Strata-East Records in the Neumann Jazz Collection

Strata-East Records, founded in 1971 by Charles Tolliver and Stanley Cowell (OC ‘62), was one of a number of music collectives formed by African Americans beginning in the late 1960s to increase opportunities for the creation and propagation of creative improvised music.  Inspired in part by the Black Power movement, Tolliver and Cowell embraced self-determination by way of entrepreneurship in creating a musician-owned company.

Cowell referred to the label’s unique business model as a “condominium concept” whereby “the artist-producer signed a contract with Strata-East Records, furnished the recorded material and paid for the initial cost of fabrication.  Strata-East Records then sold the LPs via our distributors. The artists/producers received the lion’s share of the profits as Strata-East Records only took a minor percentage after costs.”

The label released over fifty recordings during the 1970s, the majority of which can be found in the James R. and Susan Neumann Jazz Collection in the Conservatory Library’s special collections.
