I just laughed my ass off
So I was surfing the web trying to find a song that’s not on YouTube and I accidentally stumbled upon a community called “Visual Kei sucks” or something alike.
Upon the first look, the members were explaining why they hate visual kei as a genre and 99% of the posts sounded EXACTLY like this: “The music is repetitive, no originality in it and the members of each band look like they’re ready to dryhump eachother anytime. Plus, their makeup is slapped on as if a 3 year old was hired to do the job.”
I’m laughing so hard because each one of the posts mentioned how the person USED TO BE a visual kei fan. Listen here fam, I’m not even trying to throw shade when I genuinely ask you if you had the same opinion as now, back in the day. You called yourself an “ex fan” of this genre which implies that at some point, you really enjoyed all the things you look down upon now. How can you offend something that brought you joy once? How can you even slander the work people put in their JOBS just because you want to show everybody how you “got out of the VK box”? Why do you need to be disrespectful towards something that simply does not appeal to your tastes anymore? You think you’re oh-so-mature because “you grew out of it” (it aka VK) but then you whine on some obscure blog about how much it sucks. That, my friend, doesn’t mean you don’t care anymore. It means you care in a negative way.
And then, there’s the hatred towards the fandom. Part of it true, part of it B U L L S H I T . They kept invoking the “visual kei industry is not famous in Japan” reason as of why would they dislike it nowadays. Yes, we know. I knew it ever since I joined this clusterfuck. If you, back in the “being a fan” days, thought of it differently, then maybe you’re the “immature 14 year olds who dream about marrying their favorite member”. We, the rest of the commoners who just enjoy the music, don’t portray ourselves wearing white gowns in the “Marry the bandoman” fairytale. It’s true that the fandom can get hostile ( it kinda depends on the band though ) but from here to label ALL THE VISUAL KEI FANS as obsessed 14 year olds is a long way.
Now the epilogue of my rant is that, one day, we might “grow out of it” as well. We will get jobs, we will hardly have time to take a shower after a long day and maybe only listen to the bands/songs that make us happy now on our way to work. Maybe we will just start liking different genres better, maybe we will end up deaf for all I know. However, this doesn’t mean we should obnoxiously slander the source of our past joy. Please, cherish all the things you’ve ever held dear because at the end of the day, they will make amazing memories. Don’t look back in anger because X person told you a bad thing 5 years ago. Don’t make all the love and effort you’ve put into a band be in vain and don’t put even more effort into hating it. For most of us, visual kei might be the epitome of our youth. The dreams of being there, the dreams of knowing what’s it like to see them live, to shake hands with them, to be part of something you love so much. Don’t be ashamed of something that once made you happy and the most important thing, don’t forget the ways music helped you cope when nothing else could.
I’m sorry for the massive rant. Thank you for reading.
