Fun Fax: OLM Chapter 14

hit a LOT of roadblocks with this chapter for both personal (see last bullet point) and poor planning reasons, like the amount of false starts i had with this chapter was insane hsdjkf. first it was gonna start with a Lee pov, then Jin, then i had to go back to Kaz. i was gonna show the scene with kaz accidentally kicking Jin’s hand, and that snippet is still tucked away in my misc doc. i was gonna have Jin be awake when Kaz came to see him, then sleeping, then no, awake- oh my gosh someone please help me 😭

the thing with animals loving Jin and vice versa was a headcanon i saw floating around somewhere i think, but it makes total sense to me. his mom loved nature so much she could hardly cook from the stress of ecological impact, it makes sense that she would pass that love and adoration down to Jin. trying hard to make Jin a lot more layered and have a lot of softer parts, im having a lot of fun with it!

i was gonna have Jin get sick from being out in the rain at Kazuya’s behest, to follow up with that tiny thread from before, but it felt unneeded and illness from being in the rain is more of a myth anyway, so i changed direction to something a little more up in the air

ngl Kaz wearing his gloves in this scene was purely so i could have him temp check with his cheek, let me live

once i actually got things moving in this chapter, i was grinning like a fool through a lot of it. softening Kazuya with time is an art and while i pray im doing it well enough, it makes my face go red sometimes :'D

the line "... Kazuya just wished that he had something to chuck at the man's head that didn't require ripping a sconce out of the wall," originally went "... that didn't require prying his own shoe off," and its was SO funny to me, but as a japanese man especially, i felt that he would definitely not be wearing shoes indoors shdjffd. tragic, but the image of his ripping a light fixture from the wall to throw at lee is also very funny

most importantly in this round of FF, around the time of writing this chapter, my old karate sensei passed away. he was someone i cared for a lot, and his teachings and the effect he had on me personally are probably something i will never truly quantify. as you know from other fun fax, i draw quite a lot from my own experiences in karate, and how i remember him teaching me and my fellow students. fair to say, his passing has had quite an effect on this project and my writing in general, and i stared at what felt like a blank slate for ages before powering through the mess this chapter felt to be. i will miss him dearly, and half of this fic (and my life) would not be anywhere near as easy without his help - thank you sensei, for far more than i can say 🙏

About the AO3 "No Guest Comments for a while" warning

If you're not following any of AO3's social media accounts you might be in the dark as to what kind of "spam comments" have engendered this banner at the top of the site:

These spam comments have been posted about a great deal on the AO3 subreddit for the past couple of days. Initially they comprised a bunch of guest (logged out users) bot comments that insulted authors by suggesting they were using AI and not writing their own fics. Some examples, from the subreddit:

But it then escalated to outright graphic porn images and gifs being posted in comments, again by logged out 'Guest' accounts. Obviously, I'm not going to give examples of those, but between these two bot infestations, AO3 has clearly decided to act and has temporarily closed the ability to post comments for users who are not logged in with an AO3 account.

Unfortunately, this means that genuine readers who don't have an AO3 account won't be able to leave comments on fics that they enjoy.

If you are a genuine reader who doesn't yet have an AO3 account, I strongly suggest getting yourself on the waiting list for one. More and more AO3 authors are now locking their fics down to registered users only - either due to these bot comments or concerns about AI scraping their work - which means you're probably missing out on a lot of great stuff.

Hopefully guest commenting will be enabled again at some point soon, but I suggest not waiting until then. Get yourself on that list.

Wait times are going to be longer than usual at the moment, due to the current Wattpad purge [info on Fanlore | Wattpad subreddit thread], but if you're in line, then your invite will come through eventually.

AO3 Comments are SO SO SOOOOOOO important because you can only leave Kudos ONCE. You add to the hit count ONCE (every 24 hours).

So whenever someone updates their fic, the ONLY way an author knows who their regular readers are is if they comment on each chapter. And we WANT to know who's still reading.

Believe it or not, some of us think about the name that pops up constantly in the comments and go "omg I can't wait to see what they think of THIS SPECIFIC SCENE cuz I KNOW they'll say something about it!!!"

Is Jin autistic in your work? Because you mentioned it in one of your posts.

The only autistic trait that I noticed was a lack of tact (I'm not saying that all autistic people are rude, it's not, I'm sorry if it offended you in any way), but it's easy to put it down to the fact that he probably didn't communicate with people often in the past.

he’s not EXPLICITLY autistic in the work itself, but as someone who has 2 autistic siblings and could very well be autistic myself, i just notice myself adding on a bunch of little traits to him as i write lol. his tactlessness is definitely one of them, but also his taking things at face value a little too much, and repetitive thought patterns. i write him a little naive, considering that he trusted and liked heihachi of all people in canon (who, like kazuya here, was probably painting the truth a little falsely), but of course that’s not a full blown autistic trait. mostly, i make mention of little things later that could be autistic if you look at them that way.

i’m trying not to blare horns like DING DING DING JIN IS AUTISTIC, but i find myself seeing him that way in this work lol. if you or others dont, that’s perfectly fine! it’s just easy for me to picture and write him that way considering my own experience and personal lens. even if he’s not autistic, he’s definitely socially awkward, which makes it easy for me to lean into it

and thank you thank you! unfortunate that that little doodle didn’t make it into the fic itself, but it was when i was still workshopping lol, back when kaz visited jin and jun through the years instead of just once. looking forward to publishing again soon! especially if you’re looking for something cuter

i watched nearly every tekken cutscene compilation i could find, and scoured wikis for the plot of a game i only remember playing on my cousin's psp and in random arcades, because my friend streamed tekken 8 and i got nostalgic, and after two days with only 30 minutes of sleep i went to ao3 with the Need to Read and then I found your fic and it was the only thing saving my sanity today omg thank you thank you it's so wonderfully written, i can't wait to read more from you! <3

I follow your olm au and I love it, and I'm curious about how some of Kazuya's acquaintances like Anna or Bruce will react to seeing him with Jin (if we get to that in the fic of course)

i have had thoughts on what to do with Bruce and Anna, but i'll say outright that i dont intend to do much more than mention them. ive got 20 other things to juggle and i unfortunately do not have time for everyone on the roster lol. i dont wanna spoil anything, but i should hopefully get to namedrop Bruce by about the same way he returned in canon...

also, cause this made me remember, i originally planned to have Anna mentioned in like chapter 9! something to do with Lee still being interested in her (to follow along with Kaz still being in love with Jun), but i didn't wanna distract at all and i was struggling to keep the convo streamlined as it was lol
