I don’t know why but growing up I was always sad about Mousefur not having kits for some reason. So I had a head canon that she fell in love with Tornear and had Shrewkit and Spiderkit but knowing that she would fall behind on her warrior duties she gave them to Ferncloud who lost her kits while kitting.

She gained Spiderpaw as an apprentice and was happy that she could “raise” one of her sons, but when Shrewpaw died she was devastated that she didn’t know him as well as she knew Spiderpaw so when she arrived at the lake territories she decided to go into early retirement.

I say early because in the first book she was a “young warrior” and seems very spirited about her role in the clan that it doesn’t make much sense to go into early retirement even if it was to keep Longtail company. So she goes into early retirement to watch her final son from afar and gain a real relationship (romantic or platonic) with Longtail who understood her far more than her other clan mates.

Idk if it counts as an AU or a headcanon but I just played So Big So Small from Dear Evan Hanson and it reminded me of Mousefur and Shrewpaw in my story.

In my masters I was using Ice Age as a template for good story structure and character motivation and THIS IS WHY!!!

I think a lot about how in Ice Age 1 a huge theme is the slow but unstoppable advancement of the human species as they start to threaten previously unchallenged megafauna (hunting the pack of the antagonist sabertooth and killing Manny the mammoth’s family) and then in all the sequels they just fuckin disappear
