I’ve been meaning to do this for awhile since I’ve gotten so many people asking me what I use to make Avialae. I say *toolbox* but really these are just the pens I use to ink this specific comic with…I have…so many pens…
There are captions with the images explaining the tools.
01. Kuretake Disposable Pocket Brush Pen - Extra Fine I use this pen the most. It makes a nice clean line that doesn’t budge with water.
02. Kuretake Disposable Pocket Brush Pen - Medium Same as #01, but a much bigger tip–good for filling in blacks.
03. Uni Pin Pen 02 I use this pen the second most. I like a finer line and more control when inking faces and smaller details, so this does the trick for that.
04. Uni Pin Pen 01 For the tiny tiny details.
05. Kuretake No. 40 Fountain Sable Hair Brush Pen I don’t use this pen much for this comic but it’s my favorite to ink with. I use it more for larger illustrations.
06. Pilot Color Eno .07mm - Soft Blue My dedicated bluelines pencil! I like the Eno lead because it doesn’t break easily when I draw with my meaty claws.
07. Uni-ball Signo White Gel Pen For fuckups and cutting back into lines. (This is not waterproof, so I usually use this last.)
08. Kuretake Fudebiyori Pocket Color Brush Pen - Light Gray I use this for freckles. That’s it. That’s the only purpose.
09. Kuretake Fudejokochi Brush Pen - Gray Ink Darker freckles.
10. Akashiya Sai Watercolor Brush Pen - Mouse Gray This pen is kinda cool b/c you can dip it in water and it acts as a pigmented watercolor pen. Of course I blindly disregard that and use it as a base for darker gray fills.
11. Pentel Brush Pen w/ Gray Ink Cartridge Similar to the Akashiya, but it doesn’t react with water as much.
12. Pentel Aquash Watercolor Brush Pen - Light Black Dark gray fills/darker shadows.
13. Sumo Grip .5mm Mechanical Pencil I don’t use this so much with Avialae, but I do all my sketching with this chunky ass mechanical pencil. It’s easier to hold??? Idk. It’s blue.
14. Uni Boxy Eraser Yooo this eraser is awesome. It erases even my blue lines and it doesn’t leave an obscene amount of eraser shit.
15. J. Herbin Fountain Pen Ink - Gris Nuage Gray ink! I use this in combination with my waterbrush pens to do most of the values in Avialae. It layers nicely and using gray ink helps me from making values too dark.
16. Kuretake Waterbrush - Medium You fill these with water and squeeze them to keep the brush wet. I keep this one clean to do light values.
17. Kuretake Waterbrush - Large I fill this one with diluted gray ink to do darker values.
18. Kuretake Waterbrush - Flat Head Big ‘ol waterbrush to do big washes with.
I also do a lot of editing in Photoshop b/c I do most of Avialae while on a large amount of sleep medication*~*~*~

GOT7: A Memorable Arrival
By: Tessa Frazier
With a group consisting of members from four different countries that speak a multitude of languages, it’s no surprise that Got7 is well known all over the world, with fans, aptly named IGOT7s or Ahgase, located in a bevy of countries all over the world. Got7 has been making a serious name for themselves in the past year with the completion of their Flight Log album series. A seven-piece idol group from South Korea, Got7 debuted In South Korea in January 2014 under JYP Entertainment with their first EP Got It?, which landed at the #1 spot on Billboard’s World Albums chart and #2 on the Gaon Album Chart, and debuted in Japan later that same year with their Japanese single, “Around the World”. They originally gained traction and attention as a group with their stage performances, which included martial arts tricking performed by members Mark and Jackson, and by being a truly international group. Got7 is composed of leader Im “JB” Jaebum, American-born rapper Mark Tuan, Chinese-born rapper Jackson Wang, vocalist and dancer Park Jinyoung, vocalist Choi Youngjae, Thai-born rapper Kunpimook “BamBam” Bhuwakul, and triple threat vocalist, rapper and dancer Kim Yugyeom. To date, Got7 has released five EPs and three full-length albums, and have had two Japanese tours and one world tour. In January 2015, they received the “New Artist Award” at the 29th Golden Disc Awards and the 24th Seoul Music Awards, then became the first Korean act since PSY to chart on Billboard’s Artist Hot 100 and the second Korean act to enter the Billboard Artist 100 chart in 2016.
Tumblr media
In March of 2016, Got7 released their 5th EP, Flight Log: Departure, which was the first installment of their Flight Log series and debuted at #2 on the Billboard Heatseekers Album Chart and the Billboard World Albums Chart. Later that year, in September, they released their second studio album, and second installment of their series, Flight Log: Turbulence, which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s World Albums Chart. Of the thirteen songs on Flight Log: Turbulence, Got7 members contributed to the composition and lyrics of 11 of them. When you listen to Got7’s music from debut to the second installment of their Flight Log series, you can see what a difference and growth in style appears once they started helping in the composition of their songs. In March of 2017, the third and final installment of the Flight Log series was released: Flight Log: Arrival. This album sold over 200,000 copies in preorders alone and of the eight songs, seven of them were written or composed by a member of Got7. After so many EPs and albums, Arrival shows that Got7 are starting to find their style and mature as artists. The first entry in their Flight Log series, Departure, kept a similar sound and style to their 4th EP, MAD. Their songs were easily comparable to the style of songs like “If You Do,” “TIC TIC TOK,” and even their single from 3rd EP, Just Right, owning the R&B and pop sound mix, with doses of synthesizers and hip-hop beats.
Tumblr media
When they dropped Flight Log: Turbulence, it was the turnaround of their sound and style, and a step forward as musicians since they had a hand in creating 11 of the 13 songs on the album. The album’s sound was heavily EDM influenced, laced with vocals that almost seemed out of place in mix of autotune and beat drops. Within the hard-hitting EDM that they heavily experimented with, there was a distinct show of each member’s maturing style in the songs that they each helped write or compose, such as the sensual, more R&B influenced “Prove It,” written by vocalist Im Jaebum, the hip-hop styled “Boom X3,” co-written by rapper Jackson, or the more pop-oriented sound of “HEY,” co-written and composed by vocalist, Choi Youngjae. They remained consistent, if not a bit excessive, of the EDM style they experimented with in this album, and gave you a song list you could dance to. Got7 changed their game completely when they released the final installment of their series, Flight Log: Arrival. With 7 of 8 songs written and/or composed by members of the group, aside from the first song on their album and single, “Never Ever” which was written and composed by JYP Entertainment owner, JYP, Got7 outdid themselves with this album and sound like they are finally finding their niche as vocalists and rappers. “Never Ever” opens the album with a more electronic-house feel and stronger sounding vocals. One thing that is prominent in this song, and remains prominent throughout the album, is the spotlight given to each member. Each member has a distinct voice that lends to their sound, and they really let each member’s voice shine. As you listen to the album and as each song passes, you are given the chance to notice how each member has noticeably improved at their craft since the first installment of Flight Log. The second song, “Shopping Mall,” was written by members Im Jaebum, Jackson Wang, Mark Tuan and BamBam, with Jackson helping with the composition. With a R&B and pop mix with a catchy chorus, it’s likely that this is the song that will quickly get stuck in your head. This album gives fair line distribution and lets each member shine, but this song favors the rappers. The third song, “Paradise,” written by Park Jinyoung and BamBam, could have easily been the second choice for the album single with the mix of house beats and sultry vocals. It’s halfway through the album that you can hear how both the vocalists and rappers’ sound have matured; this is also the album that showcases the better blending of rap and vocal in each song. Since debut, and throughout their career this far, the rappers have experimented with style and how they fit into each song, but it’s in this album that the rap parts seem to fit into the songs more naturally. It slows down with “Sign,” the fourth song on the album, written by Choi Youngjae. It’s a blend of house and sensual R&B that is a staple in the songs composed by Youngjae, evident on his SoundCloud playlist. His vocals are very strong and prominent in this song, almost as if he was meant to sing to a more sensuous sound, with the rappers keeping a slow, deep tempo with the song. The direction completely changes in the album as the fifth song, “Higher” begins, building speed as soon as the song starts. It has an exciting house beat with each rapper bringing a hip-hop feel to the song during their rap part and a repetitive chorus of “Go higher, go higher” that makes you want to jump around at a party. Then Im Jaebum’s song, “Q,” the sixth on the album, shows you the versatility that Got7 has excelled at since debut. It’s a funky, jazz-inspired song that shines on Jaebum’s vocals. This song showcases again the more natural flow the rappers have found in this album more than their previous albums and EPs. If you’ve listened to the SoundCloud accounts of Jaebum, Youngjae, or Yugyeom, you can easily spot their style on the songs in this album, and can catch on to which song each member had a hand in writing or composing. It’s very evident in the seventh song of the album, "양심없이" (Don't Care), which was written and composed by Kim Yugyeom. Yugyeom is the main dancer of the group, and has posted many clips of himself on Instagram dancing to R&B, so it’s no surprise that his song on the album has the same feel. The song has the perfect mix of slow, sexy and synth-y, and yet again proves that Got7 can excel at any genre of music that they perform. The album ends with the powerful eighth song, “Out,” written and composed by Jackson Wang. It has the EDM sound that was very popular on their last album; it pairs the rappers going hard and fast, Jackson’s deep, gravelly voice singing the chorus, “Wait a minute, I’m out!” and the vocalists being almost like a drink of cool water within the song. It’s a good ending song of an album that was a smooth roller coaster portraying how versatile they can be in style.
Tumblr media
Each member of the group has had such an influence on this album, and it really showed their tremendous ability as artists that can write and compose their own music. If this album is any indication to what they’ll be doing in the future, then Got7 may be a music monster heading for the top. There are many idol groups popping up, but Got7 has made sure to make a mark in the music scene with this last album in their Flight Log series.

NCT: Never-Ending Opportunities
By: Tessa Frazier
With a group currently consisting of fourteen members and three sub-units, NCT has kept every sound and every move fresh and exciting. Eight months after S.M. Entertainment held a presentation in January 2016, explaining the details of an edgy, ever-expanding and changing group, called NCT (Neo Culture Technology), they have released a digital singles album, a mini album, numerous singles, and are truly only getting started. S.M. Entertainment’s plan was to debut a group that could be fluid and interchangeable so as to cater to the world as a whole, rather than focusing solely on South Korea. Despite the mystery around exactly how many members there will be in the NCT brand and how many sub-units they will be debuting, S.M. Entertainment have plans to release different sub-units based in different countries in the world, literally becoming a world class act. Most of the members that have debuted under NCT are former members of SM Rookies, a pre-debut group made of S.M. Entertainment trainees. NCT are under three S.M. labels, one in South Korea, one in Beijing, China, and the final one in Thailand.
Tumblr media
The first sub-unit of NCT debuted in April 2016 with six members under the name NCT U.  The members consist of South Korean members Taeyong, Taeil, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Canadian Mark, and Thai member, Ten. The members range in age from 17 to 22 years old.  They released two digital singles, “The 7th Sense” and “Without You” in both Korean and Chinese, which featured Chinese member, Kun, which subsequently won them the New Star Award for 2016.  NCT U’s first live performance was held in China at the 16th Music Feng Yun Bang Awards along with two of their Chinese members, Kun and WinWin. “The 7th Sense”, performed by Taeyong, Doyoung, Jaehyun, Mark and Ten, play off of a heavy bass synth and trap beat, with elements of R&B and trap that have grown in popularity in the past few years. The song moves slowly, but powerfully, taking you into the depths of the song in waves as soon as it opens up. The lyrics in the song represent the difficult unknown that they trek through to find the light that is the fulfillment of their dreams. They speak of the pain and uncertainty they all experience, but know that experience connects them to each other. The vocalists and rappers move seamlessly around each other, like a dance, complementing each other while remaining completely set apart, making it easy to pick out what each member brings to the song. The second single NCT U released was “Without You”, performed by Jaehyun, Doyoung and Taeil, which holds a more mainstream pop sound compared to “The 7th Sense”, no doubt showing off NCT U’s ability to successfully channel different sounds and explore different genres of music almost effortlessly. It’s not as interesting as “The 7th Sense”, so releasing that song first was a smart move on their part for getting the attention they were garnering for with as intriguing an idea that the NCT brand is. “Without You” could be compared to the pop rock sound that groups like Day6 or CNBlue have, and does show off the vocal ability of Jaehyun, Doyoung and Taeil, but lacks the building excitement that “The 7th Sense” sparks in you when you listen to it. The lyrics in “Without You” are as equally dark and depressing as “The 7th Sense”, a strange choice in concept for a debuting group. “Without You” speaks of loneliness outside of a love that has left or failed, but a very faint silver lining remains through the song when they speak of still believing it will be okay if the one they loves says it will be. “The 7th Sense” and “Without You” completed NCT U’s promotions, immediately making room for NCT’s next debuting group, NCT 127.
Tumblr media
NCT 127 was the second group to debut under the NCT brand on July 7th, just three months after the debut of NCT U. NCT 127 debuted in Seoul, the number 127 being the longitude coordinates of Seoul, with seven members this time around. The members of NCT 127 consist of South Korean Haechan, Jaehyun, Taeil, Taeyong, Canadian Mark, Chinese WinWin, and Japanese Yuta. The age range stays about the same in this sub-unit, with the ages going between 16 and 22. Three of the members in NCT 127, Taeil, Taeyong and Mark, also debuted with NCT U, making obvious the fluidity available with having so many interchangeable members. Working with so many members and having so many sub-units, even splitting up a single sub-unit into smaller units, like seen in NCT U, give S.M. Entertainment opportunity to have an almost infinite amount of possible sub-units. NCT 127 was the first of the two sub-units to release an album with more than just singles, called NCT #127 (1st Mini Album) which had a more hip hop focus. Of the seven song album, their single was “Fire Truck” and this song actually put the vocalists in rapper positions along with the other rappers. It’s a hip hop-oriented song with a refreshing feel that makes you want to jump around, made perfect for a summer release. It keeps your interest peaked with a slight trap and dubstep-lined chorus  and a bevy of rappers. The second song on the mini album is “Once Again” which has a completely different sound from “Fire Truck”. “Once Again” has a more soulful sound but is distinctly a pop song. It showcases the vocalists in this song instead of the rappers, peppering the song with harmonies. The chorus is catchy and it sure to get stuck in your head all day. The third song, “Wake Up” does exactly what “Once Again” does by blindsiding you with a completely new sound. “Wake Up” could easily be defined as a club song, with a heavy EDM, bass synth, and house music influenced sound. The song is easy to dance around to, which sounds exactly like what they were going for, considering the very few lyrics that are contained in the song, outside of the chorus, “Lets just wake up right now, Lets just wake up this world.” The forth song on the mini album is “Another World”, a song that is more similar to “Wake Up” than any of the previous songs, but, following the pattern of having an album of different sounds, it’s not alike in all aspects. This song could also be considered a club song, with the EDM sounding build up to the chorus, but then it drops into the chorus with a rolling synth and R&B sounds. The vocals and rappers go back and forth in this song and it keeps with the music almost perfectly. “Paradise” is the fifth song in their mini album and could be compared to coming up for air after swimming underwater or dancing in a crowd for too long. It’s a very different direction from the rest of the tracks on this album. It’s a song that puts a skip in your step, with it’s calm synth and pop feeling. There’s no fast paced or intense rapping to offset the original feel they try to convey with the happy harmonies, which is really refreshing. “Mad City” comes in with a growl as the sixth song. This song is strictly rapping and showcases Jaehyun, Mark and Taeyong’s abilities as rappers without overshadowing it with an intense beat or too much loud hype. Each rapper builds you up, then slows it down just a bit with the “You make me so mad, I’m gonna be so mad” chorus before another rapper starts again, keeping you on your toes with an angry buzzing energy but never taking you over the edge, so you can focus on their lyrics and individual style. The last song, “Switch” featuring SR15B ends the album on a positive note with a happy EDM beat and lyrics speaking of looking towards the future and seeing their goals despite any obstacles. The song includes SR15B which is what S.M. Entertainment’s male rookies of 2015 were called before they debuted. They are featured in the chorus which makes you wonder, if you take the lyrics into consideration, if this is a reminder to fans that NCT can and, most likely, will grow.
Tumblr media
The most recently debuted sub-unit of NCT is NCT Dream which consists of South Korean members Jisung, Jaemin, Haechin, Jeno, Canadian member Mark, and Chinese members Chenle and Renjun. Their debut was mentioned on August 18th and their single was released on August 24th. The age range in NCT Dream drops significantly to 14-17 which explains the choice of the only single they currently have out, “Chewing Gum”. “Chewing Gum” is a very pop-oriented song, almost to the point of the bubblegum pop (see what I did there?) you hear in Japanese pop music. It’s got a cutesy feel that is only changed up by Mark’s gruff and almost out of place rapping, and a catchy, if not slightly annoying, chorus. We’re still awaiting another single to be released, or a mention of a possible album.
The NCT brand is so far successful and remains to be quite an interesting topic within the K-pop community. Despite the confusion netizens and fans around the world feel over the idea of having a large group split into numerous sub-units, S.M. Entertainment and NCT have kept our attention on them and continue to keep us waiting for whatever else it is that they have up their sleeves. They’ve already covered so many genres with the three sub-units S.M. Entertainment currently have debuted under NCT, so it will be fun to see everything unfold. I didn’t feel confidence for NCT when the news of S.M. Entertainment’s plan dropped in January of this year, but they’ve repeatedly trumped over any doubt I have so far had. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for this brand, their future is quite the exciting mystery.

The age range in NCT Dream drops significantly to 14-17 which explains the choice of the only single they currently have out, "Chewing Gum". "Chewing Gum" is a very pop-oriented song, almost to the point of the bubblegum pop (see what I did there?) you hear in Japanese pop music. It's got a cutesy feel that is only changed up by Mark's gruff and almost out of place rapping, and a catchy, if not slightly annoying, chorus. We're still awaiting another single to be released, or a mention of a possible album.
They've already covered so many genres with the three sub-units S.M. Entertainment currently have debuted under NCT, so it will be fun to see everything unfold. I didn't feel confidence for NCT when the news of S.M. Entertainment's plan dropped in January of this year, but they've repeatedly trumped over any doubt I have so far had. Make sure to keep your eyes peeled for this brand, their future is quite the exciting mystery.
