the juxtaposition of falinās eyes being drawn as āclosedā when she was her own separate individual and her eyes being open when sheās being subsumed by the curse placed on the soul and flesh of the dragon and out of control of her actions
honestly one of the most interesting aspects in lolita was the consistent foreshadowing of violence throughout the novel, so iāll just put some extremely disorganized thoughts hereā
[CW: standard stuff for lolita so discussions of violence and pedophilia/child abuse will follow]
first of all, that itās foreshadowing at allāin contrast, take the presence of quilty and how the the hints of his presence are drawn out intentionally by humbert humbert within the framing of the story (he says āeverything fell into order, into the pattern of branches that I have woven throughout this memoir with the express purpose of having the ripe fruit fall at the right momentā)
but this aspect of violence sneaks in as if without his permission, which is in direct contrast with how he claims āthe majority of sex offenders [attracted to nymphets] are innocuous, inadequate, passive, timid strangersā (yes, i know, his worldview is extremely fucked up but thatās the point of the book)
humbert also deliberated killing his first wifeās lover, and was thwarted only because they were gone by the time he ran out into the street with his weapon, so thereās the first direct counterpoint to his aforementioned claim
the recurring western movies mentioned is also significant, as in the middle-ish of the book thereās a passage where HH describes a fight up close, which is then echoed and deconstructed during his fight with quilty
then thereās the theme of carmen and this one is really interesting: firstly, in the eponymous opera, carmen is famously killed by her lover, so by using the nickname for dolores HH actually casts himself into that role, which fits his role as the symbolic murderer of her life. secondly, early on thereās the song with the lyrics āAnd the gun I killed you with, O my Carmen, The gun I am holding nowā which further solidifies the connotations of death and violence with the name ācarmenā
and finally the stanza of HHās poem thatās at the beginning of the postāthis is before HH finds out quiltyās involvement, but itās still very telling of his mindset, as itās a direct tie to the aforementioned ex-wife and carmen and tellingly does not specify who the gun is for
thesis (?): no, dolores didnāt āmakeā humbert humbert violent, he already had violent inclinations despite his attempts to make himself look charming and educated, and in addition to the sexual and physical abuse he inflicts on dolores, thereās such a steady undercurrent of violence present in his life that itās as good of a confession of violence itself
(if the stuff above doesnāt make sense, i just finished the book today so iām not very coherent. i might go back someday and rewrite this so itās better and also add sources on real world violence and abuse so i can develop the ideas better, but for now itās what it is)
It's baffling that the Isabel J. Kim story that blew up on here is the Omelas one and not her Achilles fic "You Will Not Live to See M/M Horrors Beyond Your Comprehension"
dungeon meshi season 1: whimsical intro plays. ahhh how sweetācooking and family bonding, wholesome moments, the occasional scare with a weird monster, but overall itās sweet and funny, a nice thing to play in the background while you study. whimsical outtro plays.
dungeon meshi season 2: whimsical intro plays. blood and darkness appear on screen. characters are brought to extreme moral dilemmas with no clear ways out. are we those who devour the dungeon or the ones being devoured by the dungeon? friendships are shattered, blows are dealt, allies become enemies. whimsical outtro plays.
not dungeon meshi pulling my favorite trope of all time (the kindest character representing the heart of the story becomes inextricably connected to the most extreme forms of violence with spectacular design and devastating consequences to the entire story)
at a bus stop i once did a double take because i thought i recognized my friend by her beautiful curling hair, and i was bitterly disappointed when it wasn't her even though i know she's on another continent. i walk around a section in a bookstore piled with the copies that solidified a friendship and remember comparing copies across lunch in a crowded cafeteria. i see a shirt with a stupid slogan and wish i could share it. if that's not love, recognizing people even in places they've never visited or seen, what is it?
I think that being alive is being a little bit in love with all your friends. But maybe thatās just me
Welp Senate officially passed the bill to ban TikTok.
I know a lot of people on this app hate TikTok, and believe me I get where that is coming from, but this is a huge violation of the first amendment and has horrifying implications for free speech.
Itās also very telling that theyāre doing this right now. TikTok is one of the biggest ways that people in Palestine have to show the rest of the world what is happening. The government wants to take away this access and information.
Itās also one of the fastest ways people all around the world spread information. This is what a modern day book burning looks like.
The bill is going in front of the president tomorrow. He has the power to veto it, so write and call as soon as your can:
youtube........ where all the amvs live....................... i fear we are losing our way forgetting the noble art form of the amv.. this is so sad.. shall reblog with recommendations to spread the art to the amvless
reminder that while there are only 535 voting members of the u.s. congress, there are (and this is assuming 7.6% lgbtq people in a population of 341 million) 25,916,000 lgbt people in total, so in case of emergency, we outnumber them roughly 48,441 to 1. thatās roughly half of a football stadium versus one person. just sayinā
#367726 of pet peeves i have: those people who will critique adaptations with āthey should have stayed absolutely 100% faithful to the source material!ā and then turn around and gush about the villeneuve dune movies that, yāknow, cut the mentats and CHOAM and Paulās first kid dying and thufir hawat meddling with the arena fight and the two year timeskip and alia killing the baron with a gom jabbar. like buddy, hate to break it to you, but changing the source material isnāt an inherently evil crime that has to be outlawed
(and also most of the time the thing that set you off was the inclusion of poc/queer/female characters that somehow ābreaksā your engagement, but thatās a whole other discussion to be had about that)
