I'm still figuring out what Daniel's going to end up like. For most of my world sacrifices (the last Pokemon left in the file before you reset the game), they remember dying and then being brought back when you recapture them. On my Soul Silver team, Daniel is still figuring it out. I realized that, because I caught him in the Slowpoke Well, he's been personally victimized by Team Rocket (in both game files), and I think he's more aware of that than he is of the entire world getting reset. We just finished up Team Rocket's siege of Goldenrod City, and that means we had the second battle with Proton, the Rocket Executive who was down there in the well cutting off tails. Daniel recognized him, and that was the most alert I think the kid's ever been. So that's why I decided he has the little growing-back tail nub. He feels pain on a delay but that doesn't mean he doesn't remember it. Some time soon I'll have to talk to him about how he experienced the file reset.
I included a little drawing of Daniel with Danson, a Bayleef, the starter from the original file. Daniel is named after that file's OT, and that file's Pokemon (there are only five of them) think of him as being their responsibility to protect. Those Pokemon are sitting in my Platinum cartridge until we beat the E4, and in the meanwhile, my current Soul Silver team thinks of Daniel as being their kid to raise. He has two families in two worlds who care about him. Maybe I'll transfer them back in so that Daniel can explore postgame Kanto with them?
(Side note, the starter from Edmond's original file is a Swampert named Edson, and the two don't really know how to feel about each other. That Emerald file was complete, as opposed to Daniel's Soul Silver which was abandoned after one badge. Edson's bond with his original trainer would be much stronger than anything he could form with some new legacy character I offer to him. Edmond doesn't like to think about it, and avoids being around Edson.)

I've been trying to reconstruct my Soul Silver team from as many memories as I can and poor Steely here doesn't even have his original name. I've been characterizing him as an amnesiac. The other Pokemon will sometimes remember a specific part of the adventure ("Oh yeah, Whitney threw a fit the first time too") and Steely will be in the background drawing blanks.
He's named because I know he had Steel Wing, hence the grey shirt. But you don't get that TM until halfway through the game! He doesn't even have the one thing he knows about himself. It'd be sad if he were sad about it, but he's not. He might be more bothered if he was alone, but he feels very at home with his group. He doesn't remember what he was like, but he intuitively knows he was part of this team and he cares about them.

Being able to draw, after thinking I wouldn't be able to for a while, made me want to start working on the next Laserwing page. The main reason it's been delayed is because I've been stressing out over other things but I guess it took a big stress to distract me? Well I inked about half the page.

It's only been a few days but I felt comfortable enough to hunch over my desk to do some drawing! I can't properly bend down or lift things but I can draw for a few hours. I honestly thought I'd be bedridden for a while.
Well anyways! This Mweor is named Verity. When I started sketching her out I started getting Lion King vibes from her, I think from the horns, like she's some kind of graceful antelope but no she's a cat. She loses all that grace as a mushroom but that's her fate!!!

Important lil life update
So on Friday morning (like literally an hour after I posted my last post) I started feeling like I had weird indigestion, but that slowly turned into a bunch of pain in my abdominal area. We took me to the emergency room and after a bunch of blood tests and CT scans it turned out to be appendicitis! They got me in and out of surgery and I was home by Saturday morning but now I've got a bunch of healing incisions. I can sit at my desk but maybe not for hours on end, and I don't think I can comfortably hunch over my tablet yet. So I won't be drawing for at least a little while. I dunno, I've never had a non-dental surgery before so I'm not totally sure how long I'm gonna be feeling it. The general recovery time is supposed to be 2-4 weeks but I might feel good enough for drawing before that.
Well anyways that's how I spent my 4/20, I did get to be high for some of it technically. I don't remember that part!

Another Mweor drawn and cursed into my mushroom forest. I did some extra detailing for her. Since I had to name so many Mweors some of them are named for random cities, cheeses, fish, musical instruments, and other nouns. This girl's name is Shamisen, a Japanese musical instrument with three strings, hence the three tummy lines and the three tail stickles.

Y'know what? It's like 4 AM and I don't have to be anywhere so I'm drawlin. Here's another Mweor, I still have like 600 of these but they're named and catalogued and waiting for me to draw them. And then I draw them as mushrooms because that was my chosen gimmick for the set.
Her name is Guppy.

Decided to bring it full circle with Mistral and Mistralina together in a picture. They sure do look like normal creatures. These sure are both dogs.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
So the story goes like this: I was trying to name some of my 400+ yet unnamed Wajas and I wanted to name one 'Mistral.' It's a pretty name, it's a .hack character but also just a good wind name. But I needed to be sure I haven't used the name before, so I searched my folders for the word. Sure enough, a plushie in my Gaia folder is already named Mistral. I wound up naming the Waja Mistralina. I'm simply not going to be able to give unique names to literally every png creature I own, there are thousands of them.
But anyways, I was reminded of Mistral, who wasn't even a character. She was an inanimate object. I bought her from a Gaia shoppe that tied into a breedable/changing pet species called 'Llirins.' I don't own any Llirins. Just some of the plushies! That's a key distinction in the way B/C Pets work versus how Mini Shops work. B/C pets are uniquely colored and get certificates that show their name and owner, generally have multiple growth stages and can breed. Those take a lot more time to create and those kind of shops often take a lot of upkeep to track peoples' RP and breeding lineages and all that other stuff. Mini Shops are basically just sales of graphics. It can still be a pet, or it can be a toy, or a potted plant, or a sword. Anything, you buy the right to use a png and usually there's no further involvement between shop and customer. SOMETIMES there are customization options. Usually not. Multiple buyers can buy the same png, like it's a mass produced product.
But y'know, now that I've been reminded of Mistral's existence, I really like her. That's a cute red dog with wing ears. I decided to revamp her, and now she's a living plush. She doesn't grow or breed, and I think I'm going to just call her species a 'dragon' because it's kind of nondescript beyond being a plushie. I've refurbished her into an OC that can walk and talk and have adventures and isn't tied to a dead Gaia shop thread from 2004.
And then to make sure I can draw the design from multiple angles, I put Mistral (red), Miranda (black), and Mirelle (orange) together in a scene. They are sisters! I have a few other Llirin plush in my Gaia folders, but I don't know if I want to do more in this variety. I'll probably move on to something else. But I'm happy with these three!

From top:
A 4dopt Pixala named Spiritualism
Two Wajas, named Rivulet Scout and Subconscious
A Dappervolk Geodillo named Otra
Two of my Mycena Cave Ineki, Peacha and Bellflower, turned into plants duing the April Fools event
I also did a lot of housecleaning over the last week

Here's the current team! Dillia, BellaBella, and Maria had their designs already but Steely, Hopscotch, and Daniel are new. I did them as lil chibis because it's faster and easier. Every one of them is a remembered, resurrected Pokemon from my old gen 2 game, except for Daniel, who was this cartridge's sacrifice when I reset the original file.
Dillia - Strong and reliable and a little bit edgy. I've always thought of the Totodile line as inherently feminine because mine was a girl, but they're still big crocodile monsters. She's tough and ready to fight, hanging at the back of the party to step in if the others can't win a battle.
BellaBella - The most reliable Vine Whipper in early Johto where everything else just has Tackle. A battle prodigy who walks fearlessly into danger; sometimes her confidence gets her into trouble. She seems pretty and ladylike but has bad table manners. Bella and Dillia are both messy eaters and everyone else thinks it's gross.
Maria - Easygoing and forgiving, waited very patiently to reach the name rater when I accidentally gave her a boy's name at first. Enjoys jogging at night. Thinks she should do something new with her hair but never decides on a style.
Steely - I remembered having a Pidgeot with Steel Wing but couldn't recall a name, so 'Steely' is a half-remembered resurrection. He doesn't remember much of his previous life, but he's pretty sure he always lived a happy, uncomplicated existence. He likes battles and strives to get better at them, but doesn't come off as an aggressive guy.
Hopscotch - I absolutely knew I had a Jumpluff in my champion team but that he was useless. I just needed someone who could use Flash and he was terrible in battle. He also didn't have a nickname...that I can remember. Hopscotch is content with a life on the sidelines but I'm a better trainer now (and moveset options are much better in 4th gen) and I might be able to pick a moveset that brings out his full potential.
Daniel - I got my Soul Silver cartridge used, and its original owner was apparently named Daniel. He last saved his game in the middle of Union cave, with a Bayleef and 4 underleveled catches. I shuffled those Pokemon into my Platinum cart and left Soul Silver with one resident, a Slowpoke named for Daniel. In my new file, I've recaught him.
Edmond's namesake left behind a fully completed game. Edmond grew up in the shadow of someone who knew what he was doing. Daniel...might have been a little kid? Or simply someone who quickly got bored with Pokemon. Additionally, most of my 'world sacrifice' Pokemon have some kind of unhappy memory from being deleted then reformed. But in this Soul Silver run, my entire team is made of resurrected Pokemon from a dead Game Boy cartridge, so that's not special. Plus, this time I picked a Slowpoke, a species well known for experiencing pain on a five second delay.
So I think Daniel might not have noticed I deleted him? I'm dreading the day he figures out what happened but for now he seems to be a happy enough kid. This team of longtime companions have reunited and their task is to carry young Daniel up through to the championships to honor his sacrifice and stabilize the world. I hope they can raise him well.
I gave him a jacket modeled after his namesake's starter Bayleef, as sort of a protective charm to carry him through. Maybe I'll choose to trade that Bayleef back in to keep him company? I don't know, I have options.
And a side note: I don't remember what my original 6th Pokemon was, in the slot Daniel is occupying. I think it MIGHT have been a Magmar, but I'm not sure. I'm just going to play through the game and see if anything jogs my memory.

I recaptured two more of my old Silver team. I remember BellaBella because she was an extremely solid teammate. Like I never paid attention to the Bellsprout line in 1st gen but their availability early on in 2nd meant I ended up giving her a chance and sticking with her. Bellsprout's your best option if you didn't pick Chikorita.
The name theme for most of my female Pokemon in Silver was 'repeating names.' Why? At around that time, Toonami was showing Sailor Moon versus the Amazoness Quartet, and they all have repeating names. I thought they were neat characters. That's it, that's the whole reason. So aside from Dillia, who was named before I decided on that theme, most of the girls are named shit like BellaBella the Bellsprout.
Maria is one of the exceptions! I discovered this neat new Pokemon called a 'Mareep' and caught it, and named it 'Mario' because the letters were the same. It was a little later that I realized I caught a girl, so her name got changed to Maria. Otherwise her name probably would've been MariMari or something like that. I considered when I brought her back that she could be named Marioa or Mari@ but we're getting too high concept there. She's Maria!
For some reason these designs came out fast. The idea was to dress them like 90s girls, but in different fashion genres.

Okay!!! I drew this last night but it was right before bed so I waited to post it so I'd have time to write. This is a tentative design, I'm probably going to restructure that...vest? At least a little bit. Meet Dillia. Technically she's been on the blog once before, when I was working on my Johto trainer outfit...from when I would have been like TWELVE. Today's my birthday by the way, I just turned THIRTY-FIVE.
Dillia was from my original Silver version. I still have the cartridge, but the battery died at some point years ago. When Heart Gold and Soul Silver came out, I was at a point in my life where I couldn't afford to buy new games all the time, so I skipped them. For years after I was buttmad that I have a big gap in my Pokemon experience. From HGSS up until I suppose SwSh, I wasn't buying the new stuff. I'm a lot more financially stable now, but in the meanwhile all the prices on used games had been rocketing up. Well, last year Josh the Boyfriend got me a reasonably-priced legitimate copy of Soul Silver off an ebay listing he had been watching. I had to prep the file with my usual habits (get to the name rater and nickname everything, designate a world sacrifice etc) and wanted to clear out some of my gen 3 backlog (beat leaf green three times, lol, then sapphire, alpha sapphire, and emerald) before starting a new file. I have started a new file!
I had to reset like 14 times for a female Totodile, but it was important to me that I get Dillia back. When I got her the first time, I had no idea that female starters were rare. Totodiles have always simply been female to me. She's almost as beloved as Tortoise, a lifelong companion that has been with me since I was very young. I've waited so long to revive her, it's a shame. I don't have full designs for her gijinka forms yet, but I had done a rough sketch a few years ago.
Using Tortoise's timeline sketch as a guide, Dillia should have Totodile, Croconaw, and Feraligatr forms for her original game, then after death and rebirth in the new game. I think what I want to do is give her very tame clothes in her old life (stuff I would've worn in 2001, 90s thrift store jackets and basic jeans), and punkier stuff for her new life.
I still have a lot of other art to do (champion art for the Alpha Sapphire guys, and the Emerald guys, and...my entire webcomic Laserwing...and other things...) but I wanted to get the basic idea of Dillia out to commemorate her return.
Hopefully she'll help me remember a bunch of other Silver Pokemon that have been lost to the haze of time!

april 1st is the anniversary of my mother's death so I'm usually not in the mood for happy jokey smug goofs I'm in mourning and don't want all my websites to be hard to navigate and full of annoying shit for the day
tumblr april fools is always something genuinely funny or fun and always has real passion and love put into it. I loved Coppy, I loved the lizard election (I voted Mop), and now this year they gave me a cat paw badge. Thanks Tumblr. I accept the boop counter

So I beat Emerald a bit ago, and have been doing postgame stuff. Haven't been doing nearly enough art, but also, the 3ds online service is going down REALLY SOON so art can happen later. They say that Pokemon Bank will be available for 'the forseeable future' but I don't want to take that for granted. I want all my goals worked out in as many games as possible so I can shove everyone into later generations without cutting myself off from resources (like having good battle tower teams, etc) in the older games. It's making me anxious, and also it's a dumb thing to be anxious about, which makes it worse.
Anyways, the consequence of making so many new gijinka character designs is that many of them don't get drawn more than twice. So here's some more art for Cypress the Gardevoir, Boynton the Shiftry, and Barbados the Cacturne. They're just hanging out.

They're not evolved YET, but I got Boynton and Striga's evolved forms ready to rock. They've been in the back of the party most of the time, neither of them is super good in battle except in very specific situations. But that's because they've been waiting. Josh helped me out with the level grinding for a bit and now Boynton has learned Extrasensory and Striga has learned Spore, so I can evolve them.
Their outfits go from mundane to very anime, as they go from tagalong kids to full fighters on the team. Boynton has always been kind of a sidekick to Cypress, and Striga was just sitting in Exp. Share baby jail for her entire life. But they're finally done training and ready to be cool!
And what's more,
Tumblr media
I realized very early on that most of the team are in the same egg group. Breloom, Ludicolo, Shiftry, and Cacturne are all in the Grass group. And for some reason most of my catches have been male, with Striga being one of only two girls around (the other being Mulberry, who has 'little sister' status with most of the boys). So for a bit I let the idea of a romance subplot hang in the air. Eventually it seemed that Boynton was the one who was interested. (Actually Cypress was kind of interested, but not enough to fight over it.)
So I'm gonna put these two together, I guess. I have no need to breed for Shroomish though, this is purely for story.

Did a face/personality study for Blackjack. It feels like he's been a bit ignored for character development. I designated him early on as 'easygoing' so he doesn't run into interesting conflict. But he's become a little insecure because he doesn't get a lot of attention.
I'm trying to come up with a good and compelling way to tell him he's not my unfavorite. Like, I just don't really find Sceptiles all that good or interesting, but he's MY Sceptile and I like HIM just as much as any other starter. Honestly I DO play favorites (it's Tortoise) but I wouldn't make a bunch of art for a Pokemon I actually disliked.
I think this is part of why he sticks so close to Edmond. Since Edmond is sort of the proxy main character for this run, Blackjack gets a second chance to be a good starter to a trainer. Edmond doesn't like being called anyone's trainer, but he also doesn't want Blackjack to feel rejected.
Oh also I don't know what his final moveset is going to be because 3rd gen movepools suuuuuck. He's keeping Leaf Blade and I gave him the TM for Aerial Ace and I might give him Detect (he learns it naturally at some point soon) but I don't know what the fourth move is going to be. Dragon Claw? Brick Break?
