Arya’s Appearance Threw Out The Asoiaf Books:
Book 1:
Arya is 9 during this book. Her hair is shorter than Tommens so around shoulder length. She has lustreless brown hair and a long solemn face. She is skinny and small. She had scabbed knees. She has dark grey eyes like Jon.She wears her riding leathers on the way south but presumably wears northern dresses at Winterfell. Her hair is normally tangled and her riding leathers are normally dirty.Arya gets a rash on her arms from the poisonous flowers. She has bruises dark and fading on her shoulders from playing. She is compared to Lyanna by Ned who had a wild beauty when she was older. She is left handed. Her feet are scuffed from balancing. She gets bruises from her training with Syrio. Her hands are covered in half healed scratches from catching cats and both knees are scabbed over where she had scraped them raw in tumbles. She gets mistaken for a ragged boy because of her appearance while chasing cats(She is bear foot, dirty her hair tangled and is wearing a jerkin that was ripped by cats and roughspun pants hacked above her knees). Her clothes get even more dirty in tunnels so she has to clean them in the sea before putting them back on.She escapes the red keep with her heavy woolen cloak hiding needle, wooden sword and the bundle of clothes under her arm ( a velvet skirt, silk tunic, some small clothes, silver baby bracelet and a dress her mother embroidered for her) with two prayer candles shoved up her sleeves. Possibly minor burns from the hot wax melting onto the knuckles of her right hand. Most likely becomes skinner and dirtier during her time in flee bottom. The only things she is left with are the clothes on her back, her cloak and swords by the end of the book. She falls bursting her scraped knee open, smashes her finger against the packed earth the thumb on her left hand was covered in blood along with her knee, the thumbnail had fallen off in the fall.Arya’s hair is matted and tangled.

There’s just so much dishonest bothsidesing in the discourse about Arya and Sansa in this fandom.

And then a hand shot out of the press and closed round her arm like a wolf trap, so hard that Needle went flying from her hand. Arya was wrenched off her feet. She would have fallen if he hadn’t held her up, as easy as if she were a doll. A face pressed close to hers, long black hair and tangled beard and rotten teeth. “Don’t look!” a thick voice snarled at her.“
I … I … I … ” Arya sobbed. The old man shook her so hard her teeth rattled. “Shut your mouth and close your eyes, boy.” Dimly, as if from far away, she heard a … a noise … a soft sighing sound, as if a million people had let out their breath at once.

You’ve got to go. They’ll kill you for what you did to Joffrey. Go on… run. Go! Leave now! Go!

These three deserve their own page! Good thing that she learned stealthiness from the cat ;)

‘’ She stood on the end of the dock, pale and goosefleshed and shivering in the fog. In her hand, Needle seemed to whisper to her. Stick them with the pointy end, it said, and, don’t tell Sansa! Mikken’s mark was on the blade.
It’s just a sword. If she needed a sword, there were a hundred under the temple. Needle was too small to be a proper sword, it was hardly more than a toy. She’d been a stupid little girl when Jon had it made for her. “It’s just a sword,” she said, aloud this time …
… but it wasn’t.
Needle was Robb and Bran and Rickon, her mother and her father, even Sansa. Needle was Winterfell’s grey walls, and the laughter of its people. Needle was the summer snows, Old Nan’s stories, the heart tree with its red leaves and scary face, the warm earthy smell of the glass gardens, the sound of the north wind rattling the shutters of her room. Needle was Jon Snow’s smile.
He used to mess my hair and call me “little sister,” she remembered, and suddenly there were tears in her eyes.’‘

I think that Arya’s riveland’s chapters are depressing too but I also think that’s the point. GRRM makes them hard to read because we see through her young eyes the cost of The Game that the powerful lords and ladies like to play at, which is why readers trend to ignore her narrative=the smallfolk’s suffering and plight. She’s one of the only nobleborn’s POV who genuinely cares about this issues (like Jon, Brienne and Dany) and doesn’t just happily lives off of feudal taxes.
Oh I agree that they are very important to the themes of the series and just because they’re depressing doesn’t mean they shouldn’t be read or analyzed. I think for me it upset me because when I was a young teen on my initial read of the series I felt like she kept ‘just missing’ reuniting with her mother and brother. But I don’t think the series would be anywhere near as good without them. I shouldn’t have said I ‘hated’ that arc because that implies I think it’s unimportant or meaningless, and it’s definitely not just ‘grimdark for the sake of grimdark’ but actual social commentary.
Edit to add: for example I hated writing certain parts of Haunt/Hunt and found it very emotionally exhausting but that doesn’t mean I think those plot points are unnecessary.
