Clark Kent, new to Metropolis, is settling in and figuring things out.

Then a rip in time and space appears in his living room, and an entity that keeps switching ages comes through holding a baby.

"You are least likely to die as he comes into his powers, and it is too dangerous to stay where he was. This is the Ghost King, and you have been appointed his guardian by the Infinite Realms." The entity says, shoves the baby into Clark's arms, and then disappears.

Now Clark has a tiny baby Ghost King to raise, and he's very Stressed.

So Rock uses his lie to bust out of his restraints and trap his captors. And for a solid thirty seconds or so, while Rock and Roll are getting away, Protoman just SITS THERE DOING NOTHING.

Right up until Dr. Wily yells at him to get them out of this. Then protoman EFFORTLESLY removes his arm from the bindings and starts blasting them apart.

He could have done that the whole time! But he didn’t.

I’m telling you, Rock’s rejection hit him hard. He’s still shut down trying to process this new sensation of hurt and rejection.

WILY: “Robot’s can’t lie... he must be telling the truth!”

Obviously Wily is wrong, as Mega Man does tell a lie to try and get out of this mess. But more that, robots lie in this show all the time. Heck, the very next episode hinges on robots being able to tell lies.

But I actually think Wily actually means “Robots can’t create lies.” The robot will obviously tell a lie if its programmer tells it to. But to actually analyze a situation and be able to craft a plausible lie? That’s WAY too advanced for any existing AIs... as far as he knows.

BUT ROCK DOES IT. He lies! On his own accord, he opens his mouth and says things that aren’t just untrue, but have NO basis in reality. He thought of that himself!

And now that he’s seen Rock do it, I imagine Protoman will look back on this like “Wait, he can just... say things that aren’t true? That’s a thing I can do?? Holy shit how far can I take this??”

So Mega Man is lying out his exhaust vent right now! Wily didn’t think he was capable of it, and absolutely believes him -- he’s just furious that Dr. Light was somehow able to hide his own robot army from him.

But one thing I never noticed before: After Mega Man’s firm “no” to Protoman’s offer, he’s completely stoic for the rest of the flashback.

We’ve all been rejected before, right? That shit hurts, especially when it catches you by surprise. It feels awful, almost like a physical pain. And at the ripe old age of however many weeks old, Protoman probably doesn’t have the emotional maturity to know how to deal with it.

He was genuinely excited to extend his offer to Rock! “Let Dr. Wily reprogram you to my way of thinking” sounded like a genuinely good deal to him. I think he was really expecting Rock to be like “sounds great, I’m in!”

But Rock doesn’t even hesitate to say no.

Protoman is feeling something. And he has no idea how to put words to it, because who’s gonna teach him how? Dr. Wily? Absolutely not. 

With Rock’s rejection of being part of his family, Protoman’s now stuck with this horrible sensation in the core of his chassis and he’s emotionally and mentally incapable of dealing with it.

So he just... shuts down, and barely reacts to anything for the rest of the flashback.

WILY: That’s Dr. Wily!

ROLL: Not in my universe, buster!

SO ROLL IS THE WHOLE REASON WE HAVE A SHOW AT ALL, HUH? She stops Dr. Wily’s work and distracts him before he can start cutting into Rock.

Wily: A little tuck here, a little slice there...and you’ll feel differently about this.

Protoman: "You should be happy, Rock! We're brothers. We were built from the same plans."

Protoman is the one who made the "brother" connection, not Rock.

I already knew that, since I remembered it from childhood. But I didn't think too hard about it until now. Protoman and Mega Man's brotherhood is the emotional crux of the series, and the villain is the one who established it.

Scott McNeil is a good actor with a lot of range. As he says this, he maintains Protoman's sneer, but there's a... softness to it, almost. It's up for interpretation, but to me, it really sounds like he's being sincere.

"You should be happy."

In just a little bit, we're going to learn that robots aren't able to lie. Well, they shouldn't be able to -- More on that later. Right now, for all intents and purposes, Protoman has no reason to believe he's capable of lying. It stands to reason that right now, he's 100% telling the truth.

"We're brothers."

That doesn't sound like a connection Dr. Wily would make! And even if he did, it's definitely not an idea he'd want to put in Protoman's head. Why would he want to waste time establishing emotional connections to Tom's servant bots? No, I think Protoman himself heard that he and Rock were built from the same plans, and he was the one who put that together and thought, "That makes him my brother."

Especially because the show's already set a precedent for it -- Rock did the same thing with Dr. Light.

While the two of them have similar bodies, it’s unclear just how much of their programming is the same. But based on this, it’s likely more than either Protoman or Wily wants to admit.

Where is this, I wonder? Dr. Light lives somewhere in New York, but the land formations in the background here suggest that Dr. Wily is in the American Southwest somewhere. Death Valley, maybe? I guess that’s not unreasonable. No way he could build a fortress like this close to where Light lives without attracting a lot of unwanted attention.

Still, he’s gotta pay out the ass for fuel to go harass his ex across the country every week.
