Maryland Defeats Emerson
By Griffin Conlogue
In a matchup lasting nearly 30 minutes, the University of Maryland Terrapins pulled out a victory over Emerson College Quidditch with a final score of 160*-90 with a Harry Greenhouse snitch catch securing the victory.
The game started with a pair of early minor injuries to Emerson chasers Tyler Trudeau and Jake Hines, which led to Emerson’s offense struggling with its passing game and forced longshots. After a pair of Matt Angelico shots and an Erin Mallory dunk, the Mid-Atlantic champions were off to a quick lead.
The Emerson chasers struggled to get the ball anywhere close to the hoops, but were eventually successful at converting a couple of goals, proving they could play with the undefeated Terrapins. Hines’ ejection after his second yellow card gave Maryland more of a window to score, but the team’s offense failed at converting on many trips up the field.
The Emerson defense played the best it has all tournament, but still struggled to keep the Bryan Barrows-led attack from converting late in the game. Emerson seeker Lorenzo Rossi got a few good looks, but Maryland ultimately pulled it out of range. Emerson beaters John General and Leeanne Dillman outplayed Ricky Nelson and the Maryland beaters for a while, but Greenhouse found himself on the end of yet another successful snitch grab.
Maryland enters bracket play 5-0, with a bye in the first round. Emerson College falls to 3-2 and faces Michigan State University in the Round of 24.

September 10th, I just heard Quidditch was a thing, I want to get involved, but i don't know how/ the rules of Quidditch, but its sounds kinda fucking awesome
Sorry for not answering this ages ago, I've graduated and I'm not sure the others are checking this much. The rulebook can be downloaded here.
Find teams here.
I would definitely suggest contacting teams on Facebook and joining groups as you'll get tons of information about the sport and events.

Hi!! I'm planning on coming to UMD and I definitely want to play quidditch so I was wondering how to make your travel team?
Yay that's awesome to hear!!We actually start practices tomorrow, September 1 at 1:00 on McKeldin Mall. Our usual practice times are Sundays 11:00-1:00, Mondays 5:45-8:00, and Wednesdays 4:45-7:00.The way we do our travel roster is this: we have what we call a rotating roster. There are no beginning of the year tryouts. Instead, about a week before every tournament the roster for that tournament will be announced. That way if you can't make one you can still try and go to the next one. Also it promotes people attempting to improve because if you improve you increase your odds of making the team! Best way to make the team is to show up to as many practices as possible and work hard! Can't wait to meet you!!--Erin M, President

Ugh…. I made that post with all the due dates and everything (just as much for myself as for you guys), and I still totally missed the deadline to donate to  Maryland Quidditch on Indiegogo….
Damn. :(
Well if you guys start up another one let me know cause I totally want a team photo. But of course, in the meantime at least I have that teespring Turtle Cup shirt to wear at World Cup to cheer you all on.

I was wondering if you might be able to share some advice. My team began the semester at 20 strong and now were lucky to get 7 to practice. How would you go about to rebuilding/ building a team?
Sorry this took so long to answer, I wanted to get some input from the team.
This is a problem that affects a lot of teams to varying degrees and can have several causes. I would start by finding the root of the problem, contacting people individually and asking them (in a non-judgmental way, work together to find a solution) about why they aren’t coming to practice or why others are not attending. It may be something as simple as schedule changes or being too busy. You may be able to adjust practice schedules and get more people.
The problem can also be more complex, involving the personalities of people involved. If a certain group of players is kind of clique-y and makes others feel excluded, that’s a major issue. Every team will have minor drama but huge divides within a team cause instability, especially if they involve team leadership. If necessary, have a meeting to discuss the issue (this can be hard, emotional, and draining but sometimes necessary just to get everything out in the open and stop having it drag the team down).
Also if people feel like practices are too relaxed/too competitive/not what they are looking for, they may stop attending. I’ve noticed a lot of people will start a semester regularly attending and then stop as the school workload increases and practices get more intense. It may take some adjusting to find the right balance for your team. We had a bit of a rough patch when we switched our intensity, but we got through it.After you figure out the root of the problem, take various steps to solve it. Adjust the practice times/intensities if necessary, keep communication channels open, set up various reminder systems (sometimes people just forget, seriously), recruit more, and find bonding activities that work for your team. Figure out what types of personalities and people you have and make them feel included: give them responsibilities, invite them to social events, attend events for their other clubs and activities, and generally make them feel like part of the “family.”
Maryland Quidditch spends nearly excessive amounts of time together. We go to concerts and games together, support each other’s other clubs/activities, eat together, study together, and celebrate together. We also try to recruit fairly aggressively (though always be nice and stay positive!) and constantly remind everyone where/when practices are.
Hope this helps!
