly entry for "Too much crap on the canvas" bad album cover. I think if I had to pick a "Worse" one I'd have to pick "Lies They Tell Our Children", it's just incohesive and full of random crap, I can at least make out some things on the Medium Gnarly cover, I mean it's still a jumbled mess but I can make out some things. I really do hate this kind of "collage with no rhyme nor reason" aesthetics, they just, are not fun to look at. If I wanted to stare at an absolute mess, I'd take a look at my city's downtown area.

Album Cover Wall of Infamy 2023 - Day 25
Tumblr media
Hung For the Holidays - William Hung
Merry Christmas everyone, and as per the usual for the end of the Wall of Infamy, we're taking a look at the worst album cover of the bunch, this is the second time in a row that the cover was for an album that was Christmas related.
This cover is also the most difficult to talk about because... I mean just look at it. I'd say this looks like a South Park joke, but let's be real, South Park puts more effort into their style, this looks like a show that's making fun of South Park.
I mean, I doubt it would be that difficult to get the man in a room with a Christmas tree and some wrapped presents, so this was a deliberate choice to make the album cover look like an MS Paint creation. It doesn't even really evoke the feelings of Christmas, like I don't feel warmth, cheer or goodwill looking at this, at least not in the Christmas Spirit sense of the words.
Everything is almost perfectly straight, Will's head is too big for his body making him look like a bobblehead, the flames in the fire place may as well have been copy/pasted, the couch looks way too long, you can see why this is on the Wall of Infamy right?
Merry Christmas to all, and I'll see you with the worst album covers of 2023.

Album Cover Wall of Infamy 2023 - Day 24
Tumblr media
Rat On! - Swamp Dogg
Come on, you knew I had to induct one of Swamp Dogg's album covers at some point, and I think wall of infamy inductee number 99 is a perfect time to induct such infamous, and hilarious, album covers.
I mean what isn't hilarious about this cover, the obviously drawn on smile of the rat, Swamp Dogg punching the "P" like a Mario Block. The goofy in and of itself idea, come on, this album cover is one of those few that is so bad, but so funny, I actually kind of love it.
Unlike the album cover I always inevitably save for Christmas Day, which is usually the one of the batch I dislike the most. Let's have some fun while it lasts everyone.

Album Cover Wall of Infamy 2023 - Day 23
Tumblr media
Front to Back - Wasnatch
You know... sometimes you just can't really add anything new to a discussion, the best jokes you can make we're already made, anything else you can add is just stating the obvious.
Like... what do I say about it? Specifically, what do I say about that has not already been said?
This is the weirdest sex position I've ever seen.

Album Cover Wall of Infamy 2023 - Day 22
Tumblr media
Drink From the Waters of War - KeyDragon
You know, I'm perfectly fine with pencil crayons as an artistic choice, but like... the art needs to be good enough for you to get away with using them, and this art is...
Like I struggle with identifying perspective in art, and even I can tell you that something is off here, some of the colour is faded, like those green hills look as white as the mountain in the background, and why the Hell is that castle on just a straight chunk of mountain? Like that is just cheap.
Also is the blood in the water meant to be going down a waterfall, or what?

Album Cover Wall of Infamy 2023 - Day 21
Tumblr media
Terrestrial Dying - Denet
I'm sorry, I try to find the best quality image I can for this blog, but sometimes that is next to impossible. Still, despite the not-so-good resolution, I can still sorta make out this one.
I mean it's someone's soul leaving their body and following a giant mushroom. That is clearly what it is, yeah? Or maybe it's someone being abducted by aliens in a dream? No, that's a giant mushroom, or a fish with a large willy?
That's an image I should apologize for putting in your heads.

Album Cover Wall of Infamy 2023 - Day 20
Tumblr media
Wild Wild West Original Motion Picture Score
Well, I seem to always find a soundtrack album to squeeze onto this wall, I may as well put another on here.
You know for a "Wild West" themed movie, it seemed to have a lot more steampunk to it, and it just confuses me so much more on this album cover, like why is there a steampunk transformer in the background? Like I get it's part of the movie, but like... why?
Add in out two leads doing some of the most generic action movie poses ever and you have a... really boring soundtrack cover with a background encased in tree sap.

Album Cover Wall of Infamy 2023 - Day 19
Tumblr media
Arena - Todd Rundgren
Ooh, this one. So, Mr. Rundgren here is clearly jumping into a crowd, probably to crowd surf or enter a mosh pit, but uh... the angle of the shot, an the fact he's only wearing boxer shorts makes it look like he's gonna um... teabag someone. I mean there are only two hands up in the air, way too far apart to be one person granted, but for a raucous crowd that he is jumping into, why are their only two hands up?
Todd Rundgren is about to go full Halo victor on his crowd, drop a pair of Liptons, the way this angle is shot, it kinda looks like he's about to drop his nuts on your face, you the person who is looking at this album cover.
Gross.
