This is so interesting to me, because I just had this discussion with someone the other day.

I completely disagree.

To me, Tom Riddle's is not comparable in any way to other characters or their upbringing.

He literally, had no one. Harry still had the memory of his parents, he knew little, but he knew they cared for him. He was in the hands of family, they'd not left him on the cold wet slab of an orphanage.

The most Tom ever had was Dumbledore, who even so, only cared for him out of pity and suspicion.

His desire for power, came from clinging to the only thing he had to defend himself, his magic. Something he didn't completely understand, until a powerful wizard came to his room and set a wardrobe on fire.

Any child in his position, finding out they were special in a world of hate and ridicule. ANY child, would have become Voldemort.

Pursuing a greater purpose, and being the best at all you have when no one expects anything of you, does not make you a psycho.

A Psycho is someone who is driven mad and needs attention, who blindly kills out of  depression and a pathological need to be seen.

Voldemort kills people who get in his way, not to be seen, but to ensure that he is not stopped in becoming what in his opinion, is the best.

Tom Riddle is the primal core of all human beings. He is what we are when we are nearly nothing and everything. Even when no one sees us.

Tom Riddle is not a Psycho, he is what happens to life when it is not encouraged to exist.

Hmm… interesting question, though not difficult to answer - at least for me. It really pisses me off when people claim that Voldemort became who he is because no one loved him when he was a child, blah blah blah… That is surely a HUGE factor (even JKR said so), but I don’t think that’s an excuse. We see many people in the story who haven’t had a proper family or lost their family, but you don’t see them turning into a psycho. Maybe Tom Riddle wouldn’t have become “Lord Voldemort” if Merope raised and loved him, but I believe he would still be an unpleasant person and fascinated with the dark arts. When people debate about “nature vs. nurture,” I always say “both.”

What is he trying to achieve? I believe the only thing Voldemort loves (apart from himself) is power. He tries to become the most powerful in the world, simple as that. I also feel like he’s using that pure-blood excuse a bit. I mean, I have no doubt that he sincerely hates muggle-borns and muggles, but I believe that if he somehow saw a potential of a big personal gain in it, he wouldn’t hesitate to change his policies and act “tolerating” towards them.

He’s a power-hungry psycho. Full stop. It’s terrible that his childhood wasn’t a happy one, but neither was Harry’s. So I don’t feel even the slightest sympathy towards him.

PS. I love Ralph Fiennes, though xD
