i feel like of all the lyrics to clown on, “i’m so depressed i act like it’s my birthday everyday” doesn’t actually deserve the hate… out of context it’s crazy but with the music being so upbeat it actually works really well to the point that she’s making with that song
i don’t disagree about the length or the same-iness of the rest of the album, though there are def standouts; I just will die on the hill of this line lol
oh i heard the full song i thought it was awful but also it was the first lyric that came to mind lmao there are surely worse examples

i 100% agree w your analysis of the new t swift album, esp the part about looking for the short clips for tiktok. there’s a good number of them that stuck out to me at the first listen - to the point where i could 1. see what the trend probably would be and 2. could see it so clearly that it immediately took me out of the song.
i thought the same with midnights too but i chalked it up to me only really listening to her after folklore and evermore (both of which remain my undisputed favourites so i assumed i wasn’t the biggest fan of her pop). it’s a genius marketing scheme if it wasn’t so detrimental to the art
(also jeez your point about the name and then the lyrics - i didn’t even think of that before but you got it on the head for me there. yeah she has her moments of amazing lyrics & her moments of very not, which is present on all her albums frankly imo, but because of the name she built herself a pedestal she couldn’t get to)
yes!!!! it is detrimental to the art and then it sucks because you can't criticize this without swifties coming after you.
folklore and evermore were at that level of quality because they were created during the pandemic. there was nothing else she could do other than create, she was forced to slow down. and that shows in such a positive way in her songwriting.
i think if she took a few years (the way every artist does! no one is putting out this much back to back because it's not good. not for the art or the artist, this insane pressure she put on herself to be a non stop song writing machine) it would benefit her music so much.

ok yeah I like some songs on ttpd but a lot of the songs sound like someone trying to hit a word count on an essay. I really do feel like a lot of them were unnecessary and don't add anything to whatever storyline she was trying to go for.
yeah it's just disappointing to be honest!!!! she could be so good if she just let her art actually breathe. it feels like she's got no words left at the moment or nothing new to write about. which is...literally fine. take a break!!! just about every single other artist does it lmao

okay yes exactly that. if she’d done maybe 15 tracks total (and not just the ‘original’ album but out of the full 31) it would’ve been a better album. I still think there were some good songs in there but you have to sift through a bunch of songs that sound the same to get to the good ones. and she ended up in the same position as midnights where some of the better tracks weren’t part of the original album. but yeah compare like happiness or tolerate it to anything from ttpd and its like…. why bother with the latter
i agree!!! and that’s what i’m saying, too, it feels so unbelievably capitalistic to do one bonus edition and then another separate bonus edition and then sell those as separate albums because you know your fans will pay. absurd!!!
but yeah it’s insane to me how she went from “your touch brought forth an incandescent glow, tarnished but so grand” and “if i’m dead to you why are you at the wake? cursing my name, wishing i stayed, look at how my tears ricochet” and to “i’m so depressed i act like it’s my birthday everyday” just. how did we get here. taylor wrote exile and illicit affairs and evermore (song AND album) and then somehow also “touch my while your bros play grand theft auto” in an album about tortured poetry???????

honestly as a lifelong fan, I enjoyed the back half more (the bonus tracks). some of the songs were her usual quality and some felt like she was trying too hard to sound poetic idk. will be bopping to at least several of the songs for sure. but idk music sounds really different when you’re entrenched in the artists style vs when you’re not and a lot of lyrics sound dumb out of context for any artist. so short answer yes I liked it as a sad slow music enjoyer but I can understand why others didn’t.
see i am a sad slow music enjoyer and i used to like taylor (folklore and evermore era. i hosted a speak now tv listening party with my cousin. some of the songs on folklore are among my all time favs across artists!) but midnights and now ttpd feel so. cash grabby. she said she felt a need to write this new album but not all art needs to be released. sometimes you can write poetry just for the sake of getting the emotion out, getting the feelings out. it’s too long of an album for all the songs to be genuinely and consistently good especially considering how she’s been favoring quantity over quality recently. more songs = more streams i guess. if she had picked the 12 songs that were genuinely good, that were honest and heart wrenching then maybe every release wouldn’t be so upsetting. i really did like her, i haven’t always been anti taylor but she’s not creating art for the sake of art anymore. she’s creating for the sake of capitalism and you can tell. back to back to back albums all with 20+ mediocre tracks and 1 or 2 that are actually good. taylor swift, who’s been a beloved artist and who’s been known for her writing skills since her debut, is doing to her music what tiktok artists do to theirs, almost. write one good line or chorus or bridge and then that snippet will go viral and people will listen to get to that moment. it’s so cheap i guess. and sad, too. that hitting streaming records and being the biggest artist and collecting those billions became more important than putting out work than means anything.
everyone’s entitled to enjoying whatever they like, but i would be so disappointed as a fan if the quality was consistently dropping the way it is. i mean, i AM disappointed because i WAS a fan. just feels upsetting.
also, i do think she made a major mistake titling the album ‘the tortured poets department’ because that implies hozier level lyricism. ethel cain level lyricism. hell, at the very least evermore level lyricism. but she didn’t deliver, which is why i think people have been side eyeing her lyrics more than normal. big name. tortured poets department is a lot to live up to, and she didn’t. if the album was titled something else maybe i wouldn’t even be so shocked at the writing to be honest because i wouldn’t be actively expecting actually good poetry.

really important question to me personally and probably nobody else but if you're listening to a song and there's a word that would, when spoken, be pronounced with an 'oo' vowel sound (like the word 'you'), do you prefer when it's pronounced 'oo' or 'uh'
example of oo:
this cover of jolene by miley cyrus at :47 when she says 'just because you can'
example of uh:
american teenager by ethel cain at 2:53 when she says 'room' and 'you' in 'jesus if you're there why do i feel alone in room with you'
obviously these choices are intentional and you can't always swap one out for the other, but just in terms of sound i'm curious!!!!
reblog with your favorite examples of either one if you have any!!!!! i would love that!!!!!
