POWER: Teleportation
The movement of objects or elementary particles from one place to another, more or less instantaneously, without traveling through space. The common trigger for this ability is fear, resulting in many accidental teleportation with beginning witches who find themselves with this ability. Nora is able to teleport herself instantaneously anywhere within a five mile radius, but she must visualize where she is going and has to have been there before. If she is teleporting another person with her through physical contact, her distance is reduced to anywhere within a two mile radius. Using the ability too often can cause blackouts and blurred disorientation as well as an inability to teleport at all.

BACKSTORY:
Nora, for lack of a better term, is a spoiled princess. The only daughter of a Senator and his trophy wife in Washington, D.C., Nora was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and has been given practically anything that she has ever asked for. Sent only to the best daycares and preschool facilities, Nora was the young girl who demanded the attention and control of her peers and if it wasn’t given to her, well, she would find a way to make the spotlight hers. Very much so acting like an Angelica of the Rugrats kids to her peers, Nora wasn’t above being ruthless and mean to the other kids on the playground if it meant that she was the center of everything going on. Her parents, who tried to replace actual parenting skills with gifts in the form of toys and clothing were less than involved, usually rattling her off to her nanny of the time being since so many of them quit after having to raise the little terror that Nora was becoming. She had no concept of the word “no”.
As she grew older, her powers began to emerge much to the chagrin of her mother. She was a witch who had no active abilities and hoped that it would skip her daughter as well. She had never told her Senator husband about her lineage, which caused an interesting conversation to happen when Nora one day teleported from one side of the kitchen to the other. As the typical fashion of their parenting, rather than take a responsible role they shipped Nora off to her grandfather’s every summer since her powers made themselves apparent. To say that Nora was less than enthused to be spending her summer vacations doing a different kind of schooling would be an understatement. Simply put: Nora acted like a brat whenever she was with her grandfather. Her grandfather, on the other hand, was able to spit it right back to her. He was the atypical crotchety old man who would have rather spent his retirement in peace instead of teaching a thankless kid.
In all actuality, Nora enjoyed her times spent with her grandfather though she would never admit it. He was the first adult that actually gave her what she wanted: attention. Granted, it was more of him complaining about her attitude, but it was an adult who actually cared. She started to learn more about her witch lineage, and before long, it was time to send her off to begin her education at the Hale Institute. While there, she met somewhat of a rude awakening. She walked in, thinking that she was the princess but soon found that there were people who were smarter, who were stronger, and who were better than she was as a meek first year student. She still acts like she is better than others, mainly because that is the only way she knows how to interact with her peers. Deep down, she is just desperate for people to show her some sort of attention stemming from the neglect she received her entire childhood.

The ability to transport items from one location to another almost instantaneously. By first dematerializing in a flash of a green aura they will be shifted out of the plane they are on before returning to the plane re-materializing within a new location in the same matter. Sera’s ability is channeled through her hands, and typically cannot use her abilities to transport items that are larger than something she would be able to carry with her two hands. In order for her ability to work, she must say the item aloud. For example, opening her palm and saying “Candlestick!” will make the candlestick in front of her dematerialize and reform in her open palm. Advanced users can use this ability in a telekinetic-fashion and control where the item reforms, but Sera hasn’t mastered that yet and can only make the item reappear in her hand. Beyond the size limitations, Sera is able to use her ability continuously but the more she uses it, the more likely she is to have errors from exhaustion.

BACKSTORY:
A true southern princess, Sera DuBois is one of a kind. Born and raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Sera had high dreams of becoming a famous country singer one day. She grew up listening to live bands at the small tavern her family owned, singing along and even getting on stage some times with the bands that passed through and played on the stage. She was always surrounded by music, and learned how to play the guitar by the time she was eight. She was born the youngest of three girls, all buoyant girls with big smiles and a southern drawl in their voice that could melt anyone’s heart. All three were witches, a trait passed down from their mother who was a former Miss USA contestant representing the state of Tennessee. Sera idolized her mother and wanted to be just like her when she grew up. She got her singing abilities from her mother, who used them as her talent in the various pageants she participated in before settling down and having kids.
Sera, like her mother, entered in multiple pageants around the state and traveled around the country when she got older and the competitions got larger. She was quite good as a pageant queen, one of the rare sorts that was genuinely as nice and caring about people and the world around her like she dictated in her speeches and questionnaires she answered in competition. Sera was extremely friendly, spunky, funny, and engaging with everyone she met. She always said she’d never meet a stranger, a trait she still has to this day. She knew she was a witch from a young age, something her mother never hid from the girls, but she didn’t necessarily want that to be a part of her life; how many famous country singers are also witches? It just didn’t seem all that feasible, and so Sera really only learned enough about her magical background in order to control and contain it. Of course, under stress and pressure from pageants and working part time as a waitress in the family tavern, her magic would find itself popping up in very awkward and unexpected circumstances from time to time.
When Sera reached her senior year in high school, she was faced with a lot of decisions. Should she try and just move out on her own, hoping to strike lucky and become the famous country star she always dreamed of being? Or should she go on to pursue a higher education? She had planned on trying to launch her career on her own, but her parents, unbeknownst to her, decided to enroll her into the Hale Institute. Imagine her surprise when she received an acceptance letter for a school she never even applied for in the first place. At first she refused to go, but her parents made her a deal: as long as she completed the six year program, they would help her get settled in and do whatever it took to launch her music career. They had fostered enough connections in Nashville with the tavern, and so Sera begrudgingly accepted. Now in her final year, she’s counting down the days until he graduates and is able to start the life she’s dreamed of living every since she was a little girl.

POWER: Force Fields
The ability to create and control a magical barrier and shield using a great amount of concentrated force. The force field is blue in color and translucent, roughly the size of a large beach ball. It can surround about one person at a time, and can protect from any physical, tangible attacks (such as fireballs, knives, etc). The force field will last as long as Ashton is focused and able to exert the mental willpower necessary to do so. Creating force fields can be extremely mentally wearing and lengthy duration can cause nosebleeds, headaches, and falling unconscious.

BACKSTORY:
Ashton Collins hails from Madison, Georgia, a small town in the deep south - which, consequently, is where the old southern gentleman manners come from. As a child, his life was fairly normal. His father, Adam, and his mother, Nina, were very much in love - though he was a straight laced southern man, and she’d had a troubled past full of abandonment and abuse. While Adam opened his own veterinary practice, Nina had settled her dark past behind her and was a dental assistant. They settled together in a nice suburb and never desperately wanted for anything, and it was soon thereafter that Ashton was born. When Ashton turned two, his parents gave birth to a baby girl, though after a genetic heart issue, she died rather suddenly. Despaired, Ashton’s mother withdrew into a dark depression, one in which Ashton’s father was unable to reconcile. He left her and Ashton to fend for themselves when Ashton turned six, and it was within that year that Ashton discovered something wasn’t quite…. right with him. He was special, and somehow his mother had always known. Much to his surprise, she wasn’t exactly normal herself. She was a witch – and knew Adam had been bestowed the same gift.
Things were a little strange after that - going to public school and pretending to fit in, when Ashton knew he was anything but ordinary. He was always rather smart - testing well, working hard in academics, and maintaining a 4.0 gpa. He took up skateboarding and had a knack for drawing, but made it a point to ignore his powers as much as possible and fly under the radar. He didn’t want to be different, and even if he accepted it, he didn’t know his purpose for them. He never knew what to make of them, until the fire. It was the middle of the night on a summer evening when he smelled the smoke, saw the flames rolling from his neighbor's house. When he heard the screams, he didn’t even think. Ashton immediately sprang to action and ran next door, unsure of what would happen but that he could do something that they couldn’t. He stretched his powers and formed a force field over each of the family members, guiding them to the safety of their front lawn. The police and the fire department couldn’t make sense of how they escaped - they should’ve died. But Ashton saved their lives, and that's how he knew he could no longer hide his powers.
He and his mother enrolled him in the Hale Institute for the autumn following that summer, and though he was reluctant to change his life and leave his mother alone, he knew that he had to learn to control and use his powers for the greater good, even though he would rather be invisible and maintain a quiet life. He’s known for being the well mannered, normal, quiet guy who always opens doors and says thank you, though refusing to give up his skateboard. Ashton doesn’t want to be a hero, and he doesn’t want to be gifted. But he does want to understand himself to his full capacity, and he’ll do his best work until he does.

POWER: Time Manipulation
The ability to move through time and space into the past or the future. Users of this power can travel both into the past as well as the future, but time travel is extremely dangerous due to the consequences of changing things in the past or the information gained by visiting the future. At it’s current state, Esme is only able to travel backwards in time up to an hour at maximum. Time travel, in it’s essence, is a rare and often unused ability due to the consequences but can allow an upper hand in combat by going back in time a few moments and knowing the attacker’s plans. As one could expect, time travel is no easy feat and can cause Esme to have severe blackouts, nosebleeds, disorientation, and falling unconscious if she overextends herself by using her power too often or too rapidly.

BACKSTORY:
Esme Gallagher was the classic story of the daddy’s girl who lost her way. Like her twin brother Cassidy, she was given anything that she ever wanted. Not from her mother, who would rather pop pills and sip martinis all day, but from her father. Whereas he was cold, strict, and cruel to Cassidy, he was warm and endearing for Esme. She was his princess, and one day, she knew that she would rule over the neon light kingdom of Las Vegas. She had all the finest toys, the finest clothes, the best jewelry…things that young girls didn’t need, but always dreamed of having. As her father continued to spoiler her and teach her more about magic, the more she began to notice how harsh he was to her twin brother. Of course she felt bad, but she also felt like her brother brought it upon himself with how he could act from time to time. Esme knew that in order to get people to like her, she had to act like the perfect, doting little princess and so she played the role well.
She took a passive interest in learning about magic, but paid attention because she knew it pleased her father. She knew that her power was an extremely rare and powerful one, something that she was extremely proud of but also a little afraid of. She didn’t push the limits too often, simply because of how dangerous it could be. The older she got, the closer she grew to her father, and suddenly…he was gone. When the twins were sixteen and her father passed away, Esme felt like she lost a core piece of herself. Her father was her hero, her confidant, one of her best friends and suddenly he was gone. She knew it had to do something with the fact that he was using his magic to corrupt the Las Vegas casino circuit, which pushed her even further away from magic. Imagine her shock when, during the last will and testament, Esme and Cassidy were told that they had to enroll in an academy to learn more about magic and witchcraft in order to get any of the money left to them.
To say that Esme isn’t coping is a bit of an understatement. Ever since her father passed away, the perfect little princess image has been shattered. She blamed herself, primarily because she was unable to use her powers to go back and save her father from the stroke he had. She began to act out and partaking in some dangerous behaviors by staying out late in the casinos and bars before she left for the Hale Institute with her brother. Most recently, an alarming change in her life has been her growing involvement with Devil’s Spirit, the drug manufactured and passed around the Hale Institute by one Sebastien Phillips. She’s overly flirtatious, and is starting to build a less than favorable reputation within the student body. She still manages to maintain decent enough grades, but deep down she knows that she needs to talk to someone about the grief process she has been avoiding in order to try and put on a good face like everything's okay. It’s only a matter of time before her own personal feelings of grief catch up with her and cause a whirlwind of events.

POWER: Pain Absorption
The ability to take the pain away from an individual’s wound, taking it within oneself. It does not heal the injury, but neutralize one’s sensitivity to physical pain. Shipley is able to take the pain out of a target and take it within herself, feeling a reduced version of the pain (but still feeling it nonetheless) that results in taking the physical pain away from her intended. By channeling it through her hands, a warm glow emits around the area and instantly will begin to feel a calming sensation around the wound. This ability must be used in moderation, as too much pain absorption will cause it to become unbearable for Shipley from feeling the pain herself. Without proper control and moderation, Shipley could wind up physically harming herself from absorbing too much. Depending on the level of pain and the amount of injury that Shipley absorbs, she will need a “cool down” period before she can use her ability again to avoid overexertion that could end up being fatal to her.

BACKSTORY:
Shipley knew she was different ever since she was old enough to make a realization about what “different” meant. Born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Shipley was the only child of an extremely loving and compassionate couple. Neither were witches and to this day, no one is quite sure where Shipley’s magic came from. Shipley was a quiet child, but surrounded by love and adoration from her parents that allowed her to express herself any way that she wanted. Growing up, Shipley was highly artistic and spent a lot of time painting and drawing with anything she could get her hands on; crayons, water colors, markers, you name it. If it could make a marking, Shipley would find a way to use it and create something, even if it meant coloring all over the newly painted walls in the living room of their large two story townhouse. Her father was a psychiatrist and her mother was a physician’s assistant, both with a steady income to provide their child with whatever she wanted, in moderation of course.
Shipley discovered just how different she was one afternoon while she was working on a painting as her father repaired one of the light fixtures in their kitchen. As she worked, she suddenly heard a giant crash from the kitchen and abandoned her easel, running in and finding her father had fallen off of the ladder and landed on the light fixture. The bulbs had shattered all over her father’s back, and while he was still conscious and the wound wasn’t fatal by any means, he was in a lot of pain. He asked his daughter to go into the other room and call for help, wanting to keep his daughter away from all the blood and broken glass. Shipley, at the age of nine, went over and helped her father gain his footing again. It was then that her abilities activated for the first time, the warm glow pulsating from her hands as she absorbed the pain her father was feeling. She began to cry out, both out of fear over what was happening and due to the pain she was now feeling.
That night, her parents began to delve into research about what could have possibly happened. They knew something wasn’t quite normal, but that was okay. What was normalcy anyways? They began to discover documents and research findings on magic, things they never imagined could be real but having witnessed it with their own two eyes, knew that it must. They found a local coven and brought Shipley to them, who confirmed their suspicions; she was a witch. She began training after school with the coven, learning more about her abilities and what it meant to be a witch. She also took an interest in medical work, reflecting on her abilities to absorb the pain of individuals. Upon graduating high school, she went on to medical school and became a licensed nurse practitioner. Four years ago, she was contacted by the Hale Institute and offered the position as their Nurse. She’s made herself comfortable in New England now, caring deeply for all the students that inevitably come through her doors at one time or another in their seven years at the school and is one of the friendliest faculty members.

The ability to create a duplicate of oneself capable of staying active for a few minutes. The user’s clothing, as well as any objects they’re holding and powers are duplicated as well. The clones all have different, accentuated aspects of the original’s personality, causing complications for the user. Shawn can produce up to four clones at a time, typically ranging in higher levels of his emotional states of anger, sadness, fear, and joy. The clones are independent in their own right, but still follow the direction and demands of Shawn. If a clone dies, all the clones disappear and Shawn feels the pain that they experienced. He can sustain the four clones for up to five hours, but the longer they are around, the longer it will take for him to be able to use them again. He can only generate them one at a time and the personality they inhibit is random in order.

BACKSTORY:
Shawn Edwards is one of the most approachable and genuine individuals you will ever meet. With an infectious laugh and a charming demeanor, he’s always been a man who was known for his personality and having a few tricks up his sleeve. Born and raised in Portland, Oregon, his father was the owner of a bar that had been passed down from generation to generation. His mother was out of the picture, and Shawn never asked about it because he knew he didn’t want to know; he loved his dad, and if his mother was out of the picture, well, he didn’t want her there anyways. His father owned and managed a local bar on the outskirts of town, and as soon as he was thirteen years old, Shawn was slinging drinks and waiting tables just like the rest of the bar staff. He and his father lived in a small makeshift apartment above the bar. While it might not have been the best upbringing for a child, Shawn was constantly surrounded by good music and friendly banter.
His father was a witch, though had no active abilities of his own. He helped Shawn learn about his own, teaching him the limited things that he knew about magic. When Shawn began to learn about his ability of cloning, he started to use it to pull pranks on his dad around the house. You’d be surprised at what kind of a trouble a kid can get into when there are duplicates running around the house. It was like a twisted version of The Parent Trap; multiple little Shawn’s running around, confusing his dad. But all in all, it was a household full of love and happiness. The greatest thing that Shawn’s father taught him was to be strong and independent; it takes a lot to run a bar, especially with some of the unsavory characters that liked to inhibit their establishment from time to time. When Shawn was nineteen, his father suddenly took ill, which caused him to stick around and help pick up some of the extra load of work that came with taking care of the bar.
When Shawn turned twenty, his father’s illness took a drastic turn and unfortunately, he didn’t make it. In losing the only support system he had, Shawn was devastated. He kept the bar open, of course, doing his best to try and make sure that his father’s vision stayed fulfilled. Unfortunately there were far too many bills, and after three years of running and managing the bar and apartment above it, Shawn lost it and had to sell. Feeling like he had nowhere to go and nothing keeping him in Portland anymore, he contacted the Hale Institute and was soon hired as a professor for Power Combat and Control. He’s a very engaging and approachable teacher, someone who is passionate about the kids he works with and that the students all enjoy. He’s almost always got a smile on his face and a laugh resonating on the walls around him, but a lot of the time it’s there to mask the sadness he feels about losing his father and feeling like he disappointed the most important man in his life by having to sell their bar and home.

POWER: Transmogrification
The magical ability to change shape or form. This power is restricted to changing into inanimate objects and back, not to be confused with Shapeshifting (human transformations). Transmogrification allows the user to remain in the shape of an object for an extended duration of time and still have access to their senses of sight and hearing. Jenny is able to remain in this state for up to two hours undisturbed. If the item that she has shifted into is damaged, she will instantly revert back into her human form and sustain a similar injury herself. This can cause multiple dangers while being in a state of Transmogrification. She has to have a clear and concentrated visual on the object that she wants to turn into in order for her ability to manifest itself correctly. She cannot use her ability to turn into something larger than herself.

BACKSTORY:
Jenny Templeton is a a traditional southern girl who lived in the outskirts of Montgomery, Alabama. She was born the fifth child and the only daughter. When she was five, her mother passed away in a car crash, leaving Jenny to be raised by her older brothers and her father. Because of this, Jenny ended up being a big tomboy with a rambunctious spirit and a kind heart. She was always running around with bruises and scraped knees, pulling her hair up into a ponytail and running with the best of them. Add in the fact that you had a household full of witches, well, the messes tended to be larger and the accidental injuries tended to happen more frequently. But all that being said, Jenny became the sweet country girl that always was there to lend a helping hand and to speak up for the little guy. She spent more time outside in the fields surrounding their country home. She loved nature and spending her time outdoors, taking in the cool country air on summer nights.
It only made sense that she was extremely proficient in potion brewing and herbal magics. She learned all about magic from her older brothers and her father, mostly having fun experimenting with her powers and scaring them by turning into an object in their room and randomly shifting back when they thought they were alone. With an ability like Transmogrification, it’s impossible to not have a fun and pranking personality with all the opportunities that the ability gives you. When she was eighteen, she was one of the students recruited to be the first ever batch of students at the newly reopened Hale Institute of Higher Learning. Naturally she jumped at the opportunity, especially since her brothers had all grown up and moved out on their own and having their own lives. Besides, being within the first graduating class of the newly reopened magical academy was an exciting adventure waiting to happen in and of itself.
Of course, Hale Institute had some issues within its first couple years that were ironed out while Jenny was attending. Being in the first graduating class was something that was both an honor and something that was a little terrifying since the building had been vacant for so long and the stories of why it was closed in the first place was looming on everyone’s mind. Regardless, she graduated after six wonderful years of knowledge and exploration. After she graduated, she went back to their family home in Montgomery. She stayed with him in the last few years of his life, helping keep up with the house and the land. However, when he passed, she knew that her life was needing to be elsewhere. The house and the land went to her eldest brother and his family, and on a whim, Jenny applied for a teaching position at the Hale Institute. She’s been there for the past two years, still getting adjusted to being referred to as “Miss Templeton”. She’s still as much of a tomboy as ever, extremely outgoing and friendly to everyone.

The ability to control and manipulate technology. It is a unique gift that allows the caster the chance or change to disable alarms, computers, cars, and other forms of technology to their bidding. At this stage, Connor must have physical contact with the intended technology item to manipulate. He is able to mentally hack into cell phones and computers to do his bidding, as well as rewire machine programming. He can also disable electrical outlets and lighting systems as long as he’s able to have physical contact with the outlet or light switch. Using the ability too much can cause “shocks” to the brain which can lead to blackouts or falling unconscious.

BACKSTORY:
Growing up in a ranch style home outside of Missoula, Montana left Connor to his own devices a lot of the time. His father was a witch who kept the secret from his mother until they had Connor and he began to show his own signs of magic, which resulted in his mother leaving them and never returning. Connor doesn’t have many memories of the woman, just a few photographs and the small stories that his father has said but always managed to somehow change the subject if he asked about it. Connor helped his father out on the farm from time to time, but spent more time inside playing on his computer and playing different video games. It only made sense that his ability would naturally flourish in this state. He used his abilities to change the game in his favor. Some would call it cheating, Connor would call it being resourceful. It was only a matter of time before he would end up using his powers and taking a couple steps too far.
It really all started off as boredom one afternoon while he was surfing the web while he was in high school. He was doing a school report on security systems online and before he knew it, he was using his abilities to hack into a governmental database and reading coding that no one his age should ever be reading. He knew he shouldn’t be looking at the files, but it was almost like an addiction for him. A chance to prove exactly what he could do with his gifts. The deeper he got, the more his abilities were tested and before long, he blacked out. When woke back up, his father was frantically pacing in the other room while two men in suits sat in front of him on the couch. When someone cracks into some of the most highly secured government websites, well, it doesn’t go unnoticed. It was an official cease and desist sent to him by the government with a very harsh and real warning that should Connor ever “dabble” into his hacking like that again, there would be extreme and severe consequences for both him and his father.
Needless to say, Connor was grounded and was forced to spend time away from the technology in the house by helping his father out on the farm. His father reached out to the the Hale Institute, knowing full well that someone needed to help his son get his abilities under wraps and teach him the consequences of dabbling into magics that he shouldn’t be doing. Connor had goals of attending M.I.T., his father made him attend the Hale Institute. He is highly intelligent, ambitious, hard-working, and obviously tech-savvy which leads to a high confidence in his abilities. Sometimes he can be socially awkward and babbling without censoring himself, usually using innuendos with accidental connotations (particularly when he is nervous). His rambling usually happens when he’s embarrassed which causes him to try and backtrack, only further making the situation worse as he tries to explain himself. He means well, of course, but sometimes his best interests don’t come to fruition.

Without a trigger like most abilities, this is something naturally infused and automatically enabled within the body of the witch who has this ability. Lifting and throwing objects incredible distances as well as hitting and kicking with extreme force, this ability can be very volatile or dangerous in the wrong hands. Devon is able to punch with the force to send someone flying back quite a distance, as well as lift up to 2500 pounds (the average size of a small car) with ease. Even though he has super strength, he still feels pain and physical duration and can fall victim to injury just like everyone else.

BACKSTORY:
Devon Caldwell always wanted to be a superhero. Growing up in Los Angeles, his parents never kept their lineage a secret from him. When he was old enough to comprehend the idea of being a witch (as well as be able to keep it a secret), they told him that it ran from his mother’s side of the family and that there was a chance that he could also be a witch. Devon spent his childhood pouring over comic books and superhero stories, waiting for his own superpower to activate in some form and give him the abilities to save innocent bystanders from the denizens of evil. Of course, it didn’t quite turn out that way, but he developed his own supernatural gifts that would allow him to protect and defend people as need be. He first figured out his abilities when he was working in his dad’s garage. As a mechanic’s son, Devon spent more time with oil and grease on him than most children his age did, but he enjoyed working hands on with his dad.
It was a pretty cliche experience; he was working on the car with his dad, and the engine, which wasn’t secure enough in the frame, fell through. He instinctively reached up to shield himself and normally, the 300 pound engine would have crushed the poor boy. However, his abilities had manifested and resulted in the first bout of his super strength. From that moment on, his mother and maternal grandmother worked hard to train him and continue to explore his gifts. They taught him spells, potions, scrying, and let him practice and grow his abilities in a protected area. The hardest part was keeping his powers a secret. During his early teen years, he wanted to don a secret superhero outfit and go out to rescue people who couldn’t help themselves. This was immediately frowned upon and something that his parents forbade due to the risk of exposure and the fact that while he may have super strength, he wasn’t immortal by any means.
By the time he turned eighteen, it was only natural that Devon would attend the Hale Institute. His parents had told him about it when he was sixteen, and ever since then, he was counting down the days. Extremely outgoing and sometimes overtly flirtatious, Devon has made his presence known on campus as one of the louder, more rambunctious students that is no stranger to detentions. Now that he’s finishing up his final year at the Hale Institute, he’s starting to feel a little strange thinking about the fact that he won’t be returning there in the fall. The small Irish town and academy has become his home away from home; how was he going to be able to leave it? Rather than harp on those details, he’s decided that he was going to make his last year extremely memorable. Devon is surely going to go out with a bang, much to the chagrin of some of his peers and the faculty.

The ability to propel oneself into the air and hover or move through the air slightly. It is primarily a defensive power used to avoid attacks. It’s also a weaker form of Flight, a power which this ability can evolve into. This power is initially triggered by the subconscious desire to protect or defend oneself, but when users become more experienced, they become able to activate this power through sheer act of will or by lifting both arms into the air. Users can apply this power in a number of ways, giving themselves greater maneuverability in their environment, however, this is dependent on the strength and skill of the user. The user’s movements will also appear to be fluid. Zander is able to levitate up to ten feet in the air and remain hovering there for up to five minutes at a time. Whilst levitating, maintaining one’s concentration is paramount, because loss of concentration and insufficient reaction time will cause the user to fall to the ground. It is typically a simple up and down to avoid oncoming attacks, but Zander can remain in hover for five minutes for physical combat.

BACKSTORY:
Zander Hughes is the all American golden child. From a totally traditional family with one son and one daughter, a dog, and a white picket fence, the Hughes family was well known throughout Phoenix, Arizona. His mother was the Mayor of the town, and his father a well respected lawyer. They had a large house and the ideal lifestyle that people set on a pedestal of the American Dream. Of course, behind closed doors, the idyllic fantasy of the perfect life was quite different. There wasn’t necessarily anything bad going on, just impossible standards that were set for the Hughes children. Not only were they expected to excel in athletics and academics, they also were expected to maintain the lineage of witchcraft that had made their family a well known force in the magical community. Zander and his older sister were the offspring of a merger between two strong magical families. It was expected that Zander or his sister would lead the coven when they became of age, balancing both a magical and mortal life like their parents.
It was, by no means, an easy upbringing. Zander was involved in football, soccer, swim team, as well as speech and debate, honors society, and multiple advanced placement courses. When he wasn’t involved in a study session or athletic practice, he was at home and pouring over spellbooks, working on potions and trying to control his power. As a teenager, he felt like he had the pressure of the world on his shoulders, not only wanting to keep up the expectations that his family had for him but also to ensure that he was keeping up with the familial obligations that were set for him before he was even born. As would be expected from a situation such as this, Zander slowly began to become riddled with issues of anxiety though he kept them to himself. He became an absolute perfectionist, losing hours of sleep in order to make sure that everything he was involved in was at the top condition that would be possible for him to achieve.
Things became worse when his sister, facing her own slew of expectations and problems, ran off when she was eighteen and graduated high school. Rather than enroll in the Hale Institute like they had envisioned for both of their children, his sister left Phoenix and he hasn’t heard from her since besides the occasional letter or text message. His parents began to fuel their attentions into Zander even more, and when he graduated high school as valedictorian, he was sent off to New England and began as a student at the Hale Institute. At the school and away from his parents, Zander began to flourish and his anxiety began to lessen. He’s still extremely focused on his studies and can be quite the perfectionist when it comes to his studies and assignments, but without his parents harping down his back every hour, Zander is now beginning to see that there can be room in life for both responsibilities and room in life to have fun and relax with friends.

POWER: Atmospheric Manipulation
The ability to manipulate the atmosphere directly. This currently manifests itself through the manipulation and generation of fog. Similar to other elemental abilities, by using the natural environment, the user can create a blinding and debilitating fog for quick escapes or distracting and disorienting enemies. Advanced users can cover an entire city in fog, causing chaos by making car drivers blind and crashing. Sawyer is able to completely fill in an average sized room with fog. While the fog doesn’t have any physical damages to the victims, it causes distortion. It will last for up to fifteen minutes, or until someone opens a door or window to change the environmental status. As a subset to his abilities, Sawyer can see through any fog whether it be natural or created by himself. This special “night vision” of sorts can give the upper hand in combat by causing targets to lose their ability to see and navigating through the thick fog seamlessly. Due to the ability being manifested through the moisture in the air, Sawyer has to remain well hydrated while using the ability. Prolonged usage without breaks will cause the symptoms of dehydration.

BACKSTORY:
Sawyer Bloom had a pretty upsetting childhood, due mainly to his parents divorce which was anything but amicable. When his father told his mother that he was a witch, well, to say that she wasn’t pleased is a bit of an understatement. She all but freaked, panicking that her son would be an abomination too. She left her husband and went back to her home in St. Louis, MO when she was pregnant with Sawyer, and after the young baby was born, there were many, many bitter disputes over who would get custody of Sawyer. Both parties were able parents and could support having a child, but the simple fact of the matter was that they couldn’t be in the same room for longer than ten minutes without bickering. The courts ultimately ruled that there would be a dual custody for Sawyer, going back and forth between his mother’s home in St. Louis during the academic school year and to his father’s home in Michigan over the summer breaks.
As you can imagine, that was anything the ideal situation for Sawyer, but they tried to make it work. Sawyer’s mother forced his father to bind his abilities, but when Sawyer was thirteen and visiting one summer, he unbound his son’s abilities and planned on explaining to him exactly what magic was and his true lineage at the right moment that summer. Sawyer’s father took him out for a hike in the woods, and when he began to tell his son about their shared bloodline, Sawyer didn’t believe him and ran off. A bit panicked, his abilities activated and ended up surrounding the immediate area in fog. Of course, this only continued to make him panicked until he was completely surrounded by the dense fog. His abilities hadn’t quite peaked to the point which allowed him to be able to see through it, and he blindly ran through it, trying to find his way back to his father’s cabin. He literally ran smack into a tree at full speed, causing him to be knocked unconscious.
His father found him as the fog began to dissipate around his unconscious son. When Sawyer woke up, he listened to his father’s story, explaining that they were both witches and it wasn’t something to be afraid of, but it was something that he had to keep hidden from his mom. Sawyer didn’t want to risk not being able to see his father, and so he kept his magic a secret when he was at home until he was eighteen. He had applied to the Hale Institute and wanted to learn more about that side of his life, since his time spent with his father was much smaller in comparison to his time spent in St. Louis. Naturally he was selected to enroll as a student, but the hardest part was telling his mom. Similar to her reaction when his father revealed his own gifts, his mother was furious. She told him that it was good he was going to this school, because he wouldn’t be allowed to set foot in her house again. On summer breaks, Sawyer stays with his father and has been working on trying to reconcile his relationship with his mom. He’s a bit shy and reserved, still trying to figure out magic after his five years spent at school. He doesn’t necessarily enjoy magic, since it’s uprooted so many aspects of his life.

The ability to manipulate plant life. It is primarily used to grow and rejuvenate plants and flowers, though it can be used offensively by manipulating vines and roots. An important aspect of this ability is that it is enhancement and manipulation, not creation; if there is not plant life around, the user is unable to create it. Kiana is able to augment and grow the size of plant life, as well as control it to do her bidding such as encasing or entangling a target. She can also bring plant life back to life as long as the damage occurred within the last three hours. Kiana has an empathic connection to the plant life that she is controlling and manipulating, so any pain or damage done to the plant life she is interacting with will also be felt by her. For example, if someone were to snap vines she was using to encase someone or burn plant life she was actively enhancing, she would feel it and receive similar injuries.

BACKSTORY:
Sometimes there are just good people in the world, and Kiana Davenport is one of those girls. She has always been the kind of person who will go the extra mile to make sure that people feel included and always wants to make sure that the people around her are smiling and in a good place. Ever since she was a small child, growing up in coastal Sarasota, Florida with her younger brother, Kiana was extremely friendly and outgoing. Any time they would spend out on the beach near their oceanfront home, she would never meet a stranger and always introduce herself to the other children and sometimes adults who passed by. Of course, her parents were always weary about the “stranger danger” aspect that their eldest child seemed to be all but neglecting, but with a watchful eye, they allowed Kiana to flourish and become quite sociable from such a young age.
Kiana was introduced to magic at a young age, something that the Davenport family has always known about and never hidden from either child. Both parents were witches themselves and came from esteemed magic families in North America. Kiana discovered her ability one afternoon while she was outside and building sandcastles on the beachfront. She had found some small plant life that had been covered by sand and trampled. She felt a warm glow in her hands, and suddenly, the plant life began to grow again. She immediately ran home to her parents and explained what happened, and from there, they began to experiment with what her powers could do. It was an interesting experimentation, sometimes dangerous as she learned more and more about the empathic connection that she has with the nature life that she enhanced, but with the support of her parents she began to discover what exactly her abilities could do for her.
From there, it was only natural that Kiana would enroll in the Hale Institute when she was of age. She kept counting down the years each birthday, eager to envelop herself in all things magical. While her brother didn’t share the same enthusiasm, she was happy to know that he would be attending shortly after her when his abilities began to develop. Now that she’s in her fourth year, Kiana is a very studious and well behaved member of the student body. She’s commonly found hanging out in the library and working on her assignments when most people are enjoying the weekend. That being said, she isn’t a wallflower or shy by any means; she’s actually quite sociable and many of her peers enjoy having study sessions with her because not only is she extremely intelligent, but she also makes studying fun. One day, she’d eventually like to come back to the Hale Institute and teach, but for now she wants to focus on bettering herself and her magical prowess.

The ability to create and manipulate water. Also sometimes referred to as Aquakinesis, this power can be used to bend water to one’s will. Using the natural water molecules in the air, users can create balls of water from thin air and use them in attacks. In its strongest forms, they can create a column of water to encase someone in and drown them. Greg is able to create small spheres of water, and with the more concentration the larger they can become. He can also manipulate already present bodies of water into waves to attack others. Water manipulation is easier than water creation, as it can cause Greg to easily get dehydrated and can cause the subsequent symptoms if he uses his ability too often without drinking enough water.

BACKSTORY:
Army brat; it’s a moniker that numerous children have growing up, but a difficult one to deal with because of the moving around and the constant state of dread that you feel, worried that one day you will hear a knock at the door and it will be men in uniform telling you the worst news. Greg’s family didn’t have to move as often as most do and managed to live in a small midwestern town in Waverly, Nebraska, but they still had the concern that filled their household anytime that his father was deployed. With his father gone so often, his mother never told him the secret of her lineage and the gifts that she would no doubt pass on to their son, but when Greg started to develop his ability one afternoon while playing in the bathtub, she knew that she had to explain to her son that they weren’t quite like your average family. She had always kept it hidden from her husband, but with him being away so often, it gave Greg the chance to start to harness his abilities and come into his full potential as a witch.
When he was fourteen, the Doherty family finally received the dreaded news that they had never wished to receive; his father had been killed in combat. Obviously grief stricken, his mother began to somewhat shut down emotionally which caused Greg to have to “man up” and take on more responsibilities than most fourteen year olds have to handle. Before the end of his freshman year of high school, his mother told him that they would be moving to the small New England coast with his paternal grandparents, since she couldn’t afford to keep up with their house in Nebraska and her own family had since passed. Moving was a giant change for Greg, especially coming into his own as not only a teenager in high school but also coming into his own as a witch and trying to figure out how to control his abilities as a witch. His mother had all but given up on the craft, which left him to try and figure out how own path.
Luckily enough, the Doherty family lived close to the Hale Institute, and he was actually sought out by the Headmistress there to enroll into the school upon his completion of high school. Even though his mother was in a depressed state ever since they lost his father, Greg knew that he needed to do this for himself; he needed to harness his abilities and he needed to learn more about what it meant to be a witch. Besides, the school was only a mere three hour drive away from where they were staying, which meant that he could visit his family on the weekends if need be. Once he arrived at the Hale Institute, he quickly flourished and started to come into his own. He was surrounded by other peers that were figuring out their own ways of magic, and for once, he was really devoting his time and attention to himself rather than trying to make sure that everything was alright in his family. Extremely selfless and caring, Greg is a great friend to have and someone who passionately cares about those around him to make sure that they are happy, sometimes at the expense of his own happiness.

The ability to put someone in a submissive trance. This ability is often manifested through some physical connection, where it be through touch or eye contact. The hypnotic trance lulls them into a false state of security, leaving them susceptible to manipulation or attacks. Ava is able to manifest her ability through eye contact, and in years of practice she has been able to advance her hypnosis through her voice. As long as concentration and focus is kept and nothing disrupts the target (such as someone hitting or getting between them), the trance will continue to last until it is broken by the caster.

BACKSTORY:
Not everyone necessarily uses their powers for good, and while Ava may have turned over a new leaf in recent years, she was once known for using her abilities for her own personal gain. Growing up in Oslo, Norway, she was surrounded by magic like many other children who are born into witch families. She was an only child and the daughter of a successful painter and his trophy wife. Ava was well off as a child and didn’t want for anything; whatever she needed, her parents had readily available for her. Of course, there was one thing that they couldn’t provide her: adventure. Even as a young girl she had a budding need to go out and see the world rather than sit complacently in her violin lessons that her parents forced her to take. She wanted to do more. She wanted to see more. Hell, she wanted to be more. When she became a teenager, she started to act out a bit more, using her ability of hypnosis on unsuspecting victims to get her way. Little did her parents know that this was the start of a downward spiral for Ava.
When Ava was sixteen, she ran away from home and decided that it was time to see the world. With nothing but a note to her parents, she gathered a few meek belongings and left Oslo. She visited various parts of Europe and Russia, using her gift of hypnosis to get herself into situations that would help her out or get her out of dangerous situations that she found herself in. When she was nineteen, she fell in with a group of traveling Romani gypsies and decided that they would be her new family. She used her powers of hypnosis as part of a street vendor act, claiming to read their fortunes when in actuality she would put them under a trance and pickpocket them. This went on for some time, but any personal gain of magic will eventually come to bite you back times three. After a rather successful endeavor of using her abilities for profit and self promotion, Ava ended up trying to use her ability on a police officer to get out of a simple ticket. It backfired immediately, and before she knew it, she was behind bars with years of fraud on her.
Her parents came to her rescue, not having seen their daughter in eight years. She went back to Oslo for a brief period of time, still wishing for the taste of adventure and wanting nothing more than to be out on the open road once more. After awhile, she fell into a routine in her Norwegian home, avoiding using her abilities and finding her magic weakened after years of abusing them. She turned to more intellectual based craft, turning to the books and tomes that she had gathered from the Romani gypsy clan that she had been a member of. Seven years ago, Ava was approached by a faculty member at the Hale Institute who had heard of her story and knew that she was highly intellectual in the art of Wiccan History. A faculty position was open, and in Ava’s eyes, this was a new adventure for her. She’s been teaching at the Hale Institute ever since, and is still slowly but surely recovering her magics back. She’s turned over a new leaf, but for someone who spent years with a unsuitable thirst for adventure, it’s only a matter of time before she does something bold and unexpected again.
