I agree with you, Jim is the protagonist of the film while Silver is the antagonist. There is no hero or villain in the film, just shades of grey. probably not 50, but close to. One of the many reasons why this is my favourite disney film.

i was tossing up between him and scar from the lion king. i ultimatly chose silver because i love treasure planet better. he is the anti-villain you cant help but love. his constant battle with his love for flint’s treasure and his love for jim make him such an interesting character to watch. " Now, you listen to me, James Hawkins. You got the makings of greatness in you, but you got to take the helm and chart your own course. Stick to it, no matter the squalls! And when the time comes you get the chance to really test the cut of your sails, and show what you’re made of! Well, I hope I’m there, catching some of the light coming off you that day.”
