The devastation caused by Typhoon Haiyan is unimaginable. Hundreds of thousands in southern parts of the Philippines have been left hungry and homeless. The Philippine Red Cross estimates that about 5 million people have been affected by the storm, with around 600,000 displaced, and around 1,200 found dead, and another 10,000 either dead or missing.
The scene in Tacloban — the city that bore the brunt of it all — is grim. There are accounts of chaos and violence in utter desperation. This is the devastation caused by what many news outlets are reporting as one of the most intense typhoons in recorded history.
For those of you outside of the Philippines looking to help the survivors of Typhoon Haiyan, here are some of the many ways you can help (via CNN). For those of you in the Philippines, here is a list of ways you can help (via Rappler).
If you are looking for missing persons who might have been affected and/or displaced by Haiyan, you can consult Google Person Finder or contact the Philippine Red Cross. An official list of casualties has been compiled here, and a list of survivors can be seen here. Both lists are regularly being updated.
A friendly reminder to those looking to help out: please take the necessary measures to make sure your money goes to reputable organizations. Your help is desperately needed and much appreciated, but will be for naught if it falls into the wrong hands.

HEYYY SOOOOO
PACIFIC RIM, AM I RIGHT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
a post about manila, bc really. manila. MANILA IN FLAAAAMES
ahhhhh godddddddd so, like. obviously it is not very often that i get to see the philippines featured in a movie that i like!!!!!!! (u were hilarious, bourne legacy, thx) and pacific rim was INCREDIBLE HAHAHAHA ok my face was p much just :DDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDDD THE WHOLE TIME, THANK 4 THIS UNIVERSE
and i have very many thoughts abt the film itself and i will get to them in time but i want to talk!!!! about manila!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
i want to talk about ortigas center in ruins, of old manila on fire, of diggers clearing the rubble and trash from the streets. when i saw those coconut trees burning it was kind of!!!! whoah.
i love this universe so much i want to eat it all day forever, but also i wonder about what it was like for us on the day that kaiju came, if the people having lunch along roxas boulevard heard it roaring long before it arrived. i keep thinking about the diners in the aristocrat getting up from their tables and peering out of the windows, trying to see what was going on down the road. the taxi drivers on break looking up, out at the bay. sunday mass (it feels like a sunday idk!!!!) interrupted by monsters.
was it just manila? how far inland did it go? the joggers along the acad oval in up diliman slowing down, the word spreading. something's happened, people on their phones, how fast did the word travel? in this universe, do my friends in their boardinghouse on campus crowd around the housemother's television set, the grainy footage from anc trying to make sense of the panic? do they call home, are the lines jammed, does aliette's mother in south cotabato press the same sequence of numbers over and over, trying to get through?
where did they run? i am so worried about this hahaha!!!! in some parts of manila, the roads are so tight a five-person sedan has a hard time getting through. and we panic!!! i think of star city knocked to the ground, i think of ccp cracked open like an egg. the walls of intramuros in rubble.
the disasters we know are floods and typhoons. we are familiar with what it means to rebuild. but malacanang burning, and the lovely wide streets near the bay-- did they evacuate the president first? did they have time? we don't have the resources to defend against this sort of attack, so that means the u.s. troops on philippine soil would've actually been useful. but how long does it take us (and them) to mobilize? and how many millions of lives lost is that already?
and what happens after? let's say it wasn't just manila, let's say it was most of ncr. quezon city circle, gone. the flat plains of makati, gone. maybe marikina, even, maybe antipolo; we're only an hour and a half from the bay. how far does it go, where does it go? south, to batangas? north, to pampanga, or all the way up to the cordilleras?
AHHHHHH I WANT TO KNOW SO MUCH!!!!!!!! i want to lie in bed just thinking about it. it is kind of depressing. did they even think to give us a jaeger or is it always someone else defending our shores? WHAT WOULD THE JAEGER EVEN BE CALLLLEEEEDDDDD
ALSO WHY MANILA, WHY NOT QUEZON FIRST, OR ACTUALLY IF THE BREACH IS NEAR HONG KONG WHY DIDN'T IT HIT BATANES no wait population centers nvm answered my own question
ok
that's all, just talking 2 myself xo
