Dionae came to the Bar at the End of the Universe for a blind date. Pity for her, the date is both blind and lacking in the olfactory senses. She's got nothing against the visually impaired, no matter that her looks are her best feature. But no nose means there's no way any pheromones will lure in her chosen target.

She's been playing these cons as long as she can remember, back when Berl first taught her the ropes to survive in Lassius City. And she's only 45, too young to hang up her fronds.

But how's she supposed to ensnare her mark now? Her wit? Her voice? Her hands?

The last time she tried that, she was banished from three sectors. And breaking out of prison is only fun once.

PJ is a 31 year old nautical mechanic specializing in welded crafts. His uniquely designed claws make tearing into steel as easy as swimming through butter (the melted kind; though his well developed sense of self preservation will keep him from trying that, tyvm). Coupled with his facial tentacles, there isn't a ship he can't get into and or a problem he can't feel out.

The problem comes when it's time to fix the issues PJ discover. No one wants a mechanic that can only locate the break (& maybe make it worse) but can't fix it, and he's lost his seventh job in a month. 

At least his blind date is going well enough, even if she won't stop blowing smoke in his face. Good thing he doesn't have a nose.

Canda knows if she got caught here, her boss would have her armor. Librarians are sanctioned for guarding the written word, not people watching. 

But at 23 years old, this is Canda's first foray into the wider world outside her own biblioconvent, where librarians are taught to respect the books and punish those who transgress against them. (The penalties vary from light maiming for bending the pages to public shaming for breaking the spine, all the way to execution for writing in them.) But her assigned post, in the outskirts of Lassius City, never gets readers. Not since the Bookmark Debacle of 2X6Y.4. 

Although there's not a book in sight, Canda still recognizes that this is how stories are written, by living their lives. Maybe if she's lucky, Canda will be part of a story someday. One that doesn't begin and end inside the walls of her empty library.

It's #inktober #drawtober #whatevertober time again! I'm trying something different this year, and am teaming up with @kmaladybooks to present "The Bar at the End of the Universe" - a collection of patrons at a watering hole inspired by science fiction and pulp illustrations. Today's the first, with more to come all month! So, here's a writeup on our first patron, General Riba!

General Riba is a 57 year old retired captain from Her Royal Irritant's Air patrol, flying fish division. He joined Her forces because, with a name like General, he didn't think he could end up anywhere else. Too bad there's no cereal in space, he might have had a very different life.

He grew up in Sector 7, a farming colony most known for its export of salt. He is the youngest in his clutch and the only one who left home; his siblings Rancher, Tiller, and Reaper taking over the farm after his parents timely death.
