Monument to Chopin in Praia Vermelha - Rio de Janeiro.
The statue is made in bronze, measuring 2.5 meters in height and was sculpted by Augusto Zamoyski. On 1st September 1939, nazi troops attacked Poland and destroyed a monument in Warsaw dedicated to the composer Frédéric Chopin. When the Polish community in Brazil heard the news, they decided to do something and began to raise funds to build a monument in Rio de Janeiro.
The statue was completed in the same year, 1939, but as at that time the Brazilian government, although neutral, harbored some sympathy for the German government, the inauguration of the monument was adjourned.
Only in 1944, with Brazil’s declaration of war on the Axis countries, the monument was finally inaugurated in the Praça Floriano, in front of the Municipal Theater of Rio de Janeiro.
In 1959, the baritone Paulo Fortes started a campaign to build a monument to the maestro Carlos Gomes in the same local, and with his influence, managed to remove the monument to Chopin in 1960. The statue was stored in a warehouse until 1964, when it was removed to the Praia Vermelha. In the end, this seems the ideal place for the monument because we have the impression that Chopin meditate while looking at the beach, perhaps thinking of his homeland across the sea…
