When you are alone and have a heart attack. What are you gonna do then?
Take a 2 minute break and read this:
Let's say it's 5:25 pm and you're driving home after an unusually hard day's work.
You are really tired and frustrated. All of a sudden your chest pains. They are starting to radiate in the arm and jaw. It feels like being stabbed in the chest and heart. You're only a few miles away from the nearest hospital or home.
Unfortunately you don't know if you can make it..
Maybe you've taken CPR training, but the person running the course hasn't told you how to help yourself.
How do you survive a heart attack when you're alone when it happens? A person who is feeling weak and whose heart is beating hard has only about 10 seconds before losing consciousness.
1. But you can help yourself by coughing repeatedly and very strongly! Deep breaths before every cough. Coughing should be repeated every second until you arrive at the hospital or until your heart starts to beat normally.
2. Deep breathing gives oxygen to your lungs and coughing movements boost the heart and blood circulation. Heart pressure also helps to restore a normal heartbeat. Here's how cardiac arrest victims can make it to the hospital for the right treatment
3. Cardiologists say if someone gets this message and passes it on to 10 people, we can expect to save at least one life.
4. FOR WOMEN: You should know that women have additional and different symptoms. Rarely have crushing chest pain or pain in the arms. Often have indigestion and tightness across the back at the bra line plus sudden fatigue.

one of the reasons i love law is that we have proof that he was always a creepy fucker. there's that panel from his early life that's a class photo for his elementary school where he's holding up a dead frog to the distress of his classmates. he's just Like That. sure a lot of horrible shit happened, but he was already weird and morbid.

cannot stress enough that his onscreen acts so far have been in no particular order: flipping kidd off, threatening to murder kidd for bossing him around, juggling a disembodied head around for way longer than necessary, act like a complete freak while asking drake how many people he's killed, breaking multiple laws by recruiting an escaped slave onto his crew, have bepo finish a fight he got bored with, and watching luffy cause an international incident with the manic smile of someone obviously smacked on the highest quality shit he could find on sabaody archipelago. unambiguously and undeniably, he is the people's princess.

honestly it warms my heart a little how much laws gone through and how he's still a little nerd boy who loves germa comics and ninjas and as a 26 year old ex warlord captain he's enchanted mid fight I just know he collects action figurines and I just know he'd play world of warcraft after his 19 hour shifts at the hospital and I just know hes sitting there at his work desk joining the call where his unemployed acquaintance luffy introduces him to the rest of the psychos I just know he volunteers at orphanages and pet shelters and he's got a little journal where he notes down lines from books he thinks corazon would enjoy

Okay but why does Law save Jean Bart in Sabaody?
In retrospect, the moment works really well as foreshadowing to Law saving Luffy at the end of Marineford. Law, seemingly on a whim, saves a character from certain death, showing that he's more complex/kind than the 'surgeon of death' title implies.
But what was the reason at the time? Did Oda like Jean Bart's design/reference to the real privateer/reference to the Byron poem Beppo too much to abandon the character and Law was just a means to an end? Did he like how some historical pirates freed slaves for their crew and just want to include it somewhere in One Piece? Did he want fans to be intrigued by a member of the Worst Generation before fleshing them out? Did he want to make sure fans liked Law? Or did Oda, in the two months between Law's introduction (chapter 498) and saving Jean Bart (chapter 505), already figure out Law's importance to the story and intentionally include the moment as a hint to future events?? This haunts me man

There's so many terribly sad things about Law's backstory. The way he lost his whole family, how the government and ultra-wealthy damned his town and it's citizens to death for momentary personal gain, how he only escaped by hiding in a pile of corpses and how Corazon died trying to save him and ultimately also because Law unknowingly lead Vergo to him.
But honestly one of the most painful things to read in his backstory for me was this part;
Tumblr media
Because Law was a terminally ill kid with no chance for survival. He'd seen it again and again as people died all around him and as he lost everything. The death was quick in terms of how many years left to live but waiting for the inevitable felt so slow and it was more painful near the end. He'd already committed himself to the idea that he was going to die like that, and probably alone. In his head, he'd already killed himself off so many times in preparation for the outcome.
Tumblr media
But in spite of what he said, that he'd given up all hope and that he understood that there was no cure--deep down in Law's heart he really wanted to believe that somehow there was still the possibility and maybe this weird adult that's always spouting nonsense was right and could somehow find it. But, to admit aloud that he really did want to live would have broken him completely. He couldn't bear what it meant to admit that.
Tumblr media
Corazon was so well intentioned and only saw it from his mature adult perspective at first thinking all it would take was some old fashioned footwork and patience. But he was so naive and didn't realize that all he was doing was retraumatizing Law. Over and over and over again.
Tumblr media
Doctor after doctor making Law burst into so many tears by acting like his whole body was dirty and disgusting. Treating him like he wasn't even worth the time to look at, like he wasn't worth saving, like he wasn't even human; a lost cause.
Place after place completely rejecting him and telling him that there was nothing that could be done.
Tumblr media
Corazon dragging him to hospital after hospital promising him that things would be different this time and to just hang on a little bit longer and put his faith in him and believe all while Law screamed and cried to just please please give up already and to stop giving him false hope.
Tumblr media
It was so heartbreaking and tragic to read through this and see how painful it was for Law and how he just couldn't take one more fucking hospital-one more fucking doctor-one more fucking person rejecting him again. Telling him something that he already knew, that he couldn't be saved. And always throwing salt in his still-fresh and never healed wounds.
Law was (and still is) SO fragile, he already felt like he'd broken a thousand times and into a thousand pieces and just when he thought he couldn't break anymore, he would break again. It was like torture for him. He was just a child and the world had already been so sick to him, constantly twisting the knife and never letting up.
And it was also so sad to see Corazon getting angry on his behalf begging them to at least TRY to save this poor innocent child's life. Realizing how foolish and cruel people are when met with something they don't understand. And watching him realize what he was doing to Law and how naive and indelicate with his fragile heart he'd been.
Tumblr media
An extension of this is also that, despite everything, Corazon went to such great lengths to save Law's life--even at the cost of his own. Something Law still couldn't understand when we were introduced to him. He couldn't fathom why Corazon fought for him so hard when he had long given up on the idea of living, resigned to his fate.
Essentially, they were more like strangers, completely unrelated. Not even really knowing eachother for that long. And Law was always searching for the reason as to why he was saved. Wondering why it was him of all people still living and not Corazon.
Only to find the answer was the simplest one of all--for love.
Tumblr media
There was no greater rhyme or reason, no deeper meaning, either. No hidden agenda.
Tumblr media
It was just because...he loved him.

I dug around a bit to collect some information about Sakagami san's writing process. He said he was given a lot of liberty, which confirms my assumption that Oda wasn't involved in its writing as closely as the Ace novel (perhaps not at all, other than the small information provided in SBS.)
Apparently, Law had always been Sakagami san's favorite character and he was ready to say no if it were a different character. He contemplated about using first/third person for the narration, but decided to go with first person to match a flow similar to manga and to understand Law's Perspective. He said he liked Law more and more as he continued writing.
Tumblr media
It seems there's a story behind how he decided the names of the novel's original characters, but he didn't reveal it.
If anyone ever wondered, here's One Piece Novel Law author Sakagami Shusei grieving the loss of Polar Tang and the Heart pirates this day last year.

Probably the most powerful expression Oda drew on Law because how many times have we seen him so broken and desperate. That's a boy who lost everyone within a single night along with his faith in humanity - spilling out his heart in front of a total stranger just so he can somehow evade re-experiencing this pain:
Tumblr media
And this time it struck him worse . Now there's guilt along with grief because he brought the grim reaper to Cora himself.
Vergo is now dead and Doflamingo in Impel Down - but this isn't something you heal from in lifetime.
Tumblr media
Years after, same story. Oda struck the same wound again, took away his sword and hat while at it, then left him in salt water.

One way to guess which characters in one piece bathe frequently and who don't is how often we see them in different clothes lol
Tumblr media
How to say you bathe everyday without saying you bathe everyday.
