Tiana returned to her paperwork, and she actually got through a good chunk of it before Kronk returned with the waffles.
"Hold on," Tiana said, putting one finger up in the "wait" sign as she scribbled a few more notes. Then she pushed the papers aside. "There! Now I can have my reward. You know, waffles are a powerful motivator. I think you're onto something."
This wasn't news, of course, but it was easy sometimes to forget. Anyway, it wasn't really the waffles that Tiana had been looking forward to, it was talking shop with Kronk.
"So pumpkin spice in April. I think you're six months ahead of the game."

"Uh, yeah, sounds like it," Tiana said, chuckling. She didn't know how to assess what Aurora was saying— on one hand, it sounded like she was having a lot of fun, trying to do all of the things she hadn't been able to do before.
But on the other hand, she knew what it was like to feel pressured to have fun. To feel like everything should be perfect, even when it wasn't. So it was hard to get a sense of where Aurora fell within that.
"But you are, uh, having fun? I mean, that makes it worth it," Tiana pointed out, pouring the boiling water into the mugs.

A countess? Shoot, Tiana hadn't realized that at all. There was probably protocol for talking to a countess, right? How was she supposed to know Moon was a Countess?!
Should she call her by her title? Or- no, she'd introduced herself as Moon, and the fact that she'd left off the countess thing until now (and honestly had been a bit vague about her job until Tiana had asked directly) gave Tiana the sense that maybe she didn't really like to talk about it. So maybe she just wanted to be treated like a regular person.
"Oh! Uh, I see," Tiana said, even though in reality she didn't know anything about how these things worked. "So you're kind of feeling out Swynlake's vibe as, uh, a magic-friendly town?"

The next step?
What next step? Like, moving in together, or... no, surely Al didn't mean they were getting engaged... But he did seem to have been dropping hints lately, and he and Nora did seem really serious...
No, Tiana was going to err on the side of less serious. "Oh! Uh, you mean, like, she's moving in?" Even that seemed a little fast, but Al seemed really excited about it. And maybe Tiana was biased— she liked her home the way it was, and felt wary of bringing anyone else into it. "That's great, Al."

Tiana still didn't have a good sense of what that entailed. Her roommate was a sorceress, sure, but Tiana knew that there were many kinds of magic. And this really didn't seem like the kind of thing Aurora did.
"Okay. Uh, go for it, then. Unless there's something you need from me first," Tiana added, gesturing vaguely. "Whatever you need to do."

Tiana did have a good manager— Angie ran the kitchen while Tiana handled the various administrative tasks that demanded her attention, and it was a good system, even if Tiana wished she could spend more time in the kitchen. She understood Kronk's point, anyway— sometimes you did have to take a step back and trust the people you hired.
She sighed as Kronk gave her the puppy dog eyes. "You're killing me, Kronk," she groaned. "Alright, fine, the waffles. Lord knows I'm gonna be here a while longer anyway, with how this is going." Tiana gestured to the paperwork in front of her. To be fair, she'd barely touched it, caught up in conversation with Kronk.

Just because Tiana was a chef did not mean she couldn't appreciate a good pizza and wings feast. In fact, Tiana thought that she appreciated it even more, picking apart the flavors in the barbecue sauce and examining the bounce of the crust.
"They're so cute it's ridiculous," Tiana agreed, tearing off a piece of garlic bread. "Every time they pop up on Twitter with their game nights it makes me believe in love again."
Not that Tiana was particularly despondent about the state of her love life. If she'd learned something from the situation with Cora, it was that being single was a lot better than trying to make something work that just wasn't. The right person would come along when the timing was right, and in the meantime, she had plenty of other things to occupy her attention.
"Uh, speaking of which. How's Nora?" Tiana broached the subject cautiously. She was always afraid of overstepping here, of letting her true feelings come through too clearly.

Tiana had to try very hard to hide the judgment that was already churning in her mind. So this woman wasn't on speaking terms with her daughter, but she'd followed her to Swynlake anyway? Under the pretense of doing some kind of research study? Tiana was immediately suspicious.
"Oh, interesting," Tiana said, which was the most neutral thing she could think to say. At least she had a lot of practice with conversations taking a strange turn, from all the ones she'd gotten into at work.
Of course, she was fascinated now, too. Clearly there was a lot more to the story.
"So you're, uh, an academic?" she prompted, just to keep the woman talking.

Tiana shrugged. She didn't see it as anything particularly special or noteworthy. It was just what family did. She was always going to end up back here eventually, it was just a bit sooner than Tiana had planned. But she wasn't looking for a prize or anything. Knowing Mama was okay was enough for her.
"It is what it is," Tiana replied simply. She didn't want to linger on the topic for too long. "Can I ask what brings you to Swynlake, then? You have family here?"
Maybe it was someone Tiana knew— Tiana liked to think that she was pretty well-connected around town, just by virtue of having worked so long in the restaurant industry.

Huh. Tiana had never thought of that idea before. Letting the line cooks do a special now and then. It was a good idea, an opportunity to liven up the menu a little bit and give the cooks a chance to shine. Especially someone like Su, who had worked so hard for so long.
"Yeah, that makes sense. Sometimes I just wish there could be two of me," Tiana said when Kronk returned, glancing at the table he'd just served.
Tiana didn't understand how Kronk kept this place open twenty-four hours. Even just financially. But they did a good business here, and it was often just Kronk in these early hours of the morning anyway. It was just the kind of place this was.
"I like your suggestion about the cooks. Maybe I'll try that. I've got some really promising talent in my kitchen. Not to brag."

"Yeah, wow. You must be wiped," Tiana said, putting the kettle on and getting out a mug for herself. She knew that pre-cursebreaking Aurora would have been. Even Tiana, who was not cursed, probably would have been.
But things were different now. And they were better, so much better. It was still something to get used to, though.
"Tea?" Tiana offered. Aurora had the chips, but maybe she'd want some tea too, if they were going to stay up chatting.

"Wednesday noon works. I'll meet you there," Tiana said, surprised by how easy that actually was. She still felt a bit like Trixie was judging her, but that just gave her more reason to prove herself. "Anyway, should we get this mille-feuille out? Can't let all that careful piping go to waste."

"Oh, I don't know. There's so many," Tiana admitted. Of course, she'd been to a good few of those places, but the list of the ones she wanted to try was always growing. "How do you feel about Greek food? I've been meaning to go to that place Sophia's forever."

Tiana got up and went to join Aurora in the kitchen. She didn't need any chips, she'd snacked plenty while closing up the restaurant. But she could go for another cup of tea. So Tiana started filing up the kettle.
"Hey, I'm not judging you. As long as you're having fun. You are having fun?" It sounded like she was, but Tiana just wanted Aurora to be able to talk about it if there was anything else going on here. Not that there necessarily had to be. Aurora had a point, she'd been through so much over the past year that it made sense she wanted to let loose a little bit.
