3 whumpy anime to check out this spring!

Go Go Loser Ranger is a heroes vs. villains anime where the villains are the good guys and the heroes are downright evil. Having wiped out all the powerful monsters more than a decade ago, the heroes keep the weakest monsters captive, to parade around and torment on a weekly basis while the public believes otherwise. Because they're immortal when hit with most weapons, they'll always reform to be hurt over and over again, despite feeling all the pain.

Footsoldier D is one of those weak monsters, an immortal shapeshifter made of dust, called a "duster". After escaping the heroes' arena, he forms a plan to kill the heroes and steal the few weapons they have that can permanently kill dusters, freeing the rest of his kind. Given that he has the constitution of a porcelain doll, he can't use strength to fight: he has to rely on wits, stealth, shapeshifting (despite knowing very little about humans or the outside world), and a shaky alliance with a double-agent ranger who seems to be taking advantage of him for her own gain.

An Archdemon's Dilemma is a romantic comedy stuffed to the brim with popular whump tropes. Zagan is a demonic sorcerer who attends an auction for the possessions of another recently-killed sorcerer, when he sees that one of those "possessions" is an elf slave, Nephelia. Having had a destitute, harsh past himself, he feels a rush of sympathy and buys her way out, vowing to ensure her safety. However, Nephelia is terrified, believing she's about to be used as a sacrifice in a dark magic ritual. And unfortunately for both of them, Zagan is a socially awkward loser who sucks at communicating.

It's surreal seeing something that looks like it could be a caretaker-new-master whump fic as an actual, fully-realized anime. It definitely doesn't take itself too seriously despite the premise, leaning heavily on the "comedy" part of romantic comedy, and is mostly just a silly time with lots of whump-adjacent stuff thrown in. Fanfic-y to the point of "there's only one bed" being an actual line.

The Grimm Variations is an anthology of horror retellings of several Brothers Grimm fairy tales. With each episode being written and directed by different people, it varies wildly in quality, with episodes ranging from laughably bad to incredibly good, but I'm here to talk about episode 2: Little Red Riding Hood.

The Little Red Riding Hood takes place in a dystopian future where the upper and middle class use virtual reality technology to augment their reality. One man, Grey, is tired of this and craves the real: specifically, the feeling of real blood spraying him as he murders countless women, his wealth and connections protecting him from consequences. But when this serial killer makes the mistake of targeting a woman called Scarlet, he finds himself on the other side of the knife. This episode is a complete and utter gorefest with multiple onscreen torture scenes.

This isn't even my favorite episode of the series, it's like my 3rd favorite. But episode 2 is the one with the gruesome torture scene, so it's the one that goes in this post.

What are your favorite whump tropes? Caretaker new whumper! When the whumpee doesn't know/realize they've been rescued and just think they've gone from one whumper to another? That's my JAM. Misunderstandings, trauma, hurt/comfort, you have so many options for where to go with it!

I'm answering these together because they're connected! Most of the "whump" I see in mainstream media just goes from "hero in peril gets rescued in the nick of time" to "hero is now back at work like usual" which skips all the good parts! There's some amazing whump on Ao3, but that's highly fandom dependent, and also easy enough to search for by looking for "(insert blorbo of choice here) whump" in the tags.

The best whump I've seen is really here on tumblr, with some of the amazing writers here! I'm going to list a few of my favorites, but there's just so much good stuff out here.

@ashintheairlikesnow is amazing at BBU/pet whump and has many series that are focused on healing after that trauma. I have a special love for the Vampire Chris AU 🥰

@secretwhumplair has multiple amazing stories. The monster of Lindborough is finished and is some fantastic fantasy whump with a werewolf whumpee and whumper-turned-caretaker. I also really love Royal Arms and No Warrior.

@whump-tr0pes also has multiple amazing stories, but the one I've actually read all the way through (so far, though others are on my reading list!) is Lux in Tenebris. Demon whumpee, angel whumpers, angel and human caretakers. Lots of misunderstandings and religious trama

@whumpwillow has a villain whumpee story called Hazeshift and an urban fantasy whump called Demon's Haven, and I would absolutely recommend both.

There are so many good ones and I'm sure there are some amazing ones I can't think of off the top of my head, but I hope this gives you some ideas!

Whumper had pushed. And pushed. And pushed. They had pushed until Whumpee thought they couldn’t take it anymore, and then they pushed some more, and more, and more.

And Whumpee snapped.

They yelled. Screamed. Threw around the furniture, hit Whumper in the arm with a vase. They punched them, hard, Whumper even thought their cheekbone might be broken.

They grabbed Whumper by the shirt and threw them to the floor, kicking and kicking and kicking them until their breaths came in wheezes and their ribs cracked under the pressure.

It was everything Whumper had imagined and more. It was everything they’d ever wanted.

“Why can’t you just fucking stop?” Whumpee cried, and Whumper curled up into a tiny ball and waited for more of the assault. “I told you to stop! I asked you, I begged you, and you just had to cross every fucking boundary I had! What is wrong with you?”

“I’m sorry,” they whimpered.

“No, you’re not fucking sorry!” Whumpee kicked them again, and Whumper let out a shuddering breath. “You’re not sorry at all! You enjoy pissing me off, don’t you? You just love to see me fucking riled up!”

Whumper froze.

No.

No, no, no, no.

Whumpee wasn’t supposed to know that. No one was supposed to know that.

Whumper looked up at them, bloodshot eyes wide and frantic, trying to piece together when and how Whumpee might’ve figured it out. “You knew?” they asked timidly.

Whumpee stopped in their tracks. “What?”

Then, maybe even more embarrassingly, Whumper realised: Whumpee hadn’t known. They were just hurling insult after insult at them, and ended up accidentally hitting the bullseye. But now, realisation was dawning on their face.

“Holy shit,” Whumpee breathed. “You actually enjoy this.”

can you imagine what itd be like to love someone whos known nothing but pain for their whole life. someone whos only purpose has been to hurt and be hurt? the unfamiliarity with the gentle, the kind, the soft because they've only ever experienced the brutal, the cruel, the rough? the discomfort when it comes to physical contact, because theyve only ever been touched in a fight or as a punishment? how difficult it would be? how they dont communicate because they never were taught to. how they bottle everything up, hiding their mental and emotional anguish behind the stoic shield theyve had up forever. trying to help them, love them? coaxing them out of their shell, healing their crushed, fractured being. teaching them everything theyve never known, what love truly is? can you imagine taking a creature that is more scar than skin and bringing them back from the darkness with nothing but love, care, kindness? staying up with them, comforting them after their nightmares, holding them as they weep for the first time in years? reminding them that their scars, mental or physical, do not define who they are, that they're so much more than what they've been conditioned to believe. they aren't just a living weapon, not anymore. they're someone who deserves love and affection, who deserves so much more than what theyve had for the past several years? can you imagine the sleepless nights, where theyre afraid to sleep because of night terrors that bring them back to their fighting days, their punishment days? trying to convince them that you don't care about their scars, because you don't, their scars dont define who they are. you love them, the creature, the person, for who they are, and nothing could ever change that. the hours you spend together each day, in silence, because they dont know how to communicate their emotions, they never learned? so you just sit there, taking comfort in the safety of each other's presence, knowing that the other is there for you, always?
