As of today, I'm retiring this blog until further notice. As painful as it is, some problems in my real life have abruptly worsened and I do not have the energy to dedicate to writing while they're still happening.

Someday, if things get better for me, I hope to return. I've loved writing Millie and her story still isn't finished; for now, though, I am.

Messages to this account will still be sent to me, so I'll still be somewhat contactable, and if anyone has personal blog urls they want to give me for when I eventually make a personal blog, feel free to submit them. There are some of you I'd love to write with in the future, and if returning to APV isn't in the cards for me then I'll settle for waiting for another opportunity.

Millicent tensed, then relaxed, then tensed again; it was a fight of body and mind, one wanting to fight and the other insisting that flight was best...if only she could get Bellatrix to allow her to flee. Unfortunately, the other woman's attention seemed to be completely focused on Millie, and there were no ways out that Millie could find. Short of the Auror partners she'd brought--damn them--coming around the corner and rescuing her, she was stuck here until Bella got distracted or bored.

Neither, unfortunately, seemed possible. Her assumption, given Bella's current stance, was that the brunette was hoping that Millicent's inability to see her would result in reckless action or simply aided in handicapping the opponent. Which was why Millicent would not turn around (doing so would likely result in coming face-to-face with a Stunning spell or worse) and why she focused on listening instead of seeing.

In view was nothing special--Knockturn Alley, in all its grubby splendor--but behind her, Bellatrix's voice was smooth and concentration easily indicated how far away the woman was (and how quickly she was approaching). The swish of fabric and light steps on stone were easy to miss if one were not paying attention, but Millie was on alert for anything that might mean Bella was sick of playing and wanted to finish her off quicker.

As much as Millie hated it, she had to play the game, to appease Bella and defuse the situation as best she could. She could charm men easily enough in tense workplace situations, so why not Bellatrix? Millie shifted her weight a bit--not enough to be suspicious, changing her stance to a less duel-ready one and more relaxed--and kept her wand at hip-level, her arm close to her waist so that Bellatrix could not disarm her easily. "How open-minded?" she asked, going for more casual conversation now, as if she were simply curious. "Although, an easier question might be--open-minded about what?"

Bellatrix ceased her circling directly behind Millicent, her heels clacking on the cobblestones as her gaze traveled up the woman’s tense frame. Starting at her feet, spread just the right width to pass as a textbook dueling stance, her eyes wandered along every curve. The lingered where they shouldn’t have, studying what she would have not been able to out of the cover of the dark night. This game was a physical one, and it had been developing between the two of them since they had met as mere girls. 

She started directly toward Millicent, eyes on the back of her head, though her attention was distinctly trained on the stiff movements of her wand arm. Though she knew how risky it was to approach an attentive prey from behind, there would be no excitement in simply looking her in the eye. The idea that Millicent could not see her made Bellatrix feel a sense of undeniable omnipresence. But she could not let her ego get in the way of the game; she had to stoop to this woman’s level to lure her in. 

"What sort of game?" she hummed, now dangerously close to Millicent’s back, "Cat and mouse is much too simple; and highly weighted in my favor. I’m not daft- I know of your ability as surely as you know of mine. This game, pet, is predator versus predator. But why label it? It’s only begun. Perhaps it’ll evolve. But that’s only for the two of us to decide. Good thing I’m open minded."
