Earl Street, Mullingar, Co. Westmeath by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: Another fine Lawrence street shot taken by the inimitable Mr. French to start our week! Here we have not only a goodly, straight and clean street but the denizens thereof watching the artist as he takes their image for posterity. Looking at the lady with the donkey and cart dressed in a shawl and bowler hat it strikes me how closely that dress resembles the dress of the women in Peru, Bolivia and Ecuador in the high Andes. Can anybody see the man with one leg? Thanks to all of today's contributors - including to B-59 and Niall McAuley who draw our attention to the street names. Including that the main street we see ("Earl Street") was renamed (to "Pearse Street") in the decades that followed this image, while one of the side-streets has an Irish language street sign (later standardised to "Boithrín Tobar an Sconna")... Photographer: Robert French Collection: Lawrence Photograph Collection Date: between 1880-1900 NLI Ref: L_ROY_08093 You can also view this image, and many thousands of others, on the NLI’s catalogue at catalogue.nli.ie

What an amazing contraption! by National Library of Ireland on The Commons Via Flickr: At least one member of the Martin family at Ross House, Co. Galway posing in a wonderful motor car, that was housed in the stables when not in use. It has been suggested that the lady may be the novelist Violet Martin (of Somerville & Ross, and The Irish R.M. fame), but Violet was born in 1862 so would have been relatively young when this photo was taken. What do you think? Maybe it's just the veil that seems to be ageing her... Personally, I think the woman in this photo probably taken on the same day is far more likely to be Violet Martin. pamela_weaver suggests below that "...given the clothing and the rather elderly appearance - I'd suggest it's Martin's mother, Anna Selina Fox (1827-1906). Wrote my PhD thesis on them a long time ago, it's nice to see them again." Bob Montgomery 2012 has identified the gentleman for us as Colonel C.P. Dawson. This is an entry from the 1907 Motorist's Year Book: "DAWSON, Colonel C. P., Ross, County Galway. Cars: Leon Bollée, Clément, Panhard, Wolseley. Hobby: Mechanics. Introduced the first car into Connemara in 1897. Clubs: Naval and Military, Automobile Club of Great Britain and Ireland." Received great information about the "contraption" - either a Turrell-Bollée Voiturette or a Coventry Motette! See below for some painstaking and forensic argument! Special thanks to Gerry Ward, els dekempe and Bob Montgomery 2012. Date: Circa 1899 NLI Ref.: ALB186

Unidentified family in a Ford Model T Tourabout, c1910 by William Creswell Via Flickr: This was the first picture in my collection. This is the one that started my interest in antique photos of automobiles. I think I paid 50 cents for it. Car appears to be a 1909 or 1910 Ford Model T Tourabout. A sticker on the back of the photo has a name and address: Mrs. Norman Weiss 205 W. Choctaw Ave. Dumas, Arkansas 71639
